In the wake of last month's E. coli outbreak tied to McDonald's slivered onions, the fast food giant said it will invest over $100 million to boost restaurant sales and speed up the recovery at impacted franchisees. Of that total, $65 million will be invested into supporting owners who have lost business, targeting those in the hardest-hit states. Approximately $35 million will be invested traffic-driving programs, including marketing efforts, according to a memo to owners and employees viewed by CNBC. McDonald's will also be driving "local recovery plans for highly impacted markets" with more details to come in the weeks ahead, the memo said.

New York CNN —McDonald’s is spending $100 million on marketing and to help franchises most heavily affected by a recent E. coli outbreak that has sickened more than 100 people and damaged sales. In a memo sent to employees and obtained by CNN, McDonald’s is spending $35 million on marketing, which includes a value deal focused on its chicken nuggets, plus $65 million directed toward franchisees that have lost business in states where the outbreak happened. Visits and sales took a nosedive in October after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said that fresh slivered onions served on the Quarter Pounders were the likely source of an E. coli outbreak. More than 100 people got sick across 14 states and several lawsuits have been filed against the chain. McDonald’s has said recent tests showed no E. coli in its food, and in the memo noted its Quarter Pounder burgers topped with slivered onions are now back on menus nationwide.

CNN —Israel’s war conduct in Gaza “is consistent with the characteristics of genocide,” including mass civilian casualties and using starvation as a weapon, according to a new United Nations Special Committee report released Thursday. Taco Bell CEO Sean Tresvant credits his leadership success, at least partially, to one piece of advice: "Don't try to be a black belt in everything." "Be a black belt in marketing, and be a brown belt in everything else," Tresvant, who previously held marketing executive roles at Taco Bell, Nike and Sports Illustrated, told LinkedIn's "This is Working" podcast last week. Tresvant received that advice in January upon becoming CEO of Taco Bell — which is owned by fast food giant Yum! Instead of believing he has all the answers, he tries to ask the "right questions" to team members who have expertise that he doesn't, he noted. "I understand I'm not a CFO, but I have a great CFO who can lead the [financial side of the] business."

Even with vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tapped to potentially lead the Department of Health and Human Services, CNBC's Jim Cramer said drug and junk food industries aren't necessarily headed for ruin. "Ultimately, if RFK dons jackboots and demands that we don't have vaccines or eat junk food, it probably won't matter," he said. At the same time, Cramer added, Kennedy has taken a hard stance against processed food. Many drug and processed food stocks have already shouldered heavy losses since Trump named Kennedy, including Eli Lilly , Bristol-Myers , Moderna , PepsiCo , J.M. Plus, he continued, drug and junk food stocks aren't particularly good investments during a rate-cutting cycle.

Extra virgin olive oil prices in Spain's Andalusia stood at 6 euros ($6.33) per kilogram as of Nov. 6, according to Expana, an agricultural and food-focused market intelligence firm. Deoleo said olive oil prices should fall to around 5 euros per liter, a steep drop from highs of 9 to 10 euros, which had become the norm in Spanish supermarkets this year.

In 2023, Americans spent about $17.7 billion on out-of-home cold coffee including iced coffee, cold brew and frozen coffee drinks. Giants like Starbucks have played a major role in iced drinks taking share from more traditional hot coffee. 45% of coffee drinkers ages 18 to 24 said they had a cold coffee in the past day according to a survey conducted in July 2024 by the National Coffee Association. Cold coffee drinks are highly customizable, with syrups, toppings and cold foam incorporated into many of the popular offerings at major coffeehouse chains.
