Photo: Richard Drew/Associated PressFox News parted ways with prime-time host Tucker Carlson , a surprising move that comes after he made disparaging remarks about colleagues at the network that were disclosed during a legal battle with a voting-machine company. Mr. Carlson’s departure puts an end to a decade-plus tenure at the conservative news network during which he rose to become the highest-rated host in prime-time cable news.

Fighting in Sudan intensified on Thursday morning as a bombardment by warplanes in the center of the capital, Khartoum, amounted to one of the most fearsome assaults yet in the violent days-long clashes. With two generals vying for power over the country, residents in Khartoum said that the fighting had destroyed hospitals, airfields and homes, and left civilians caught in the crossfire. Despite repeated international calls for a cease-fire, proposed pauses in the fighting have not held. A shaky truce that allowed some residents to flee from parts of Khartoum on Wednesday night has since collapsed. And concerns are mounting that the chaos could draw nearby nations — including Egypt, which has troops in Sudan; Chad; Ethiopia; and Libya — into the conflict.

Fox News has sought to position its actions and election coverage as within the mainstream. Fox News is set to find itself Monday in a place it has spent two years trying to avoid: a Delaware courtroom where a jury is expected decide a once in a generation defamation case that could have broad ramifications for the network and test the contours of modern media law. The news network, a unit of Fox Corp., is accused by voting-machine company Dominion Voting Systems of airing false claims by hosts and guests that Dominion helped rig the outcome of the 2020 U.S. presidential election in favor of Joe Biden.
THE JOVIAL MEN at the top of the Datvisjvari Pass have a rule: Anyone who wants to drive through it must drink a thimbleful of chacha, a local moonshine potent enough to power cars. As I approached, it seemed like this tipsy crew—who were working on the single-lane road leading from Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, into the mountain province of Khevsureti—had been on a break. They were snacking on khachapuri, the Georgian cheese bread, and knocking back chacha. “You not drink?” They all pointed back down the road with its hairpin turns and verdant forests. In Georgia, there’s only one acceptable answer.
Researchers let 25 AI avatars loose in a virtual town. "To be honest, I don't like Sam Moore," the AI Tom said. Jaime Sevilla, an AI researcher not involved in the study, told Insider the models behind the study could be applied to non-player characters in video games. After all, the AI agents in the study were prone to hallucinations — like failing to recall certain events — which he attributes to how the model was trained. While researchers concluded their AI agents displayed emergent human behaviors, Woolridge said "we need to be skeptical" and "question" what AI tells us at face value.
Fox had denied allegations made in a lawsuit by a Venezuelan businessman. Fox News and former host Lou Dobbs have settled a defamation lawsuit brought by Venezuelan businessman Majed Khalil , who alleged he was falsely accused of having helped rig the 2020 U.S. presidential election against Donald Trump. In a letter filed in a New York federal court on Saturday, the parties said they had reached a confidential agreement to resolve the case. “This matter has been resolved amicably by both sides,” a Fox News representative said. “We have no further comment.” Mr. Dobbs and a lawyer for Mr. Khalil declined to comment.

In 2012, German theater director Thomas Ostermeier staged a highly publicized Arabic-language performance of “Hamlet” in the West Bank. If this seems like a curious choice in the circumstances, it may be because Americans tend to think of the tragedy in familial and existential terms. It’s easy to forget that Hamlet is, as well as a grieving son, also a political subversive weighing whether to violently oppose a corrupt and unlawful government. For Palestinians, this aspect of the play was unmistakable. The novel’s narrator is 38-year-old Sonia Nasir, who was raised in an Arab family in Israel but has mostly lived in London, maintaining a career as a mid-tier stage actress.
Escape to a Grand Hotel… for $10 (Tip Included)

I’VE ALWAYS had a weakness for elegant, old-world hotels. Maybe I’ve read too much Stefan Zweig, the Austrian novelist who set his work (like his 1927 novella, “Twenty-four Hours in the Life of a Woman”) in such lavish places. Or perhaps I’ve viewed “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” Wes Anderson’s 2014 confectionery pastiche, too many times. ); or a suite named after an obscure writer who stayed for one night in 1883. Rarely, though, have I slumbered in one of these old-world gems.
How do I buy tickets? Ticket sales for the Paris Olympics’ almost 10 million spectator spots have already begun, but it’s not too late to snag some of your own. The first phase of sales, in which some 3.25 million tickets were sold, ended in March. If you missed that, don’t worry: There’s still time to enter the draw for the second phase of ticket sales, which closes on April 20 at 6 p.m. Central European Time. There are more than 750 events to choose from, so perusing the Paris 2024 calendar, seating plans and ticket prices ahead of booking is a good idea.
Before becoming a billionaire, Mark Cuban slummed it in an apartment with five other guys, sleeping on the floor and using "nasty" towels taken from a Motel 6. Those circumstances may seem pretty bleak, but they're exactly what drove Cuban to put his all into entrepreneurship. Cuban, who has an estimated net worth of $6.5 billion, referenced his "Shark Tank" co-star Daymond John's phrase "the power of broke," saying it's "one of the defining elements" of any successful business owner. Most people consult with friends and explore their idea on Google, but ultimately never follow through, Cuban said. Disclosure: CNBC owns the exclusive off-network cable rights to "Shark Tank."

