German Finance Minister Christian Lindner on Friday warned that if the U.S. kicked off a trade war with the European Union, there could be retaliation. Trade is one of the main pillars of the German economy, suggesting heightened tensions, uncertainty and tariffs would hit the country harder than others. The rise of online betting has led the commercial gambling industry to balloon worldwide, posing a significant threat to public health, according to a new report. The report, published Thursday, comes from a public health commission on gambling convened by the medical journal The Lancet. The report highlighted the role online gambling has played in the rising availability of commercial gambling as a whole. Shares of Lilium tanked Thursday after the air taxi firm said in a filing that its two main subsidiaries will file for insolvency in the coming days. The German aerospace startup's shares plunged more than 60% before paring losses to 45% following the news. Lilium was seeking to raise 50 million euros ($54 million) of loans from the state coffers, however its request was rejected by lawmakers. In all, Lilium was trying to raise a convertible loan of 100 million euros. CNN —The US and Western allies are moving forward with a $50 billion loan package to Ukraine backed by the profits of frozen Russian assets, which includes a US contribution of $20 billion, the White House announced Wednesday. “Ukraine will receive the assistance it needs now, without burdening our taxpayers,” said White House deputy national security advisor for international economics Daleep Singh. The US will disperse at least half of its $20 billion loan by this December, according to Singh. European lawmakers on Tuesday approved a loan of up roughly $37.7 billion (35 billion euros) for Ukraine backed by the frozen Russian assets. Should a peace agreement be reached in the conflict, either the Russian assets will stay frozen and generate interest to repay the loans until they’re repaid, or Russia will pay for the damage it has caused.

All three men face one count of sex trafficking and 15 counts of interstate prostitution related to alleged misconduct that spanned from December 2008 to March 2015. The indictment in U.S. District Court in Long Island alleges that the defendants and others "operated an international sex trafficking and prostitution business" during that time. - German software giant SAP reported a bottom line undermined by heavy restructuring costs, but lifted forecasts for the year ahead. Europe should avoid regulating artificial intelligence and focus its attention on the results of the technology instead, the CEO of German enterprise tech giant SAP told CNBC Tuesday. Christian Klein, who has held the top job at SAP since April 2020, said Europe risks falling behind the U.S. and China if it overregulates the AI sector. While it's important to mitigate the risks associated with AI, Klein argued that regulating the tech while it's still in its infancy would be misguided. "Especially for the startup scene here in Europe, it's very important to think about the outcome of the technology but not to regulate the AI technology itself."

European markets are heading toward a mixed start to the new trading week. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index is expected to open 17 points higher at 8,373, Germany's DAX down 12 points at 19,644, France's CAC up 1 point at 7,611 and Italy's FTSE MIB up 55 points at 35,087, according to data from IG. Regional markets had ended last week on a high note after the European Central Bank announced its third interest rate cut of the year last Thursday, lowering the deposit rate by another 25 basis points, as inflation risks in the European Union are seen to be easing faster than anticipated. Overnight, Asia-Pacific markets were mixed as traders assessed China's loan prime rate announcement, with focus also on Japan's general election at the end of this week. Stateside, stock futures ticked higher Sunday night after the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 notched their best weekly win streaks of 2024.

CNN —A year after Collins Dictionary named “AI” its word of the year, the buzz around artificial intelligence is only getting louder. AI and robotics were the big themes at Gitex Global, which bills itself as the world’s largest tech event and ran Monday to Friday last week at Dubai’s World Trade Centre. “I think what (was) very exciting this year (was) the focus on AI and deep tech,” said Trixie LohMirmand, executive vice president of Dubai World Trade Centre and CEO at KAOUN International, which organizes the event. Several companies launched new products at this year’s show, including Dubai-based deep tech company Xpanceo, which debuted the new prototypes of its smart contact lenses. A prototype of an Xpanceo contact lens at Dubai's Gitex.
