Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., sharply criticized other politicians on Tuesday for making public comments about what the Federal Reserve should do with its interest rate policy. McHenry, the outgoing chair of the House Financial Services Committee, said it was an '"outrage" that some politicians are publicly lobbying the central bank about rate cuts. "Senators that are trying to direct the Fed on rate policy are really demeaning their role. McHenry's comments came one day before the U.S. central bank is widely expected to start cutting interest rates for the first time since 2020. Coming in the middle of a presidential election cycle, the change in Fed policy has stirred speculation as to whether the central bank would be influenced by political considerations.

FanDuel parent Flutter Entertainment will spend $2.6 billion, or 2.3 billion euros, to acquire Italian gambling company Snaitech from Playtech , adding to a string of deals that aim to boost international growth. Italy is a particularly attractive market for Flutter, as it had about 21 billion euros in gross gaming revenue in 2023. It also acquired Italian lottery and gaming operator Sisal in 2022, and just reported record online market share in Italy in the second quarter. Flutter said Snai had almost 10% market share in Italy last year and nearly 300,000 monthly active users. The new business will be renamed Flutter Brazil, and the deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2025.

A person was shot and and suffered a life-threatening injury Thursday after tackling a pro-Israel demonstrator in Newton, Massachusetts, the district attorney said. A member of the demonstrating group, a 47-year-old man from Framingham, then shot that person, she said. Asked at a news conference if the person shot was anti-Israel or pro-Palestinian, Ryan said, "I think it’s too soon to get into that." The person who was shot, who has not been identified by authorities, sustained injuries that are life-threatening and was at a hospital Thursday night, Ryan said. At one point the person who was shot went into the street toward the demonstrators and then returned back to the other side, before crossing the street and tackling the demonstrator, she said.

A federal judge issued an injunction Tuesday partially blocking the enforcement of a New Hampshire law that bars some transgender students from competing on school sports teams that align with their gender identity. Last month, two transgender teenage girls and their families sued New Hampshire education officials, arguing that the measure violates Title IX civil rights rules, which prevent sex discrimination in federally funded education programs and activities. The Biden administration expanded Title IX rules in April to include protections for students on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Moreover, the expansion of the Title IX rules is temporarily blocked in at least 10 states and faces ongoing court challenges in roughly 10 others. CNN —Two telescopes have spotted the closest pair of supermassive black holes to date. Active galactic nuclei are supermassive black holes that release bright jets of material and high winds that can shape the very galaxies where they are found. Astronomers discovered these black holes dancing around one another at the center of a pair of colliding galaxies called MCG-03-34-64, which is 800 million light-years away. Astronomers serendipitously found the black holes when Hubble’s observations revealed three spikes of bright light within the glowing gas of a galaxy. Both supermassive black holes once served as the centers of their respective galaxies, but a galactic merger brought the two objects much closer together.
