The stock market this year has been led by just a handful of the biggest and best tech companies. Just look at the S & P 500 market-cap weighted index, which is viewed as a barometer of the overall stock market. Compare that to the much smaller 3% year-to-date increase in the S & P 500 equal-weight index, which treats each company's stocks the same regardless of market value. It's hard to turn off the monitors and wait for your seven stocks to come back after a terrible year. On top of all that, how many experts really knew heading into 2023 that these were the seven names to back the truck up for?

We certainly didn't want to trade Apple and Nvidia – the Club's two 'own it, don't trade it' stocks – as so many did. No, what got to me was a chartist saying that Nvidia's stock had the worst technical shape of any stock in the entire market. Our trades and decisions on stock ratings were driven more by earnings, company-specific developments and portfolio management rather than any broad commentary on the market. The stock soared more than 5% on the news, adding to those gains throughout the rest of the week. Estee Lauder's new "Profit Recovery Plan" provided little comfort because it's not expected to kick in until the company's fiscal years 2025 and 2026. Club stocks in November Following up on Wednesday's screen of October outperformers , we analyzed our portfolio using FactSet data to see how it fared recently during the historically strongest month of November. All but two of our stocks — Salesforce (CRM) and Coterra Energy (CTRA) — have had a positive average November performance since 2013. The only monthly decline came in November 2021, when the S & P 500 fell 0.83%. Coterra and Salesforce are the worst-performing Club stocks over the past 10 Novembers.

We're exiting our position in Veralto (VLTO), selling 173 shares at roughly $69 each. Following Thursday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will no longer own a position in VLTO. Veralto , the water and packaging quality company, has some interesting long-term prospects as a standalone company that may be worth revisiting down the road. However, Veralto is currently experiencing headwinds due to weakness in China for water quality and lower demand for consumer packaged goods. More specifically, Veralto's water quality sales in China in the third quarter fell in the high teens on a percentage basis.

Facing the threat of bankruptcy, weight-loss startup Calibrate was forced to make a tough deal with private equity firm Madryn Asset Management, according to company documents reviewed by Insider. Under the terms of the deal, Madryn took a 70% stake in Calibrate in exchange for just $20 million, the documents show. Calibrate, Madryn, Kenyon, and the company's VC backers didn't immediately return messages seeking comment for this story. Some longtime patients have regained much of the weight they lost after Calibrate failed to get them medications, Insider reported on Thursday. Under the deal, Madryn exchanged $20 million of its loans for senior equity in Calibrate.

Waystar IPO Delayed Until December or 2024

Waystar provides large healthcare providers with payments software. Photo: AlamyOne of the last big IPOs of the year just got delayed as the short-lived rebound in the new-issue market unravels. Waystar was set to launch its roadshow to pitch investors this week, but now is not expected to do so until December at the earliest, people familiar with the matter said. The healthcare-payments company, which at one point was expected to fetch a valuation in the high-single-digit billions, will likely wait until 2024, some of the people said.

Shares of GE HealthCare surged roughly 5% Tuesday, to more than $66 apiece. Looking ahead to next year, our thesis is unchanged: GE HealthCare should be one of the big winners from recent advancements in Alzheimer's treatments. Last week, GE HealthCare's Dutch peer Phillips (PHG) said its orders fell 9% in the third quarter, marking its fifth-straight quarter of declines. The wide gap in orders between the two companies suggests to us that GE HealthCare is taking market share in the industry. Guidance GE HealthCare reaffirmed most of its 2023 outlook Tuesday.

Morning Bid: Refunding relief stokes bond-led bounce

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 23, 2023. But relief in Treasuries, the villain of the piece for several weeks, is probably the most significant marker for the remainder of the year. And there were further soothing noises for world bonds, even if not for global growth, from surprisingly weak Chinese business surveys for October. Overall, the picture pointed to another positive day for Wall Street stocks, with futures marginally positive ahead of the open as the Fed meeting gets underway. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.

Larger peer Abbott Laboratories (ABT.N) also topped its quarterly profit estimates, aided by a recovery in sales of its medical devices such as heart valves and pacemakers. In the previous quarter, GE HealthCare had said that Alzheimer's-related testing would help drive demand for its imaging equipment at hospitals and medical centers next year. $2.64 billion of the sales came from imaging devices, in line with estimates. The Federal Reserve meeting and October jobs report are on the docket next week as investors wrap up a brutal month for markets. Both the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite slid into correction territory this week following some disappointing megacap tech reports. West’s latest China corporate risk: medical graft

An employee wearing a face mask is seen at a workshop of computed tomography (CT) scanners of medical device firm Siemens Healthineers in Shanghai, China, February 24, 2020. REUTERS/Aly Song Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 23 (Reuters Breakingviews) - China corporate risk has spread to Western medical device companies. According to BMI analysts, about two-thirds of Chinese medical devices used by local hospitals and clinics are imported from Western groups. That implies a direct hit to the order and revenue growth for medical device firms. Domestic brands, which have historically lagged in the advanced end of the medical device market, took the whole of last decade just to hike their share from around 20% to 30%, Deloitte says.

The S & P 500 closed at its bear market low a year ago Thursday — ending Oct. 12, 2022, at its lowest close since November 2020 . In hindsight, that dramatic turnaround was the start of a rally that saw the S & P 500 climb 22% from the close on Oct. 12, 2022, through Wednesday. Palo Alto Networks, meanwhile, has successfully pivoted to profitability, joining the S & P 500 as a result, and repeatedly demonstrated the quality of its cybersecurity platform. Indeed, an exchange-traded fund that gives each S & P 500 constituent the same influence — the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF — has advanced only 11.2% since Oct. 12, 2022. Viewed through the top-heavy rally lens, though, it's not a surprise to see a number of Club stocks underperforming the S & P 500.
