China's factory activity swung back into expansion among smaller manufacturers in October, according to a private survey released on Friday. The Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing PMI came in at 50.3 in October, beating the median estimate of 49.7 in a Reuters poll. A PMI reading above 50 indicates expansion in activity, while a reading below that level points to contraction. This private gauge, which focuses on smaller and export-oriented firms, comes after the official PMI data, released Thursday, indicated that manufacturing activity in the country expanded for the first time since April.

LOS ANGELES — California and Nevada voters are weighing whether to repeal legal loopholes in their state constitutions that allow slavery and involuntary servitude to be used as criminal punishment. California and Nevada would join a growing national trend that started with voters in Colorado repealing involuntary servitude in 2018. Slavery and involuntary servitude were banned nationally by the 13th Amendment with one exception — as punishment for a crime. In 2016, Shawna Lynn Jones became the first incarcerated woman to die while fighting a fire in California, according to the state corrections department. "If it means we have to come back to California voters in two years or four years, then that's what we'll do," Nuñez said.

A security guard has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder charge in the death of a 32-year-old man he is accused of shooting at a hookah lounge early Sunday, police in Texas said. Teddy Lee Mills is accused of shooting Day’shaun Colen shortly after 2 a.m. at the Bravo Hookah Lounge in Abilene, where Mills was working a private security detail and Colen was a would-be patron, police said. Mills, who had a firearm, and another unarmed security guard were at the door, according to the complaint. Mills also told officers that Colen said he was “gonna get him” and that when the crowd was pushing in, he felt “them” grab his Taser. The Bravo Hookah Lounge in Abilene, Texas.

Atlanta rap star Young Thug agreed to change his plea to guilty Thursday in Georgia’s longest-running criminal trial, a stunning turn that, if approved by the judge, would bring his high-profile case to a close. I do think that seeing a woman on the ballot will, hopefully, encourage more women to vote, even if they don't vote for Harris. At the time, I thought it was going to be a landslide, like 'We're about to have our first woman president.' I don't think everybody in the U.S. will ever be ready for a woman president, but I don't think everybody in the U.S. was ready for a Black president either. Even if Kamala wins, I don't think everybody in the U.S. is ready for a woman president, just like they weren't ready for a Black president. I think Harris is just bringing a lot of new people into the process who haven't necessarily felt included before.

Samsung Electronics on Thursday reported third-quarter sales and operating profit slightly above its own expectations, but its chip business posted a sharply lower profit from the previous quarter. The semiconductor unit reported third-quarter operating profit of 3.86 trillion won (about $2.8 billion), down 40% from the previous quarter. While its memory chip unit benefited by strong demand for its artificial intelligence and conventional server products, Samsung said "inventory adjustments negatively impacted mobile demand." While artificial intelligence drove demand for advanced nodes from its foundry unit, Samsung said mobile and PC demand underperformed. ☆ Standard Chartered lifts income guidance again after beating third-quarter profit forecasts

Standard Chartered on Wednesday upgraded its 2024 income guidance as it posted profits in the third quarter that beat expectations, driven by record performance in its wealth management business. After its second quarter earnings report, Standard Chartered in July announced its largest-ever share buyback of $1.5 billion. Standard Chartered said its operating expenses rose 3% to $2.9 billion caused by inflation and business expansion efforts, although efficiency savings did offset some costs. The London-headquartered bank also lifted its 2024 income guidance on Wednesday with operating income to increase towards 10% in 2024. In July, the bank had upgraded the operating income projection to more than 7%, from 5% to 7%.

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday distanced herself from President Joe Biden’s comments that seemingly referred to Donald Trump’s supporters as “garbage,” setting off a political firestorm a week before Election Day. “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said, pausing for a moment before continuing. Harris’ campaign was quick to try to publicly defend or explain those remarks publicly. As CNN has reported, there had been growing wariness among Harris campaign aides about Biden’s propensity for gaffes, at a moment when the campaign does not want to take any unnecessary political risks. Tuesday night’s “garbage” comments from Biden only ended up confirming those existing concerns for many Democrats.

She’s now almost certain to be asked whether she also regards Trump’s backers as “garbage.” Her answer will only prolong the story.
