New York CNN —McDonald’s said growing tensions in the Middle East have hurt its business. The Middle East doesn’t make up a huge part of its overall business. McDonald’s noted that it provided an insignificant amount of financial assistance for franchisees impacted by the war in the Middle East. That was far worse than the more-than 4% growth in the United States and other international businesses. Many McDonald’s operators in the region quickly distanced themselves from the Israeli operator’s actions.

New York CNN —Unexpected demand for Subway’s new footlong cookies has created a big cookie shortage, driving the new snack off the menu less than two weeks after its big debut. Because of the cookie’s surprising popularity, Subway has temporarily removed them from its app and third-party channels, like DoorDash, to manage demand. Subway also said that for the first time since 2016, it has added more restaurants than it lost. In the past few years under Chidsey’s purview, Subway chain has undergone a makeover in basically all aspects of its business, because it has struggled recently against its sub-slinging competition. However, some franchisees recently complained that they weren’t impressed with the new $6,000 slicers.

New York CNN —Starbucks is taking its extra virgin olive oil-infused drinks — which some customers previously complained of sending them straight to the bathroom — nationwide beginning Tuesday. On the Oleato menu are two drinks: An oat milk latte infused with the extra virgin olive oil; and a new toffeenut iced shaken espresso with golden foam, which is vanilla sweet cream infused with extra virgin olive oil into a cold foam. Schultz met olive oil producer Tommaso Asaro, who introduced him to the practice of consuming a tablespoon of olive oil each day. Schultz picked up the habit himself, wondered if he could combine it with his daily coffee routine, and asked Starbucks’ beverage team to see if they could pull it off. One pair of reviewers posted a video titled “We Tried Starbucks Olive Oil Coffee Drinks and Seriously Regret It.”Others had mixed feelings but concluded that the drinks seem more like a stunt — something worth trying but not necessarily worth coming back for.

New York CNN —The Federal Trade Commission ruled in a final order and opinion Monday that TurboTax, the popular tax filing software, engaged in deceptive advertising and banned the company from advertising its services for free unless it is free for all customers. By running ads for “free” tax services that many customers were not qualified for, the tax filing software violated the FTC Act and deceived consumers, the agency said. The FTC had first sued Intuit, TurboTax’s owner, for its deceptive advertising in 2022. Intuit cannot advertise or market any goods or services as free unless it’s free for all customers, the FTC ordered. The FTC added if the service isn’t actually free for the majority of consumers, TurboTax could state that as well.

The permanent sides, called Subway Sidekicks, will be available across the US beginning January 22. Sidekicks marks a whole new menu category for Subway, best known for their sandwiches. The additions come from customers demanding more from the menu, according to Douglas Fry, Subway’s North America president. Technomic data shows that Subway also lags in sales for sides and snacks compared to its competitors. Yearly sales at Subway US restaurants are still much lower compared to its sandwich-making rivals.

The rise of AI has elicited fear that the technology will eliminate millions of jobs around the world. New York CNN —Washington state is suing to block the proposed $25 billion merger between supermarket chains Kroger and Albertsons, warning that if approved it could raise prices and harm consumers. In a suit filed Monday by the state’s Attorney General Bob Ferguson, his reasons for opposing the merger are because it would “severely limit” grocery store options for Washington residents and “eliminate vital competition” among the brands. “This merger is bad for Washington shoppers and workers,” Ferguson said. Kroger announced it was buying Albertsons in 2022 with the transaction expecting to close later this year, depending on regulatory approval. The companies say they will reach 85 million households.
