Minneapolis CNN —US inflation may have remained elevated in July, but consumers just wanted to have some fun. It’s the strongest monthly spending gain since January; however, underlying data indicates this type of activity may be on borrowed time. The Personal Consumption Expenditures index showed that prices increased 0.2% on a monthly basis and 3.3% annually. Economists were expecting monthly increases of 0.2% for the headline and core indexes and 3.3% and 4.2%, respectively, for the annual numbers. Even when adjusted for inflation, spending surged in July, rising by 0.6% from the month before.

Sephora "performed exceptionally well" with strength in North America in the first half of the year, the beauty retailer's owner LVMH (LVMH.PA) said last month. Retailers have also flagged the impact from Americans prioritizing experiences like movies, vacations and concerts over discretionary purchases. A Home Depot store is shown in the Little Havana neighborhood in Miami, Florida, September 18, 2015. "Mega-retailers are returning to 'just-in-time' inventory strategies, killing the 'just in case' promise of the pandemic's supply chain snarl," said Susquehanna analyst Bascome Majors. During the second quarter, the Big 4 retailers combined reduced inventories by 4%, the largest quarter-over-quarter drawdown since 2015, Majors said in a client note. No longer swimming in unsold merchandise puts them in a better position to bring in new seasonal goods for the all-important peak holiday season. Despite enthusiasm for new seasonal products, retailers remain cautious.

A 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST all-electric pickup truck on display at the International Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York on April 13, 2022. Tight inventory and sky-high prices have kept interested truck buyers on the sidelines, but as the market cools, shoppers are coming across better deals. Pickup trucks have larger fuel tanks, allowing these vehicles to have longer ranges. Additionally, pickup trucks are beneficial for the work many people do in these areas, such as farming, ranching and energy production. Thus, owning a pickup truck can be key in regions with lots of heavy-duty, hands-on work, Waatti said.

Lowe's said disposable income at U.S. households started to improve over the past quarter, which is boding well for the industry. "We started to see consumer sentiment turn more positive on the Do-It-Yourself customer side... What we're looking for now is just that the (sentiment improvement sustains)," CEO Marvin Ellison said in an interview. Lowe's second-quarter per-share earnings of $4.56 also topped estimates of $4.49, driven by falling lumber prices and tighter cost management.

Stores have been pushing up Christmas merchandise earlier and earlier in recent years. In 2021, Amazon and Walmart, afraid of tepid consumer demand because of the pandemic, initiated holiday sales as early as October. The same pattern was repeated last year, effectively elongating the year-end holiday shopping season. “I expect an ever-growing holiday season is here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future,” said Zak Stambor, senior retail & ecommerce analyst with Insider Intelligence. Among the festive items were Christmas tree ornaments, festive ribbons, plush elves and tabletop ornaments.

But it could be explained by magnetic fields — fields that were, in fact, found to be so strong that it was determined to be the most magnetic massive star ever recorded. It even gave rise to a new definition: a “massive magnetic helium star.”Now, scientists suspect that one day, the star will collapse in a supernova explosion. But it’s a massive step forward in unlocking the mysteries of magnetars, which have confounded scientists for decades. The mysteries of a magnetic starThe massive magnetic helium star at the heart of the study is part of a two-star system called HD 45166. Customer transactions fell for the ninth straight quarter, down 1.8% in the second quarter, but smaller than the 4.8% fall in the first quarter. Comparable sales fell 2% in the quarter, while analysts had expected a 3.54% drop, according to Refinitiv IBES data.
