REUTERS/Beck Diefenbach/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 19 (Reuters) - Meta (META.O) CEO Mark Zuckerberg's philanthropy venture plans to build a computing system powered by artificial intelligence for life sciences research to study human cells and diseases. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, created by Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, will use the computing system to run openly available AI models, the philanthropy venture said on Tuesday. AI has been used in the life sciences domain for some years. The system will be trained on datasets from software tool CZ Cell x Gene, as well as resources from Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network and Chan Zuckerberg Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging, and publicly available data. The company released its latest Llama 2 model in July, and offered it for free to businesses of a certain size.

Google is preparing to release a massive LLM called Gemini. Get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in business, from Wall Street to Silicon Valley — delivered daily. It's a release that may become an exceedingly rare occurrence since the AI sector is gearing up for a significant downsizing period. To date, the generative AI boom has been driven by algorithms known as large language models (LLMs). GPT-4, the latest AI model from the ChatGPT creator , is thought to be trained on more than a trillion bits of data known as tokens.

Around the same time, Tencent announced it is integrating its AI model into advertising content creation, and its own Zoom-like video conferencing app. It's also not clear how powerful China's AI applications currently are, beyond demos and select business partnerships. "Overall we see generally Chinese language model[s] still lag behind the most advanced ChatGPT version 4," CLSA's Tony Zhang said in a phone interview in the last week. Now with Beijing's green light, public-facing AI applications such as Baidu's Ernie bot can be widely used in China. Generative AI and large language model-related revenue contributed to 20% of SenseTime' s revenue in the first half of 2023, Nomura analysts said, citing company management.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff's message to companies interested in generative AI is clear: the technology can't be trusted yet. Benioff spent much of the conference issuing ominous warnings about the perils of generative AI while simultaneously touting his own company's new technology as ethical and secure. "We're not scraping the Internet with our models, if that's your question," Benioff told me Wednesday afternoon. Salesforce has "an open philosophy" regarding the development of large language models (LLMs), Benioff said, building some on top of pre-existing models and building others from scratch. Baxter said that Salesforce only uses customer data with consent and performs legal reviews before using any open-source data for AI model training.

Venture capital investor Bill Gurley, a partner at Benchmark, said founders he works with believe Meta 's new large language model, Llama 2, has the "most momentum" in the battle of the large artificial intelligence models. Gurley told CNBC's Julia Boorstin Monday that the open-source nature of Meta's product is threatening to other leaders in the AI space. AI researchers typically compare LLMs when the software performs specific tasks. For instance, some AI researchers have found that Llama 2 outperforms other similar open-source AI language models and is on par with proprietary systems like OpenAI's ChatGPT. Google followed suit with its latest large language model called PaLM 2 in May, which powers the Google's generative AI features like its chatbot Bard.

For Appen, that would mean finding specialists in particular types of information that can bolster generative AI systems. Even before the generative AI transition, wages for Appen's data labelers were a sticking point. Kim Stagg, Appen's vice president of product, said the work required for generative AI services was different than what the company has needed in the past. "With generative AI, we see a different demand." The company's plunging stock price suggests that investors don't see the company's business offerings transferring to the generative AI space.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAI is undermining the web's grand bargain, and a decades-old handshake agreement is the only thing standing in the way. Now, though, generative AI and large language models are changing the mission of web crawlers radically and rapidly. Without a supply of potential consumers, there's little incentive for content creators to let web crawlers continue to suck up free data online. It's also open to manipulation, especially given the voracious appetite for quality AI data. Because robots.txt is voluntary, web crawlers can also simply ignore the blocking instructions and siphon the information from a site anyway.

Bank of America expects this software stock to benefit from heightened demand for secure solutions as artificial intelligence disrupts the world. Analyst Mariana Perez Mora reiterated her buy rating on Palantir Technologies and $18 price target, calling the company a "key player" even after its recent pullback. Palantir sits in a "unique position" as an enabler of AI implementation across commercial and government sectors, she said. Based on Bank of America's price target, Perez Mora sees more upside in store, with the $18 objective implying shares could rally another 23% from Monday's close. Key to Palantir's growth story is its recently released AI platform, which fuels the growing need for secure and reliable data infrastructure, Perez Mora said.

The rapidly changing landscape of generative AI makes it tricky for the EU to quickly formulate regulations.

That's all according to a Thursday report from researchers at Arthur AI, a machine learning monitoring platform. AI hallucinations occur when large language models, or LLMs, fabricate information entirely, behaving as if they are spouting facts. Meta's Llama 2, on the other hand, hallucinates more overall than GPT-4 and Anthropic's Claude 2, researchers found. In a second experiment, the researchers tested how much the AI models would hedge their answers with warning phrases to avoid risk (think: "As an AI model, I cannot provide opinions"). "Making sure you really understand the way the LLM performs for the way it's actually getting used is the key."
