Huw Edwards, who left the BBC in April after many years leading the British national broadcaster’s coverage of major events, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to three counts of making indecent images of children. Mr. Edwards, 62, is charged with sharing illegal images on WhatsApp. The guilty plea caps a stunning fall for the television anchor, who presented the BBC’s flagship 10 p.m. newscast and was a familiar face in many British households. In 2022, he announced to the nation that Queen Elizabeth II had died, and he presided over coverage of her funeral and the subsequent coronation of King Charles III. This is a developing story.

Toby Melville | ReutersFARNBOROUGH, England — Massive airplane orders, hundreds deep in recent years, were absent from this year's biggest air show. One standout was Air Korea's order for up to 50 Boeing wide-body planes, including the 777X, which Boeing is working toward getting certified by regulators. As both manufacturers grapple with production strains, Air Korea CEO Walter Cho quipped during the Boeing order signing: "Whichever comes first will become our flagship, whoever's on time." Boeing has an overall backlog of close to 5,500 planes, while Airbus has more than 8,000 on order. Many airlines from United Airlines to Air India have also stocked up on new jet orders as travel rebounded in the pandemic.

Italy's Meloni vows to 'relaunch' cooperation with China

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni vowed on Sunday to "relaunch" cooperation with China, signing a three-year action plan during her first official visit to Beijing since taking office. The Italian leader said her five-day trip was a "demonstration of the will to begin a new phase, to relaunch our bilateral cooperation." Later in the day Meloni said that an industrial cooperation memorandum signed by Italy and China includes strategic industrial sectors such as electric mobility and renewables. Meloni, who sees Chinese investment as a way to spur Italy's anemic economic growth, will meet Xi and China's top legislator, Zhao Leji, third in the leadership hierarchy. Meloni is expected to raise Chinese overcapacity with Chinese officials, as well as Chinese economic support for Russia in its war with Ukraine.

“This would rank among the top 10 openings of all-time and marks the sixth-highest Friday ever reported at the box office,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. An over-performing box office makes a comebackAlthough the summer box office was off to a sputtering start after a tepid spring, there have been several blockbusters invigorating the industry. But less than three weeks after its release, the year-over-year domestic box office revenue deficit shrunk from 27% to 19%. Now, the deficit stands at 16.9% and it could keep shrinking depending on how “Deadpool & Wolverine” performs. Although analysts are predicting a more lukewarm total for 2024, the successful summer movie slate is positioning the industry to further close the gap.

If you ask Zaslav, though, the reason Roberts and other potential buyers of media assets aren't interested is because the government has scared them away. Or, perhaps, legacy media companies are simply undesirable assets to own. He extended the life of his previous company, Discovery Communications — and probably his own tenure running a media company — by merging it with AT&T's WarnerMedia in 2022. Without a deal, Discovery would have wallowed as a subscale content provider and owner of declining cable networks. CEO Jim Farley told investors in an earnings call on Wednesday that when it comes to EVs, bigger is not always better — and said that the company's future would depend on its ability to build smaller, cheaper electric vehicles. Advertisement"In ICE [Internal Combustion Engine], a business we've been in for 120 years, the bigger the vehicle, the higher the margin," Farley said. The company continues to lose money on its electric vehicle business amid an industry-wide slowdown in demand for EVs. Ford has quietly created a secretive "skunkworks" team, reportedly based in California, to build this new platform. "We have to start to get back in love with smaller vehicles.

Toumani Diabaté, a virtuoso of the kora, a 21-stringed West African instrument, which he often put into dialogue with other musical traditions from around the globe, died on Friday in Bamako, Mali. His death, in a hospital, was caused by kidney failure, said his manager, Saul Presa. Born in Mali to a line of griots, or traditional West African musician-historians, that he traced back more than 70 generations, Mr. Diabaté was devoted to celebrating the heritage of Mandé-speaking peoples throughout West Africa, and to sharing that history with the world. “If you think of West Africa as a body, then the griot is the blood,” he told The New York Times in 2006. “We are the guardians of West Africa’s society.

Nvidia is working on a version of its new flagship AI chips for the China market that would be compatible with current U.S. export controls, four sources familiar with the matter said. The AI chip giant in March unveiled its "Blackwell" chip series, which is due to be mass-produced later in the year. A version of a chip from Nvidia's Blackwell series for the Chinese market would boost the U.S. firm's efforts to fend off those challenges. Expectations are high that the U.S. will continue to keep up the pressure on semiconductor-related export controls. The U.S. wants the Netherlands and Japan to further restrict chipmaking equipment to China, sources have said.
