Explainer: What’s behind the scramble for semaglutide?
  + stars: | 2023-11-18 | by ( Maggie Fick | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Semaglutide, developed by Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) over decades, is the active ingredient in type 2 diabetes treatments Ozempic and Rybelsus, as well as Wegovy, which is used for weight loss only. Semaglutide in injected form was first approved for use in the U.S. as a treatment for type 2 diabetes in 2017. Booming demand for both drugs has propelled Novo Nordisk to its highest-ever profits. People taking part in clinical trials for drugs based on semaglutide may also continue to take it. The curbs will be in force until August 2024, but may end sooner if supplies improve, a spokesperson for the health ministry said.

NHS diabetes patients – including Gradwell, who went for weeks without full medication – pay nothing for their medication. The shortage persists even after Ozempic's manufacturer Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) launched Wegovy, a semaglutide drug solely for weight loss, in September. Rightangled told Reuters it is within its rights to continue to prescribe Ozempic for weight loss. Two had stopped offering it for weight loss by October, but Rightangled continued to make it available as of Nov. 17, Reuters found. He said his oncologist said that while he could not prescribe Ozempic, it would be good for his health if he took it for weight loss.

Sean Combs, through a lawyer, denies all of the allegations against him in the lawsuit. Photo: Jordan Strauss/Invision/Associated PressA former romantic partner of producer and entrepreneur Sean Combs has filed a federal lawsuit accusing the music mogul of physical and mental abuse spanning roughly a decade. In a suit filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, R&B singer Cassie, who was once signed to Combs’s Bad Boy Records label, accused him of using drugs and alcohol to control her during their relationship. The pair first met in late 2005, when she was 19 years old and he was 37, the suit said.

US professors suspended, probed over Gaza war comments

Israel has vowed to annihilate the Hamas militant group that controls Gaza since its fighters killed 1,200 people and dragged away 240 hostages on a deadly rampage on Oct. 7. Since then, Israel has bombed much of Gaza to rubble, ordered the depopulation of the entire northern half of the enclave and made around two-thirds of Gazans homeless. The University of Southern California said on Friday economics professor John Strauss was teaching classes remotely until the end of the semester. "We cannot discuss the details of matters that are pending investigation," the university said in a statement on the incident. Boxes of Ozempic, a semaglutide injection drug used for treating type 2 diabetes made by Novo Nordisk, is seen at a Rock Canyon Pharmacy in Provo, Utah, U.S. March 29, 2023. Ozempic is approved to treat Type 2 diabetes but has increasingly been prescribed "off-label" to treat weight loss because it has the same active ingredient as Novo's hugely popular - and scarce - anti-obesity drug Wegovy. In Britain, doctors and prescribers, including private online pharmacies, have been ordered to stop prescribing Ozempic to people who don't have type 2 diabetes as soon as possible. They are also banned from starting new patients with type 2 diabetes on the medicine for as long as the shortage lasts. Last month, Belgium's federal medicine agency recommended doctors and pharmacists only prescribe Ozempic to diabetic patients due to the surge in demand.

Telecom operators, including Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE), have called for what they describe as "fair share funding," which the Big Tech companies have said would amount to an internet tax. While Trump and his team may be looking ahead to a potential general election rematch – and he has maintained a robust lead in GOP primary polling – the former president is still courting voters in the early nominating states. Trump’s campaign believes that winning Iowa and New Hampshire would effectively force his primary opponents to drop out and donors to rally around him, his advisers said. Alternatively, New Hampshire is also a key state for Trump’s rivals looking to make headway in their own races. “In New Hampshire, we have a lot of people that say that, yes, they support President Trump, but that doesn’t mean they’re voting for him,” Haley said last month while filing for the Granite State GOP primary. He also predicted during the Merrimack event that independents would vote in “record numbers” in the New Hampshire primary, arguing that most of them don’t want to see Trump as president again.

Alan van Capelle spends a lot of time trying to foster equality and a sense of belonging as the executive director of Friends of the High Line, the nonprofit that oversees the park’s operations. He grew up on Commack, Long Island, and is now living a life he never thought possible as a Jewish, biracial, gay man. “You either died early of AIDS or were alone, abandoned by family,” he said. “I’m living the dream because I never knew I could have a husband and two kids.”Mr. van Capelle was one of the lead architects of the marriage equality campaign in New York, and is married to Matthew Morningstar, 48, an executive vice president at LPL Financial, a financial services firm in Manhattan. They live in a two-bedroom on the Lower East Side with their sons Patrick, 9, and Ethan, 12, whom they adopted at birth.

CNN —Media personality and sex expert Dr. Ruth Westheimer is now New York state’s honorary ambassador to loneliness, a role that’s the first of its kind in the nation. US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has described the prevalence of loneliness and isolation as a national epidemic among all ages. Dr. Ruth Westheimer arrives at the Governors Awards at the Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles on October 27, 2019. A sense of being alone defines loneliness, while social isolation is an objective lack of social connections. Social isolation has also been linked to cognitive decline, anxiety and weakened immunity.

On Tuesday, the country’s wage board announced an increase of $113 a month for garment workers, set to take effect December 1. Garment workers in Bangladesh currently make $95 a month producing clothes for big brands such as H&M, Zara and Levi’s. The American Apparel and Footwear Association, or AAFP, which represents brands in the US suggests a timelier minimum wage review. CNN reached out to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association which represents factory owners for comment but did not hear back. BRUSSELS, Nov 8 (Reuters) - The European Union's executive recommended on Wednesday that the bloc grants formal candidate status to Georgia, if and when it fulfils remaining conditions. "The Commission recommends that the (European) Council grants Georgia the status of a candidate country on the understanding that certain reforms that steps are taken," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. If accepted, EU officials expect formal accession talks with Kyiv to start next year. A top aide to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Budapest would not support Ukraine's EU integration unless Kyiv changes its laws on minorities, in particular as regards education. "Moldova is firmly on the path for EU membership and we will continue working relentlessly towards this goal," the country's president, Maia Sandu, said in welcoming the move. Abortion (literally) on the ballot in OhioThe 2022 midterm elections showed that when abortion rights are on the ballot, voters overwhelmingly favored protecting or expanding access. This is the only abortion rights ballot initiative before voters this year. The recent missteps have created an unwelcome wrinkle for Trump, his campaign team and the larger Republican political apparatus. Republicans have questioned whether Biden is able to serve as commander-in-chief, pointing to his age and mental fitness. And, during a rally in South Carolina in September, Trump confused former Florida Gov. “President Trump continues to dominate in primary polls and is winning against Crooked Joe Biden in the general election,” Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement. Instead of attacking Biden directly over his age, Trump instead tries to paint Biden as “incompetent,” and “cognitively impaired,” which he argues is not solely about the president’s age.