Ana Cabrera previously worked at CNN as an anchor and national correspondent. MSNBC tapped former CNN anchor Ana Cabrera to host its 10 a.m. hour, as the news channel reshapes its daytime lineup to focus on straight-news reporting instead of opinion and analysis. Ms. Cabrera’s new show, “Ana Cabrera Reports,” will debut April 10, the network said Wednesday, filling what was an open time slot. Ms. Cabrera previously worked at CNN as an anchor and national correspondent. She left late last year after nearly a decade at the network.
“Executives at SVB and Signature [Bank] took wild risks and must be held accountable for exploding their banks,” Warren said. Republican Senators say the Fed’s focus on climate change led to banking turmoilRepublican Senators repeatedly insinuated on Tuesday that the recent US banking turmoil came as a result of the Federal Reserve’s focus on climate change. In his opening statement, Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, the ranking member of the banking committee, called the Fed’s focus on climate change a waste of time. It’s what our supervisors do all the time.”In an interview with Montana Public Radio in 2014, Daines said that “the jury’s still out” on whether climate change is real. The public reasonably expects supervisors to require that banks understand, and appropriately manage, their material risks, including the financial risks of climate change.”
Inside CNN, some staffers said that they wished the network’s journalism got more attention than the ratings decline. CNN is finalizing a deal for “CBS Mornings” anchor Gayle King to host a weekly prime-time show, according to people familiar with the situation, as network boss Chris Licht experiments with new programming to counter a steep ratings slide. Ms. King, 68 years old, is expected to begin hosting a once-a-week show this fall, while continuing her duties at CBS, the people said. CNN is also in conversation with former NBA player Charles Barkley about potentially joining a show with Ms. King, they said.
Dominion Voting Systems is suing Fox News for defamation, alleging the network aired false claims that its technology helped rig the 2020 election. Internal Fox News communications released in the legal proceedings show that the network was concerned about alienating its audience and gave airtime to election-fraud claims. Dominion is citing that evidence to argue that Fox knowingly spread falsehoods. Fox says it simply reported newsworthy allegations, and that Dominion has taken internal communications out of context. A trial is scheduled to begin April 17.
LONDON, March 6 (Reuters) - Two former JP Morgan credit bankers on Monday launched a new impact investment advisory firm focused on emerging market infrastructure, with a minority stake by British insurer Legal & General's (LGEN.L) alternative investments arm. The firm, ImpactA Global, aims to help address the World Bank's estimated need for $1 trillion in annual investment in emerging market infrastructure to meet development goals. Da Costa Mendes, a former JPMorgan executive director, shares the top job at ImpactA with co-founder Victoria Miles, who had served as a managing director of the Wall Street firm. ImpactA aims to bring in investors such as development finance institutions, export credit agencies and institutional asset managers to provide debt financing to these projects. ImpactA is among the very few investment firms focused solely on emerging market infrastructure debt, with a global rather than regional focus, she added.
Central London's City of Westminster is its political heart, while the City of London is where the capital's financial decisions happen. But be warned: Several paths across Hyde Park are pedestrian-only, and police often fine people who cycle on them. The City of London is a blend of old and new, with St Paul's Cathedral close to skyscrapers as well as Roman ruins. While north London has Hampstead Heath, south of the river is Richmond Park, which dwarfs its northern counterpart in size. There's also a branch in central London's Covent Garden — the flower-filled restaurant The Petersham — that has an sit-down deli and bar.
Despite student loan borrowers being offered forbearances during previous natural disasters, Kvaal wrote, default rates still skyrocketed when payments resumed. ″[T]he one-time student loan debt relief program was intended to avoid" skyrocketing default rates, Kvaal added. "These student loan borrowers had the reasonable expectation and belief that they would not have to make additional payments on their federal student loans," Kvaal said. That law allows the Education Department to make modifications to federal student loan programs during national emergencies. 'A disastrous blow to Black Americans'The country's $1.7 trillion student loan crisis has hit Black Americans especially hard.
TURIN, Italy — Making his first speaking appearance since sexual assault allegations derailed his career, actor Kevin Spacey used a colorful Italian term to thank the National Cinema Museum in the northern city of Turin on Monday for inviting him. “By presenting this award, they are making a strong defense of artistic achievement and for that they should be applauded,” Spacey said. After multiple allegations of sexual assault surfaced, the actor lost his starring role on the Netflix series “House of Cards” and saw other opportunities dry up. Spacey did not directly address the allegations while accepting the award or during the hourlong class. After the master class, fans lined up to take selfies and get DVDs signed.

Dollar, euro rangebound ahead of U.S. inflation report
  + stars: | 2023-01-11 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The dollar was little changed on Wednesday versus the euro and other major currencies as traders held off from making big moves ahead of U.S. inflation data on Thursday, which may offer a clearer picture of where interest rates are headed. The euro was up 0.3% at $1.07675 against the dollar. "Unless the global growth backdrop continues to improve more materially, we expect dollar downside to remain constrained," Rosenberg said. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, including the euro, dipped 0.068% to 103.18. The Australian dollar edged up 0.04% to $0.6896 after data showed the annual pace of inflation increased to 7.3% in November, leaving room for more rate hikes.
