Judge Lewis Liman of the federal court in Manhattan said Giuliani must turn over his interest in the property to the women in seven days, to a receivership they will control. The judge’s turnover order of the luxury items is swift and simple, but the penthouse apartment will have its control transferred so Freeman and Moss can sell it, potentially for millions of dollars. The women, who counted Georgia ballots after the 2020 election, will also be entitled to about $2 million in legal fees Giuliani has said the Trump campaign still owes him, the judge ruled. Additionally, the judge ordered that Giuliani turn over his television, items of furniture and jewelry. Neither Giuliani’s spokesman nor lawyers for Freeman and Moss immediately responded to requests for comment.

The 1980 Mercedes was previously owned by famed actress Lauren Bacall, for instance, and one of the watches belonged to Giuliani's grandfather. Another watch was gifted to Giuliani by the president of France after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when Giuliani was mayor of New York City. Giuliani repeatedly targeted the two women with false election fraud claims as part of his efforts to overturn Trump's loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Giuliani filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition to shield himself from sudden financial ruin, but a New York federal bankruptcy judge dismissed his case. Attorneys for Freeman and Moss had noted in a previous court filing that, "Before filing for bankruptcy, Mr. Giuliani had listed the New York Apartment for $5.7 million."

Jury selection begins Monday in the trial of Daniel Penny, a retired Marine charged in the deadly subway chokehold of Jordan Neely. A conviction for criminally negligent homicide would require the jury to find that Penny unjustifiably put Neely at risk of death, but failed to perceive that risk. Prosecutors have said the chokehold, which Penny held for several minutes, killed Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man and former Michael Jackson impersonator. Officers could be seen saying he had a faint pulse, and then shown giving him CPR about four minutes after they arrived. “The polls — public and private — are closer in this election than any I have ever seen,” said Dan Pfeiffer, a former aide to Barack Obama. Republican pollster Frank Luntz summed up the election with a single gif: A coin flip. The Trump era brought a return of uncertainty after most pollsters and prognosticators missed his 2016 victory, and 2024 is the narrowest polling election of all three of his runs. In 2020, the data correctly predicted Joe Biden’s victory, but Trump came much closer than many expected. “This race is remarkable for its closeness but also the insane stability of polls here in the closing weeks,” said Republican pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson.

Howard Schnapp | Newsday | Getty ImagesThe tide could be turning for commercial real estate. That could give interest rate-sensitive sectors such as commercial real estate long-awaited positive momentum. While lower rates are not a "magic bullet," the easing of the Fed's monetary policy "lays the groundwork for a commercial real estate recovery," analysts wrote in a follow-up report in late September. More than $40 billion in transactions occurred during the second quarter, a 13.9% jump quarter over quarter, but still 9.4% lower year over year, according to real estate data intelligence firm Altus Group. While these dynamics could set the stage for a broader recovery, with some major subsectors such as commercial retail real estate picking up in tandem, the path forward will likely be uneven.

Often the candy and fruit vendors are migrant women, sometimes seen with their young children in tow. A city-run program called Promise NYC has tried to ease some of the challenges by partnering with local organizations to provide free child care through subsidy payments to child care centers that enroll migrant children. A survey conducted by Algun Dia, the migrant vendors outreach project, found that the need stretched across many families. “We found that 84% of the individuals that we had surveyed were vending out of necessity, and they were doing so because of their lack of child care.
