Russian actor Artur Smolyaninov told Novaya Gazeta he is willing to fight for Ukraine. Smolyaninov, who is living in exile, starred in one of President Vladimir Putin's favorite movies. Smolyaninov was once a beloved actor in Russia, known as Russia's "Rambo," a reference to the action movies starring Sylvester Stallone. Last summer, he told a journalist that Russia's war was a catastrophe. US-born actor Steven Seagal has regularly advanced Russian talking points, notably when visiting the site of a destroyed Ukrainian prison in Donetsk last August.

Jan 12 (Reuters) - The International Tennis Federation announced on Thursday that it was ending its Davis Cup partnership with Gerard Pique's investment group Kosmos. In 2018, the ITF had unveiled the 25-year, $3 billion partnership with former Barcelona soccer player Pique's investment group amid much fanfare. It said then that the package to revamp the Davis Cup competition would safeguard the future of the sport as it would "deliver long-term benefits for players, nations, fans, sponsors and broadcasters". "The ITF can confirm that its partnership with Kosmos Tennis for Davis Cup is ending in its fifth year," the ITF said in a statement. The partnership increased participation, prize money and interest in Davis Cup and produced funding to support the global development of our sport."

[1/3] Australian Cardinal George Pell gestures as he speaks during an interview with Reuters in Rome, Italy December 7, 2020. Archbishop Peter Comensoli, the Archbishop of Melbourne, said Pell had died from heart complications following hip surgery. An Australian appeals court ruling in 2020 quashed convictions that Pell sexually assaulted two choir boys in the 1990s. Pell took pride in having set up one of the world's first schemes to compensate victims of child sexual abuse in Melbourne. The inquiry, known as a Royal Commission, began in 2013 a five-year investigation into child sex abuse in the Catholic Church and other institutions.
Before she ever hit the big screen, M3GAN was a social media icon. The killer android doll is the star of the film "M3GAN," which released nationwide Friday. Models perform the viral dance at a special screening of "M3GAN" in New York on Wednesday. Like other viral phenomena before it, M3GAN’s social media success was a happy accident — something Johnstone didn't see coming. "That’s incredible”He credits some of the film's early praise to social media buzz.
The most chilling moment in Gerard Johnstone’s new horror film, “M3GAN,” comes early. Its wildly popular — and immediately viral — trailer seems to give away the entire story, beat by beat, but what it can’t convey is the picture’s delightfully oddball tone, which is poised at a peculiar juncture of slasher horror and self-aware satire. Gemma, dressed in flannels, so you know she’s an antisocial nerd, has developed M3GAN, short for Model 3 Generative ANdroid. As a character, M3GAN is a marvel of design, combining body actor (Amie Donald), voice (Jenna Davis), animatronics, makeup and special effects. (“Humanity kills every day, just to make its existence more bearable,” M3GAN cackles, presumably after doing some online reading about Apple and Foxconn’s Longhua facility.)

[1/3] Soccer Football - LaLiga - Villarreal v Real Madrid - Estadio de la Ceramica, Villarreal, Spain - January 7, 2023 Villarreal's Gerard Moreno scores their second goal from the penalty spot REUTERS/Pablo MoranoJan 7 (Reuters) - Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat at Villarreal on Saturday after a goal and assist from striker Gerard Moreno, giving leaders Barcelona a chance to move ahead in the title race. Real stay second, level on 38 points with Barca who visit fourth-placed Atletico Madrid on Sunday, while Villarreal's third straight league win moves them up to fifth spot. Yeremy had the best chance of the first half after he was played through on goal by Moreno, but Thibaut Courtois was quickly off his line to block the shot. Madrid grew into the game following Villarreal's goal, with Benzema and Vinicius continuing to orchestrate the champions' attacking efforts. Moreno converted after Madrid's protests had calmed down, sending Courtois the wrong way to put his side back in the lead.
Late one night in New Zealand, while director Gerard Johnstone was typing up plans for a horror movie about a toy android that turns evil, a menacing funk tune came on and triggered a thought: What if the doll could dance? “I wasn’t sure if it was one of those ideas that would seem terrible when I woke up the next morning,” he said. His whim would help make the movie “M3GAN” a viral marketing hit long before its Jan. 6 release.

