Alongside classic beach towns like Bodrum and Alaçatı, two of the coast’s loveliest spots are the little-known seaside town of Ayvalık and the nearby island of Cunda. Near the Taksiyarhis Memorial Museum, in a beautifully renovated historic house with large arched windows, is Moyy Atölye. For a truly Aegean dining experience inside an olive grove, Karina Ayvalık is worth the 10-minute drive south to the village of Küçükköy. “I can breathe in the Aegean air and feel history as I walk through the old streets with their historic houses. Getting lost on Cunda leads to discoveries – like the Cunda Taksiyarhis Rahmi M. Koç Museum inside a renovated Greek Orthodox church with a collection of antique cars, motorcycles and toys.

Opinion | The Case for Obligation

The roots of these mammoth trees, stretching some 200 feet into the air above us, run only six to 12 feet deep. Instead of growing down, they grow out, extending dozens of feet to each side, enmeshing themselves with the roots of their neighbors. This is why we never see a lone redwood: They can survive only in a grove, bound together in obligation. But in our age of autonomy, efficiency, boundaries and self-care, we too often deprioritize, if not overlook altogether, the wellspring of strength and meaning that comes from obligation. If we commit to certain people and activities, if we feel an obligation to show up for them, then it’s likely that we will, indeed, show up.

KYIV, Ukraine—Russian forces launched a wave of drones and missiles at Ukraine over the weekend, while a Ukrainian counterattack continued on the outskirts of Bakhmut, killing a Russian commander and his deputy. Russia’s Defense Ministry said Sunday that it had launched a missile attack in western Ukraine’s Ternopil region. The missiles hit and killed Ukrainian soldiers and destroyed arms depots and Western military systems that Ukraine was planning to send to the front line, the ministry said.
For Ande Flower, the first year of the pandemic coincided conveniently with a personal commitment to staying single. Flower began transitioning from female to male in 2018, following a move from Seattle to Pacific Grove, Calif., for a new job. At the turn of 2020, he began a new chapter of his life publicly living as a man. Flower, an urban planner focused on affordable housing in the Central California region, vowed to spend the year getting to know himself. So, in December 2020, he cautiously ventured onto OkCupid and quickly became captivated by Veronica Savage’s unique dating profile.
The leader of Russian paramilitary group Wagner threatened to withdraw his troops from the front line in Ukraine, citing growing losses, in a move that raises fresh tensions between Moscow’s military leaders ahead of an expected offensive by Kyiv’s forces. Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said his forces would leave their positions in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut on May 10 after delivering an expletive-riddled broadside against Moscow’s military leadership, which he accused of withholding ammunition.
Drones struck the Kremlin in the early hours of Wednesday, said the Russian government, which blamed the attack on Ukraine. Two unmanned aircraft launched by Ukraine crashed into the Kremlin after they were downed by electronic-warfare systems, according to a statement by the Kremlin press service.
Government officials, worried about a constrained labor force in a state where population growth has stalled, have taken a cover-the-waterfront approach. After raising starting wages from $17 an hour to around $24 and overhauling hiring strategies, Drees still has 200 open jobs at this and two nearby facilities, where he is hoping to add to current staffing of 1,200. That reshuffling may be one reason the Fed is finding it harder than expected to slow a job market struggling to match workers into open positions. Minnesota has had a particularly large imbalance: The 12-month moving average of available positions last year reached 2.75 for every unemployed person. "Nowadays you look online and there are just hundreds of day-shift job positions," he said.
A Russian rocket barrage left at least one person dead and almost two dozen injured in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv after months of relative calm there, as Russian forces continued to push to capture the city of Bakhmut in the east. Rescue workers on Thursday were battling blazes and sifting through the ruins of residential blocks in Mykolaiv after four Russian Kalibr rockets struck a high-rise apartment building and a private home in the city, authorities said.

Bed Bath & Beyond on Sunday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after a series of last-ditch efforts to raise enough equity to keep the business alive failed at the eleventh hour. Bed Bath has been hanging on by a thread ever since but has refused to go down without a fight. Days after the second stock offering was announced, Bed Bath said it had partnered with liquidator Hilco Global to boost its inventory levels. Soon, though, Bed Bath revealed in a securities filing that it didn't have enough cash to pay its debts and had defaulted on its credit line with JPMorgan. Under the reduced credit agreements, Bed Bath was on the hook for monthly interest payments.

Fires erupted at a power station in the Russian border region of Belgorod overnight, a blaze that left part of the regional capital without power and that Russian military correspondents attributed to a Ukrainian drone attack. “The cause of this is the actions of our enemies,” wrote Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov on Russian social-media platform VK. “The most important thing is that no one was injured,” he said.
Farmers in Poland and elsewhere have voiced anger over Ukrainian grain shipments to their country, which have depressed local grain prices. Plans by Poland and Hungary to suspend imports of Ukrainian grain, in a bid to appease farmers hit by falling prices, triggered a warning from Brussels on Sunday and boosted tensions between the two countries and Brussels. Prices of grain in both countries have dropped since the EU scrapped duties and quotas on Ukrainian grain imports last year. Authorities in Brussels removed those restrictions after Ukraine’s grain exports were redirected westward over land to Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which cut off ports to traditional maritime export routes.
