Republicans in Florida want to change the law so DeSantis can run for president and keep his job. The comments came as the new GOP legislature and leaders were sworn in Tuesday. Ron DeSantis could run for president without resigning from his current job. Senate President Kathleen Passidomo echoed Renner's comments, saying it would be an "honor" to have someone from Florida running for president. Under current Florida law, if DeSantis were to run for president then he would have to resign his post as governor — even if he eventually lost the presidency.

While Republicans sought to seize on that economic anxiety during the campaign, most candidates provided few specifics. “The GOP still doesn’t know what its economic policy is in a post-Trump world,” said Brian Riedl, who worked for six years as chief economist for Republican Sen. Biden said he has no plans to change his approach to the economy, despite voters’ sentiments, making a shift toward a compromise with Republicans on economic policy seemingly unlikely. “That means there will be a lot less economic policy. “Republicans are going to need to deliver on the economy, especially if the economy is worsening and inflation is worsening,” said Riedl.

Mark Kelly of Arizona faces off against newly-minted Republican candidate Blake Masters in a highly charged race for the state's US Senate seat. His opponent, Masters, has raised $12 million, spent $9.4 million, and has $2.6 million of cash still left to spend, as of October 19. Thiel's pro-Masters Saving Arizona PAC, for one, has poured more than $17 million into the race through September.

Palin, the former governor of Alaska, has known Peltola for years and served alongside her in the Alaska state house. Elon Musk seems determined to remake Twitter in his own image — with some help from the men in his trusted inner circle. They are joined in Musk’s orbit by Alex Spiro, a trial attorney with a roster of celebrity clients who reportedly led the first round of Twitter layoffs. Bloomberg reported Wednesday night that Twitter is preparing to eliminate about 3,700 jobs, or roughly half its workforce. Musk's personnel decisions suggest a possible road map for the future of Twitter, one in which policies and internal rules are drawn at least in part from the views of Musk’s consiglieres. Sacks, Calacanis, Spiro and Birchall did not immediately respond to questions about the company’s future and the nature of their roles there.

I’ll Vote for the Lesser of Evils, if There Is One

I am one of those American political misfits known as an independent voter. I voted for Barack Obama over John McCain in 2008. Four years later I pulled the lever for Mitt Romney . I didn’t vote in the last two presidential elections because none of the candidates were people I wanted to lead the country. I find little reassuring in either of the political parties, whose members collectively strike me as ignorant, sanctimonious, meshugana.
PHOENIX—Kari Lake, the Republican candidate in the Arizona governor’s race, has taken many pages from former President Donald Trump’s campaign playbook. She repeats his false claims of rampant fraud in the 2020 election. She attacks the legacy of the late Arizona GOP senator, John McCain . And she has made the media a favorite foil, even though she spent 22 years as an anchor for a local news station.
Insider reached out to House Republican leaders, GOP senators auditioning for the 2024 presidential race, the Republican National Committee, retired GOP lawmakers, seasoned Republican strategists and former Donald Trump administration officials about this disturbing phenomenon. The non-respondents included RNC chair Ronna McDaniel, former Vice President Mike Pence, National Republican Senatorial Committee chair Rick Scott, House Republican Conference chair Elise Stefanik, Florida Gov. Meghan McCain, the daughter of late Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, lashed out at West, Trump and House Republican "idiots" cheering on their reprehensible behavior. "You can say that his particular words in this particular case are not antisemitic," Rosen said Tuesday during Commentary's daily podcast. Nor have they convinced House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jim Jordan to quit hailing West and Trump as personal heroes.

The Senate race in Arizona, once seen as a likely Democrat hold, appears to have tightened amid broader signs of strength for Republicans nationwide as voters weigh issues such as inflation, abortion access and immigration policy. Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly is running for re-election this year after winning the seat in 2020. He was elected to fill out the remainder of the late Sen. John McCain ’s term and is now seeking a full term. He faces Republican Blake Masters, who worked closely with venture capitalist Peter Thiel and is backed by former President Donald Trump.
Sen. Mark Kelly is running against Republican Blake Masters in Arizona's high-profile Senate race. A Masters win could help Republicans win control of the currently 50-50 Senate. Arizona Senate candidatesKelly, a former NASA astronaut who is also married to retired Democratic congresswoman-turned-gun-control advocate Gabrielle Giffords, has jumped into a variety of issues during this first term in Congress. Masters is a first-time candidate vying to reinsert some red into the battleground state after voters handed control of the Senate delegation to Democrats Kelly (2020) and Kyrsten Sinema (2018). A Masters win would tip the balance of power to Republicans, ending the 50-50 split that's been in effect since January 2021.
Ted Cruz's campaign paid him $555,000 to cover old personal loans to his Senate committee. Ethics advocates and some Supreme Court justices warned that the decision could lead to corruption. And the one-time presidential candidate and two-term senator has the US Supreme Court to thank for it. That allowed Cruz to initiate a lawsuit against the Federal Election Commission, which eventually made its way up to the Supreme Court. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan echoed that same argument in her dissenting opinion.
Former President Barack Obama announced Saturday that he will be heading to Georgia and Michigan later this month to support Democratic candidates in the final weeks before the midterm elections. Events are set for Oct. 28 in Atlanta and Oct. 29 in Detroit, according a statement from Obama’s office. "Given the high stakes of this year’s midterm elections, President Obama wants to do his part to help Democrats win next month," the statement read. In Michigan, Obama will join Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, and Michigan Democrats up and down the ballot for a Get Out the Vote rally, according to a statement from Whitner’s office.

Meghan McCain slammed the GOP for backing Kanye West after his antisemitic comments. She called the House Judiciary GOP "idiots" after they left up a tweet lauding West. West then switched to posting from his Twitter account that day, writing that he was "going death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE." The tweet was removed from the platform, and West was locked out of his Twitter account on Sunday. McCain also hit out at West in an Instagram post, calling his antisemitic language a "cancer" that is "everywhere."
Showtime’s five-part docuseries about The Lincoln Project, the super PAC founded by multiple well-known Republican strategists and operatives with a shared contempt for Donald Trump, reminds me a lot of the organization’s work in 2020: noisy but not necessarily all that effective in realizing its stated goals. It’s not that The Lincoln Project founders shouldn’t be proud of the house they built. We also definitely didn’t need so much footage of various fans — including celebrities — and Lincoln Project members talking about how cool, popular and great the organization is. At the time of that revelation, not even The Lincoln Project disputed it. And while I won’t deny the coverage The Lincoln Project garnered during and after the 2020 election, is it all that hard to troll someone like Trump?
By historical standards, Gen X should be in charge of the US by now. Think of them as the godparents of the "Xennials" — those born in the late 1970s or early 1980s who aren't fully Gen X or millennial. No matter whether you deny the 61-year-old Obama is a boomer, Gen X is starting to get up there in age. Michael Ciaglo-Pool/Getty ImagesWhat's the US missing without a Gen X president? "It's like seeing a ghost that doesn't appear," she said of any expectation the presidency would just suddenly open up for Gen X.