The amount of new public-sector debt investors will have to absorb in 2023 will be twice as much as the previous record a decade ago, BofA notes. As early as November, the ECB's bond market contact group cited the high amount of debt private investors would have to buy as the most frequently mentioned concern. JPMorgan, the leader for euro government debt sales, expects a fall. The biggest challenge for governments will be timing, Dutch debt office head Saskia van Dun told Reuters last week. They will also have to be careful when picking maturities to issue and compensate investors enough to buy the debt, investors said.
Lessons From 2022 for Elitists and Authoritarians

The temptation to look back on a passing year for clues to a larger historical narrative is irresistible. Despite the inevitable short-termism of late-December amateur historiography, I’m not going to resist it. For some, 2022 was the year when liberty fought back. Russia’s disastrous war in Ukraine, China’s futile war on Covid and Iran’s brutal war on its own women are testaments to the evil and folly of a system in which leaders face no accountability. Their failures and cruelties—and the tragic human cost—call for humility from those in the West who have spent the past few years denouncing liberal democracy and its works.

The S&P 500 banks index (.SPXBK) has slumped some 11% this month against a 5.5% drop for the broader index (.SPX) in the same period. While bank stocks have traded broadly in line with the S&P 500 throughout the year, their decline accelerated in recent weeks, with the S&P 500 bank index now off over 24% in 2022. The S&P 500 is down 19% year-to-date, on pace for its biggest annual percentage drop since 2008. Expectations of a slowdown led Todd's firm to sell some of its bank shares earlier this year. King Lip, chief strategist at Baker Avenue Wealth Management, said his firm recently bought bank stocks, convinced that any hit to U.S. growth will likely be moderate.
With the so-called “Twitter Files,” Elon Musk is openly engaged in a game of information warfare, one that is shining a spotlight on the fragmented and partisan state of the modern day media landscape. That was the case on Monday when the fifth installment of the Twitter Files were released revealing some of the behind-the-scenes debate that preceded Donald Trump’s ban. Gerard Baker, the conservative former top editor of The Wall Street Journal, wrote Monday: “The Twitter Files tell us nothing new. There is a downside, however, to newsrooms generally choosing to avoid the Twitter Files mess: doing so allows the saga to become defined by dishonest actors in right-wing media. When I searched Google for the term “Twitter Files,” the three top stories on Monday were from Fox News, the New York Post, and the Washington Examiner.
"Oh FFS (for fuck's sake)," former Estonian president Toomas Hendrik Ilves said on Twitter, encapsulating the general feeling among many of France's eastern allies. The annoyance among eastern allies has undermined Macron's own policy agenda to beef up European "strategic autonomy" separate from the U.S.-led NATO umbrella, with eastern allies now trusting the United States more for their defence. An eastern European diplomat said Macron had "misread" Russia once and the fear was he would do so again. The backbone of Macron's foreign policy since 2017 has been to launch initiatives and go against the grain. However, an increasing number of critics and allies see his thrust on Russia as his major foreign policy mistake.

Strong sugar prices help Tereos offset high production costs

PARIS, Dec 6 (Reuters) - French sugar group Tereos reported strong first-half results on Tuesday, including a net profit and a sharp rise in earnings, as high sugar and ethanol prices helped offset an increase in production costs. Over the same period, adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 132% to 464 million euros. In Brazil, where Tereos is among the largest sugar and ethanol producers, the group should benefit from expected high prices and a higher sugarcane crushing volume, at 17.3 million tonnes, up from 15.6 million tonnes in 2021. However, Tereos expects its net debt at March 31, 2023 to be higher than at March 31, 2022 as higher costs led to a rise in working capital. Tereos said in October it would raise the price at which it will buy sugar beet from its members by 40% from last year.

“Dining With Nazis” sounds like the title of the latest Coen brothers film or a recently unearthed memoir of a favored restaurateur from the Third Reich. When it describes the social life of a declared candidate for president of the United States, we have a right to ask what it might mean. News of Donald Trump’s recent soiree at Mar-a-Lago with Nicholas Fuentes , a man whose repugnance stands in inverse relationship to his intellectual capacity, reminds us that the former and perhaps future president’s ability to attain new levels of notoriety remains impressively undimmed. Also at the table was noted musician, philosopher and apparently fellow candidate for the highest office Kanye West, who calls himself Ye. Mr. West has of late added to his repertoire of lyrical achievement the warning that he was about to go “death con 3 on Jewish people,” so it’s not unreasonable to infer some wider significance from this symposium of disordered minds.
