The Waupun, Green Bay and Stanley prisons have been under lockdown for months as the state grapples with deteriorating buildings and a worker shortage. And at Green Bay, only rules related to visitation and recreation time remain suspended. There were two suicides at the Green Bay prison between 2019 and 2022, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. A group of Waupun inmates filed a federal lawsuit in Milwaukee in October alleging that the prison's conditions amounted to cruel and unusual punishment. The prisons in Waupun and Green Bay were both built in the 1800s and need significant physical upgrades.

LONDON, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Writer, director and actor Emerald Fennell follows up her Oscar-winning feature debut "Promising Young Woman" with a starry satirical thriller, "Saltburn". Oliver's status and confidence are given a boost when Felix invites him to spend the summer at Saltburn, his family's sprawling countryside estate. "Promising Young Woman", which earned Fennell a best original screenplay Oscar, came out in 2020 and its release during the COVID pandemic helped ease some of the sophomore film pressure, Fennell said. Fennell, whose acting credits include "Barbie" and "The Crown", said she spent years writing the script in her head, revisiting the characters and the locations. The star of her debut film, Carey Mulligan, also makes an appearance in "Saltburn", alongside Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, who play Felix's parents.

Opinion: Marjorie Taylor Greene botches the explanation

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —On the day after Republicans lost pivotal races in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene offered a diagnosis for her party’s ills. On Tuesday, Ohio voters passed an amendment to the state constitution that guarantees abortion rights. The disconnect may or may not cost Trump votes in 2024, but it’s hurting Republicans up and down the ballot. “Democrats will win in 2024 by making the election a choice, not just a referendum on Biden’s performance in office.

Germany approves global minimum corporate tax

REUTERS/Thilo Schmuelgen Acquire Licensing RightsBERLIN, Nov 10 (Reuters) - The German parliament on Friday approved the implementation of a global minimum corporate tax, as part of an international deal to ensure large companies pay a minimum tax rate of 15%. This will apply to all such companies and large-scale domestic groups with turnover above 750 million euros ($800 million) per year. The law was approved in Germany with the support of all the coalition parties and the main opposition party. The Ministry of Finance estimated earlier this year that additional tax revenue of 910 million euros could be expected in Germany from 2026. In 2027 and 2028, the tax is forecast to bring in 535 and 285 million euros, respectively.

On Saturday, the UK will mark Armistice Day – the date commemorating the de-facto end of World War I. Also on Saturday, pro-Palestinian protesters will march through central London demanding a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Every living UK Prime Minister lays a wreath at the monument, along with other senior politicians, visiting dignitaries and members of the royal family. Banning such a protest in the name of those who died for precisely these sorts of freedoms is not the best look on Armistice Day. The Conservative Party’s poll ratings are poor and Sunak is already barely holding together a fragile coalition of parliamentarians.

Law firm Allen & Overy hit by 'data incident'

REUTERS/Kacper Pempel/Files Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Allen & Overy has suffered a "data incident", the London-founded law firm said on Thursday, after social media posts suggested it had been hacked by the Lockbit cybercrime gang. An Allen & Overy spokesperson said the firm had "experienced a data incident impacting a small number of storage servers", but its email and document management system had not been affected. The spokesperson also said Allen & Overy has suffered "some disruption", but that it continued to operate normally. Lockbit took credit for the hack and gave a deadline of Nov. 28 for Allen & Overy to negotiate, according to the criminal group's website on the dark web. The cyber attack on Allen & Overy follows last month's confirmation of its merger with U.S. law firm Shearman & Sterling, to create one of the world's largest legal practices.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Europe has nowhere to hide from U.S. plans to mandate clearing of U.S. Treasuries transactions that will need to be carefully introduced over time, a global derivatives industry body said on Tuesday. A clearing house is backed by a default fund, ensuring that a transaction is completed even if one side of a transaction goes bust. Regulators began mandating the use of clearing more widely in derivatives markets after the global financial crisis in 2008 to improve stability and transparency. "It's something that you need to look at carefully and at this stage I think we still have more questions than answers as to how the actual process of clearing Treasury cash and Treasury repo will play out," Litvack said. The gunman who fled after killing 18 people and injuring 13 others at a bar and a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, last month was most likely alive during much of the sprawling two-day manhunt that had forced thousands of residents throughout the region to remain in their homes. It remains unclear whether the gunman was hiding in the recycling plant trailer the entire time after the shooting, or if he went there later, but the time estimate suggests that the lockdown in and around Lewiston was justified. Law enforcement and other officials have faced scrutiny over the manhunt, in part because they searched the recycling plant, Maine Recycling, twice without finding Mr. Card. It was during a third sweep on Oct. 27 — two days after the shooting — that they also searched for the first time an adjacent dirt parking lot used by the company. That search took place after a supervisor at the company reached out to the police and suggested they look through the trailers, officials have said.

The DVD service was particularly handy when I decided to embark on a career-spanning marathon of all Martin Scorsese’s movies. The most rented movie overall was “The Blind Side” (never saw it) and the most rented TV show “Dexter” (a video store rental for me in 2010). The “Tár” outlier speaks to one of the beautiful aspects of the Netflix DVD. (Don’t sleep on De Niro’s deliciously unhinged performance in “The King of Comedy.”) For all Netflix DVD users, though, De Niro rests at a healthy but comparatively modest fifth place. In this way, the DVD service acted more as an overstuffed old-school video store.

LONDON, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's approach to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic was "mad and dangerous" and his constant indecision made it "impossible" to tackle the virus, the government's top civil servant told officials. In the autumn of 2020 when the government was discussing how to suppress the virus, Case said of Johnson: "He cannot lead and we cannot support him under these circumstances. "This is in danger of becoming Trump/Bolsonaro level mad and dangerous," Case told other colleagues.
