UBS has highlighted several stock ideas it favors for 2024, as it forecasts massive cuts to interest rates next year. The investment bank expects the U.S. will see slower economic growth and strong disinflation leading to an interest rate cut of 275 basis points . Given the economic outlook, UBS strategists recommend a number of trades to clients for 2024. BlackRock files for spot ethereum ETF to further crypto push
  + stars: | 2023-11-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BlackRock is proposing to convert the trust to a "spot" ETF, which means it will own ether instead of futures products tied to the crypto token. While futures-based crypto ETFs have previously been approved by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the regulator has long contended that the spot crypto market is prone to fraud and manipulation. BlackRock dipped its toes in the crypto space with its filing for a spot bitcoin ETF in June. Coinbase Custody, a unit of crypto exchange Coinbase (COIN.O), will hold the proposed ETF's ether in custody. The company is also the proposed custodian of BlackRock's bitcoin ETF.

Solar stocks could rebound in the second half of 2024 after taking a beating this year, though the industry's recovery depends largely on whether the Federal Reserve raises interest rates again. The rally comes as the residential solar industry looks toward the end of a rough year, with demand softening significantly as repeated rate hikes made installations unattractive for consumers. "The big headwind is interest rates," said Julien Dumoulin-Smith, a stock analyst who covers clean energy for Bank of America. Inventory problem The residential solar companies misread the market this year after a record 2022. The residential solar stocks will probably be broadly revisited on the buyside sometime around the spring of 2024, Blanchard said, though this also depends on what the Federal Reserve does with interest rates.

BlackRock registered the iShares Ethereum Trust as a Delaware statutory trust on Thursday. Earlier this year, BlackRock registered a bitcoin trust in the same manner and a week later filed an application with the SEC to launch a spot bitcoin ETF. BlackRock declined to comment on the trust's creation or on any plans for an ETF filing. To date, roughly a dozen ETF providers have filed to create spot bitcoin ETFs, or convert existing products into spot ETFs, helping fuel the recent rally in the cryptocurrency. BlackRock’s history with Blackstone means a reunion with Stephen Schwarzman’s $110 billion firm is a persistent Wall Street rumor. BlackRock’s funds operate under a single name, so uniting with Carlyle (CG.O) or Apollo Global Management (APO.N) would pose a branding challenge. Fink might covet MSCI (MSCI.N), the $38 billion firm which aggregates many of the benchmarks tracked by BlackRock’s ETFs. Michael Burry, best known for calling 2008's subprime mortgage crisis, just added a new notch in his belt by predicting the latest market correction led by tech stocks. The California-based investor, who now runs his hedge fund Scion Asset Management, had amassed massive bets against the stock market in the second quarter. These 20,000 options contracts were against shares worth $738.8 million at the end of the second quarter. These two indices fell into correction territory this week , making Burry's bets lucrative in theory. Also in the second quarter, Burry bought small stakes in travel names Expedia and MGM Resorts , as well as health care plays Cigna and CVS Health .

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsOct 26 (Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has eight to 10 filings of possible exchange-traded products for bitcoin in front of it for consideration, SEC Chair Gary Gensler said Thursday. Bitcoin has rallied this week on speculation that SEC approval is imminent for a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) - seen as a driver of demand because it would allow investors to obtain direct exposure to the cryptocurrency via an exchange-listed product. To date, the SEC has approved only ETFs tied to bitcoin futures contracts. Anticipation around spot ETFs has been rising after the SEC opted not to appeal a court ruling it had been wrong to reject an application from Grayscale Investments to convert its existing bitcoin trust into a spot bitcoin ETF.

Morning Bid: Big Tech reports as bond yields recoil
  + stars: | 2023-10-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
The two tech giants report after the bell on Tuesday, with Meta (META.O) following on Wednesday and Amazon (AMZN.O) on Thursday. Partly lifted by the year's artificial intelligence craze, the tech behemoths have clearly flattered year-to-date gains of 10% in the overall S&P500. And yet the seemingly endless squeeze in bond markets since midyear has seen megacap indexes (.NYFANG) retreat some 12% from their highs for the year. The upshot of the whole picture is to give U.S. stock futures a lift ahead of the open on Tuesday - with Asia and European bourses in positive territory too as bond markets stabilised. Ten-year U.S. Treasury yields held about 4.83% - some 19 basis points below Monday's peak at 5.02%.

Oct 24 (Reuters) - U.S. digital currency asset manager Grayscale Investments on Tuesday introduced five crypto sector indices along with FTSE Russell, less than two months after winning a court backing to create an exchange-traded fund based on spot bitcoin. Earlier this month, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters the SEC was not planning to appeal the court ruling, fueling hopes that the filings could be approved soon. The FTSE-Grayscale indices would track the performance of crypto assets in five categories - currencies, smart contract platforms, financials, consumer and culture and utilities and services. "Investors have increasingly expressed interest in diversifying beyond crypto's largest assets - Bitcoin and Ethereum - and many look to Grayscale to better understand this robust, evolving asset class," CEO Michael Sonnenshein said. All the five indices will be reassessed quarterly, Grayscale said.

On Friday, the S & P 500 closed below its 200-day moving average for the first time since March 17. If the total-return version of the index closes below that level for five straight days, then the $2 billion Pacer Trendpilot US Large Cap ETF (PTLC) will automatically sell some of its all-stock portfolio to shift to a 50-50 split between equities and Treasury bills. And if the 200-day moving average itself then starts to fall, the fund will go to 100% T-bills. Still, the fund's rule tied to the 200-day moving average is an example of how the move of a stock or index across a widely-followed indicator can cause volatility. Year to date, the fund is up just under 5% — well below the gain of more than 11% for the SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) .

Bitcoin extended its weekly gains on Friday, briefly topping $30,000 at one point for the second time this week, as confidence a spot bitcoin ETF will soon be greenlit grew and crypto investors continued weighing uncertainty in the U.S. and abroad. The price of the flagship cryptocurrency was recently up nearly 3% on Friday at $29,602.80, according to Coin Metrics. It's on pace for a 11% weekly gain, its best since June 23 when it added 17%. Higher yields historically have had a negative effect on bitcoin, but the crypto asset is benefiting from a key catalyst investors have been watching all year: the approval of what would be the first spot bitcoin ETF in the U.S. Earlier this week, JPMorgan said the Securities and Exchange Commission is likely to approve an ETF in the next few months.

Analyst Corinne Blanchard halved SolarEdge's price target to $150 from $300, although this still implies 32% potential upside from the stock's Thursday close.
