House Speaker Mike Johnson is overseeing one of the smallest House majorities in history as Congress confronts upcoming battles over government funding and contentious fights over immigration and impeachment. The razor-thin majority presents an enormous challenge for the speaker, leaving him with almost no room for error as he navigates demands from competing wings of his party. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s office has said that he will work remotely until returning to Washington in February as he recovers from a stem cell transplant. House Republicans were nearly evenly divided in the vote, a sign of the deep rift within the conference. The fate of these politically vulnerable members will be key to whether the GOP can hold onto its majority.

"When we return next week, by necessity, the House Homeland Security Committee will move forward with Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas," Johnson wrote in a "Dear Colleague" letter. Jonathan Turley, a George Washington law professor and frequent voice for conservatives on impeachment, has argued that impeaching Mayorkas for these reasons would set a dangerous precedent. AdvertisementSome House Republicans have also voiced concern about impeaching Mayorkas, raising the prospect that the vote could be extremely close. Congress has only ever impeached one Cabinet Secretary: former Secretary of War William Belknap. Johnson can take solace in the fact that some centrist Republicans, including those that represent seats that President Joe Biden won, have expressed openness to impeaching Mayorkas.

After Netflix and WWE parent company TKO Group announced the deal Tuesday morning, it sparked questions about whether Netflix would try to buy streaming rights for one of the major sports leagues. Netflix paid more than $5 billion for 10 years of WWE's Raw and other international programming. Sarandos called the WWE Raw deal "the inverse of Formula 1," as WWE is popular in the U.S. and has a relatively small international audience. "We can build [WWE] like we have with Formula 1 through our shoulder programming," Sarandos said. The move to pay a giant rights deal is a clear shift for Netflix.

Johnson & Johnson has reached a tentative settlement to resolve an investigation by more than 40 states into claims the company misled patients about the safety of its talc baby powder and other talc-based products, the company said in a statement to CNBC on Tuesday. Those cases have for decades caused financial and public relations trouble for J&J, which contends that its talc-based products and now-discontinued talc baby powder are safe for consumers. J&J said in an October securities filing that 42 states and Washington, D.C., had launched a joint investigation into its marketing of talc-based products. New York CNN —Famed economist Larry Summers slammed Harvard’s top leaders on Sunday over concerns about how the Ivy League school is fighting antisemitism. Summers, a former president of Harvard, strongly criticized the selection of Harvard professor Derek Penslar as the co-chair of a newly-formed presidential task force on antisemitism. “I have lost confidence in the determination and ability of the Harvard Corporation and Harvard leadership to maintain Harvard as a place where Jews and Israelis can flourish,” Summers said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. The task forces will be charged with examining bias, determining root causes and compiling recommendations to combat hate. “As things currently stand, I am unable to reassure Harvard community members, those we are recruiting or prospective students that Harvard is making progress in countering anti-Semitism,” Summers said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New Speaker Mike Johnson finds himself leading House Republicans with a majority in name only. Approaching his first 100 days on the job, Johnson faces daunting choices ahead. “The House Republicans have the second-smallest majority in history," he said. Johnson and Trump talk often, but some of Trump’s strongest allies in the House are those conservatives pushing the speaker rightward and denying him a governing majority. “Speaker Johnson is in a 24-hour survival mode," said Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, a key Democratic negotiator on the border package.

They now find themselves boxed out on spending, at a time when the nation's debt has surpassed $34 trillion. And in November, the number of Republican voting against reached 93 on Johnson's initial stopgap spending bill. “I do not believe at all that he’s divisive in the Jets locker room and within their own building. While on the field he’s on a Hall of Fame trajectory, some of Rodgers’ behavior away from the sport shows a different side to the man. President Joe Biden will host Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer at the White House Wednesday afternoon to discuss his deadlocked supplemental funding bill for aid to Israel and Ukraine. Other leaders on the invite list are Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. "I'm going to tell the President what I'm telling all of you and we've told the American people: border, border, border," Johnson told reporters Wednesday. Biden initially requested a $105 billion supplemental funding package from Congress in October to aid Israel and Ukraine in their respective wars, along with securing Taiwan's defense systems and the U.S. southern border. Recent congressional squabbles have led to a near government shutdown, the ousting of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Congress' holiday recess being cut short.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will convene top congressional leaders Wednesday at the White House pressing for his $110 billion national security package at a pivotal time as senators narrow on a landmark immigration deal that could unlock the stalled aid to Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies. “I will tell the President that I’ve been seeing it consistently since the moment I was handed the gavel,” said Johnson, R-La. But the speaker leads an ambivalent House GOP majority that wants to extract its own priorities on the U.S.-Mexico border in exchange for any overseas support. The speaker has insisted any border security deal must align with the House-passed strict border security bill. “It’s an opportunity to get some really conservative border policy that we haven’t been able to get for 40 years,” he said.

(AP) — With bipartisan support, a proposed Louisiana congressional map that would create a second majority-Black district sailed through the state Senate on Wednesday and will advance to the House chamber for debate. A second majority-Black district could also result in another Democratic seat in Congress. Officials have until Jan. 30 to pass new congressional boundaries with a second majority-minority district in Louisiana. A judge on the district court signaled that she will create a map by herself if lawmakers don't complete the task. On the Senate floor Wednesday, Democrats raised concerns that under the proposed map, the Black voting-age population in Carter's district would decrease to 51%.

Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday threw cold water on the idea of striking an immigration deal with Democrats that could revive stalled legislation to send aid to Ukraine, hours before a meeting in which President Biden planned to make a renewed push for the plan. “I don’t think now is the time for comprehensive immigration reform because we know how complicated that is,” Mr. Johnson said Wednesday morning ahead of an afternoon meeting at the White House. Mr. Biden has summoned Mr. Johnson and other congressional leaders as well as the top-ranking national security committee lawmakers in Congress, in an urgent bid to break a monthslong logjam over military assistance for Ukraine and the border security policies Republicans have insisted are a requirement for the aid. “I’m going to tell the president what I’m telling all of you, what we’ve told the American people: border, border, border,” Mr. Johnson said. “We have to secure our own border before we talk about doing anything else.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, during a news conference at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, US, on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024. Under pressure from right-wing members, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., faces stark challenges in keeping the government funded and responding to a potential Senate deal that would toughen immigration laws while providing funding for Ukraine. But passing the spending deal could make it politically more difficult for Johnson to support an emerging bipartisan Senate immigration deal that the right wing of the GOP is turning against. 2 is his position, but he was careful not to reveal specifics of what the House would accept if a Senate immigration deal came together, the sources said. Johnson's allies believe GOP opponents of the spending deal may vote against it but doubt they'll come for his job.
