(Reuters) - Russian anti-aircraft units destroyed 19 Ukrainian drones over the Black Sea and the annexed Crimean peninsula and three more over other parts of Russia, the Defence Ministry said early on Thursday. "In the night from 20th to 21st September, an attempt by the Kyiv regime to commit a terrorist attack with lethal drones on sites in the Russian Federation was intercepted," the ministry said on the Telegram messaging app. The ministry report said the three other drones were downed over Kursk, Belgorod and Orlov regions in central and southern Russia. Ukrainian forces are launching attacks with increasing frequency on targets in Crimea, seized and annexed by Russia in 2014. But on Wednesday, the Ukrainian military said its forces struck a Russian Black Sea fleet command post near Sevastopol in Crimea.

Russia says Ukraine launched drone attacks on Kursk region
  + stars: | 2023-09-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Sept 4 (Reuters) - Ukraine launched drone attacks on the Kursk region of Russia overnight from Sunday to Monday, with the Russian defence ministry saying its forces had shot down two drones after midnight on Monday. The drone attack on the Kursk region, which borders Ukraine to its west, began around 1 a.m. Monday (2200 GMT Sunday), the defence ministry said on the Telegram messaging app. This followed a report Sunday evening by the governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, that debris from a downed drone sparked a fire at a non-residential building in the city of Kurchatov. Drone attacks on Russian targets, especially in Crimea - annexed by Moscow in 2014 - and in regions bordering Ukraine, have become almost a daily occurrence since two drones were destroyed over the Kremlin in early May. Ukraine rarely takes direct responsibility for such drone strikes but says destroying Russian military infrastructure helps a counteroffensive Kyiv began in June.

Sept 3 (Reuters) - A non-residential building in the western Russian city of Kurchatov caught fire on Sunday after an attack by a Ukrainian drone but emergency services put the fire out and there were no casualties, Roman Starovoit, governor of the Kursk region, said. In a post on the Telegram messaging app, Starovoit did not say which building was affected. Ukraine's Babel online outlet quoted an unnamed source as saying a drone hit a building belonging to the FSB security service. Starovoit also blamed a Ukrainian drone for damage to a building facade in Kurchatov on Sept. 1. Kurchatov is home to one of Russia's biggest nuclear plants, but there were no reports it was affected in either incident.

Sept 2 (Reuters) - The Russian Defence Ministry said on Saturday that it had brought down three Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod region, while the regional governor said that one man had been killed in a Ukrainian rocket strike on a village close to the border. Governor Roman Starovoit said a Ukrainian drone had damaged the facade of a building in the town of Kurchatov, just a few kilometres from the Kursk nuclear power station, early on Friday. Starovoit did not mention any potential damage to the Kursk nuclear power plant. The Soviet-era Kursk nuclear power station has the same graphite-moderated reactors as the Chernobyl nuclear plant. Russia and Ukraine have in the past accused each other of plotting to attack the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in Ukraine.

Ukrainian media has shared footage purporting to demonstrate the use of a "cardboard" drone. Ukraine says it used the lightweight, cheap drones to do serious damage to five Russian planes. The footage here shows the potential damage from a mid-air explosion. The advantage of the Corvo PPDS drone — which have been variously described by their manufacturer SYPAQ as being made of cardboard and of light foamboard — is in its cheapness, light weight, and disposability. A top Ukrainian advisor says the war is increasingly crossing into Russia and can't be stopped. Recent drone attacks have damaged Russian aircraft and jets far from the front lines. The fiery comments come amid increasing drone strikes inside Russian territory, including an attack over the weekend that Ukraine said damaged Russian fighter jets. Ukraine said it hit the jets with Australian-made "cardboard" drones that have a range of up to 75 miles. Drone attacks on Russia — Ukrainian-claimed or otherwise — are not new.

Ukraine claims it used cardboard drones from Australia to strike five jets at a Russian air field. In March, Australia announced delivery of the lightweight drones in an aid package to Ukraine. According to prominent pro-Russian blogger @fighterbomber, which closely follows the Russian air force, the attack was the first use of Australian-provided delivery drones made of cardboard. AdvertisementAdvertisementInsider could not independently confirm the claim, but on Tuesday Ukraine's ambassador to Australia Vasyl Mryoshnychenko vouched for it, saying in a post on X: "Cardboard drones from Australia used in attack on Russian airfield." The Corvo drones are described by SYPAQ as "the cardboard plane," but per an earlier company press release they're made from waxed foamboard.

Russia said Ukraine fired a string of drones over the weekend in an attempt to attack border regions and the capital, Moscow, in the latest strikes deep inside Russian borders. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said Sunday that its forces had intercepted Ukrainian drones overnight in the regions of Bryansk and Kursk, both of which border Ukraine. A drone crashed into an apartment building in Kursk but did not cause any injuries, the regional governor said on the Telegram messaging app. The border region of Belgorod also was attacked by drones over the weekend, according to the Russian authorities. The Russian claims had not been independently verified and Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment, as is their general custom on attacks inside Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday vowed stern retaliation for a Russian missile strike in the center of the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv that killed seven people and wounded almost 150 others the day before. He identified a 6-year-old girl named Sofia as among the dead in the attack and confirmed that the wounded included 15 children. Russia says Ukrainian drones attack three regions

MOSCOW, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Russia said Ukrainian drones had struck three separate regions on Sunday, injuring five people and forcing two of Moscow's airports to briefly divert flights. Russia's Kursk and Rostov regions, both of which border Ukraine, reported drone strikes while Russia's defence ministry said it had jammed a Ukrainian drone in the Moscow region, forcing it to crash in an unpopulated area. Kursk region's governor said that 5 people had been injured and a fire broke out when a drone hit a railway station. Ukrainian drone strikes both on border regions and on the Russian capital have become increasingly common in recent months, with repeated strikes on Moscow's financial district. Russia said in May that two Ukrainian drones tried to attack the Kremlin.

MOSCOW, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Russian air defences shot down at least four Ukrainian drones over western regions of Russia on Sunday, the defence ministry said. Three drones were shot down over Belgorod region and another over the Kursk region, the defence ministry said. There were no casualties or damage caused by the incidents, the ministry said. Drone air strikes deep inside Russia have increased since a drone was destroyed over the Kremlin in early May. Civilian areas of the capital were hit later in May and a Moscow business district was targeted twice in three days earlier this month.

MOSCOW, July 14 (Reuters) - Russia accused the West on Friday of sponsoring "nuclear terrorism" after authorities said a Ukrainian drone had struck the western Russian town of Kurchatov, where a nuclear power station similar to the ill-fated Chernobyl plant is located.
