CNN —American golfer Gary Woodland said he was “fear-driven every day, mostly around death” in the months before undergoing brain surgery last year. Yet the most debilitating symptom, Woodland explained, was a daily fear of death. Hector Vivas/Getty ImagesThe scan ruled out Parkinson’s disease, yet revealed what looked to be a tumor on his brain. “You can imagine leading up to surgery how I felt going into having my head cut open and operated on. The fear going into that was awful.”Woodland is back for the new tour season.

Meta will begin testing a system that allows posts from its microblogging platform Threads to appear on other social media services, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday. The fediverse is still tiny compared to Threads, with about 11 million users, the vast majority of them on Mastodon. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, wrote on Threads that the platform is starting with the ability to follow Threads users from other ActivityPub platforms, adding that the ability for Threads users to follow accounts from other platforms is in the works. If Threads goes through with full ActivityPub integration, people will be able to follow Threads users and see their posts without having to join the platform (Threads currently forces users to sign up through an Instagram account). Similarly, Threads users will be able to follow users and see posts from across ActivityPub's network.

A classified briefing Tuesday on Ukraine devolved into a shouting match about border security as senators described a tense meeting that did little to break the Senate’s stalemate over whether to include tighter immigration policies in the aid package. The first question instead of asking our panelists, he called on Lankford to give a five-minute talk about the negotiations on border,” Schumer said. “It was just obvious, elephant in the room issue of the administration, in their supplemental request – the second-largest element in the supplemental request is for the border. Schumer said earlier Tuesday that Republicans are free to bring up a border security package as an amendment, and if it can get 11 Democratic votes, it can pass. “They have a golden opportunity if they wanted to do border,” Schumer said.

One witness — and documenter — of this trend is Los Angeles-based multimedia artist Kevin Cooley, who has spent the last decade capturing images of fire — both wild and controlled. The photographs are a visual statement about “our desire to control nature.”But lately, Cooley finds himself drawn to a different element, with lower risks. At the same time, California was in the middle of an extreme drought, which sparked his interesting in photographing water. Using flashlights, strobe lights and even drones, Cooley takes long exposure photos of the ocean that illuminate the tides, and ebb and flow of the current, he said. A rainbow is seen over apartments in Wandsworth on the River Thames as UK house prices continue to fall, in London, Britain, August 26, 2023. REUTERS/Kevin Coombs/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - British house prices rose unexpectedly in monthly terms for the third time running in November, adding to signs that the housing market downturn has abated, mortgage lender Nationwide said on Friday. House prices rose by 0.2% on the month in November, after a 0.9% increase in October. Compared with a year ago, house prices were 2% lower - the smallest such drop in nine months. "There has been a significant change in market expectations for the future path of Bank Rate in recent months which, if sustained, could provide much needed support for housing market activity," said Robert Gardner, chief economist at Nationwide.

Q: What’s the strangest thing a seller has ever left behind after closing? In 2014, I was working with some buyers who wanted to live on a working farmoff the grid. The sellers had 16 horses, 25 chickens, threegoats, a huge potbellied pig and a Russian boar named Kevin. Aswe got closer to closing, the sellers were panicking because Kevin had escapedhis pen and was running loose on the property. We didn’t learn it wasn’t real until I called the sellers to tell them they left something behind.

British investment managers get green light for tokenised funds
  + stars: | 2023-11-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Kevin Coombs/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 24 (Reuters) - British investment managers have got the go-ahead to develop tokenised funds, in which assets are split into smaller tokens backed by blockchain technology, the industry's trade body said on Friday. Tokenisation, or fractionalisation, of funds will enable a fund's assets to trade more cheaply and transparently and investors to buy into a wider range of assets, industry proponents say. Funds authorised by Britain's Financial Conduct Authority can take the first steps towards offering tokenised funds, provided the investments are in mainstream assets and valuation and settlement arrangements don't change, the Investment Association said in a statement. Scrimgeour is chair of a working group which is working with the FCA and Britain's finance ministry to open up opportunities for tokenised funds. Investment managers and exchanges in the United States, Europe and Asia have already taken tentative steps in offering tokenised funds.

Dolly Parton ‘Rockstar’ album takeaways

CNN —It’s already a vital American truth that Dolly Parton is a national treasure, and has been for decades. From there, Parton saw a challenge to become a rockstar in her own right, and after her husband suggested she do a rock album, she embarked on the journey, culminating with Friday’s release of her appropriately titled forty-ninth (!!) Cover of "Rockstar" by Dolly Parton. Butterfly Records/APThe second track is also an original song, “World on Fire,” which dutifully tries to ruffle some feathers (like a rockstar would) by commenting on the state of the world today. Morning Bid: UK inflation to test market's upbeat mood

Ten-year and two-year Treasury yields dropped 20 basis points and the dollar marked its steepest selloff in a year, highlighting how much markets' expectations - and cash - were riding on the data. A pivot from hikes to cuts is now priced for May in the interest rate futures markets, with a 30% chance it happens as soon as March. Expectations are for a big shift down for October, mainly due to falling energy prices, with annual headline inflation seen slipping below 5% for the first time since 2021. Chipmaker Infineon (IFXGn.DE) and troubled energy company Siemens Energy (ENR1n.DE) post earnings on Wednesday, although the latter's numbers are likely to be overshadowed by Tuesday's promise of an $8 billion government backstop from Germany. A drop is forecast, while a strong reading could dampen the exuberance over rate cut expectations.

A once-robust alliance of federal agencies, tech companies, election officials and researchers that worked together to thwart foreign propaganda and disinformation has fragmented after years of sustained Republican attacks. The most recent setback came when the FBI put an indefinite hold on most briefings to social media companies about Russian, Iranian and Chinese influence campaigns. "We're having some interaction with social media companies," Wray said. "The symbiotic relationship between the government and the social media companies has definitely been fractured." Tech companies are still sharing their findings with each other, a Meta spokesperson told NBC News.

CNN —When a famous British tree was “deliberately felled” in September, pictures showed the trunk lying, horizontal, over part of Britain’s Roman-built Hadrian’s Wall. On Tuesday, Historic England – a government body that oversees preservation of ancient landmarks – confirmed part of Hadrian’s Wall where the felling took place has been damaged. The Sycamore Gap tree was widely photographed and admired prior to the felling. It also confirmed plans to work with the National Trust – a UK charity which also helps look after the site – “on a plan to repair the damage” to Hadrian’s Wall.
