Powerful leaders of the Democratic establishment quickly embraced Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday after President Biden’s shocking exit from the race, hoping that a seamless succession could end a month of damaging chaos and transform a contest widely believed to be tipping toward Republicans. With breathtaking speed, she took control of Mr. Biden’s enormous political operation and contacted Democratic leaders in Congress and state houses to ask for their support. The Biden campaign formally renamed itself “Harris for President,” giving her immediate access to an account that had $96 million in cash at the end of June. On an internal call, the Biden campaign’s leaders told staff members that they would now work for Ms. Harris. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” Ms. Harris said in a statement.

CNN —House Speaker Mike Johnson called on President Joe Biden to resign “immediately” in the wake of Biden’s announcement that he will not seek reelection. “If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. As speaker of the House, Johnson is second in the line of presidential succession behind Harris. “President Biden inherited an economy in freefall, a skyrocketing violent crime rate, and alliances in tatters from his predecessor. “If Joe Biden does not have the cognitive ability to seek reelection, he does not have the cognitive ability to serve the remainder of his term,” she said.

In 2022, Lisa Lennox was visiting a friend in Stephenville, Texas, when she stumbled upon the Interstate Inn. The motel, on a highway an hour west of Fort Worth, had seen better days. The property needed new plumbing and wiring, and asbestos had to be removed. But Ms. Lennox immediately felt a connection to the property, with its funky design, including a giant sloped roof that screamed Space Age. But they’re all in disrepair, and a lot of them are being torn down.” Ms. Lennox had no real experience in hospitality, but she’d traveled widely and knew what made a good hotel room.

Donald J. Trump has long been a man undone by himself. He imperiled his presidency and political campaigns with personal grudges, impulsiveness and an appetite for authoritarianism. But on Thursday night, with his right ear still bandaged five days after he was wounded by a would-be assassin’s bullet, Mr. Trump attempted a politically cunning transformation. He opened his address by casting himself as a unifying figure, promising to bridge political divides he had long delighted in deepening. “The discord and division in our society must be healed — we must heal it quickly,” Mr. Trump said on the Republican convention’s final night.

Vice President Kamala Harris tried to buck up the Democratic Party’s biggest donors on Friday, telling about 300 of them that there was little to worry about in President Biden’s campaign. Ms. Harris spoke to the group at a time of extraordinary turmoil among Democrats, with many hoping that she will replace Mr. Biden as the party’s nominee. But several listeners said they found the meeting overall to be of little value and even, at times, condescending, believing that the message ignored donors’ legitimate concerns about the Biden-led ticket. Ms. Harris, of course, is in a delicate position: She must demonstrate loyalty to her boss but also be prepared to jump immediately to the top of the Democratic ticket if Mr. Biden were to withdraw. It is something I feel strongly you should all hear and should take with you when you leave.

Some of the companies reporting quarterly results next week are more likely to see their stocks get a post-earnings bump. Quarterly earnings so far have been positive. FactSet data showed that as of Thursday, 80% of the 61 companies in the S & P 500 that had already reported topped analyst earnings estimates. Analysts have revised their earnings estimates upwards by 25% and 64%, respectively, in the past three and six months. Analyst Jay Sole said he expects the Hoka brand has maintained "robust revenue momentum," which should give Deckers a good chance of beating earnings estimates and raising its forecast.

As the 2024 market rally broadens out, some small-cap stocks are poised to do better than others. But with interest rate cuts on the horizon, the prospects for small-cap stocks have improved in recent weeks. The Russell 2000 small-cap index has already risen more than 6% in July alone. Against that backdrop, CNBC Pro screened for the small-cap stocks that could be poised for a boost. "We believe near-term expectations are reasonable, and given the stock's negative sentiment and recent market volatility, we decided to move to the sidelines," wrote analyst Chris O'Cull.

But she warned that things could get more chaotic for Democrats if Biden were to make the extraordinary move to end his campaign just weeks before the Democratic convention. In a twist for the left-leaning Ocasio-Cortez, her comments make her among the more forceful pro-Biden voices in the party right now. Many progressives, including Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., are primarily driven by policy goals and know they have Biden's ear. The strategist said part of the reason progressives like Ocasio-Cortez are backing Biden is the "bird in hand phenomenon" — there's a "comfort level" with Biden in the White House. Ocasio-Cortez also cautioned followers that Biden has unique electoral strengths that other Democrats cannot expect to replicate.

2024 at a Crossroads
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Shane Goldmacher | Lisa Lerer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The 2024 presidential race hurtled toward a consequential crossroads on Thursday, as top Democrats ratcheted up pressure to deny President Biden his party’s nomination while bullish Republicans prepared for a balloon drop to formally select a bandaged Donald J. Trump as their standard-bearer. An extraordinary three weeks in American politics took another surprise turn, after the White House announced on Wednesday that Mr. Biden had contracted Covid, forcing the president into physical isolation just as his presidential candidacy hung in the balance. A race that not long ago seemed a staid rematch came to a dramatic pivot point after a head-spinning series of events: a disastrous debate late last month that made longstanding questions about Mr. Biden’s age unavoidable, and then a shocking attempted assassination of Mr. Trump less than 48 hours before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. For a fleeting few hours on Wednesday, the two presidents presented starkly dueling images that fed into the very story line Republicans were unspooling at their convention — that Mr. Trump was strong and Mr. Biden was weak. One was flying to his beach house on Air Force One to enter seclusion as his party fractured around him; the other was welcomed as a wounded hero by thousands of cheering supporters, some of whom bandaged their ears in a show of solidarity.

Glover has been open in the past about trying to find his tribe in both comedy and music. Two years later, his song “This Is America” became a protest anthem and won him multiple Grammys, including song and record of the year. Around that same time, Glover both lost his father and welcomed his second child, something that made him more reflective.

Investors could be "significantly" undervaluing CAE stock, a Canadian aerospace training and simulation company, according to Goldman Sachs. In a recent report, the Wall Street investment bank reiterated a buy rating on CAE, which operates two primary businesses: civil aviation and defense. In the report, Poponak analyzed both CAE's civil aviation and defense businesses in isolation and compared to competitors. The civil aviation segment's growth and margin profile isn't accurately reflected in CAE's current valuation multiple, the analyst added. CAE's valuation seems to reflect that investors have assigned the defense business little to no value, Poponak wrote.

What Trump 2.0 Could Mean for the Environment
  + stars: | 2024-07-16 | by ( Brad Plumer | Lisa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As president, Donald Trump’s sweeping attempts to roll back federal environmental regulations were often stymied — by the courts, by a lack of experience, even by internal resistance from government employees. “It’s going to be easier,” said Myron Ebell, who led the transition at the Environmental Protection Agency after Mr. Trump won in 2016. “They’re going to have better people, more committed people, more experienced people. They will be able to move more quickly, and more successfully, in my view.”On the campaign trail, Mr. Trump has promised to repeal federal regulations designed to cut greenhouse gas pollution that is rapidly heating the planet. They are drafting plans to slash budgets, oust career staffers, embed loyalists in key offices and scale back the government’s powers to tackle climate change, regulate industries and restrict hazardous chemicals.
