What’s going to stop that?” said Jon Loffi, a longtime law enforcement officer who teaches aviation security at Oklahoma State University and wrote a paper on identifying insider threats. The Federal Aviation Administration says its approved medical examiners are trained to gauge a pilot's mental health. The Horizon close call could result in the re-examination of the practice of letting off-duty pilots or other airline employees sit in the cockpit jump seat. Security experts say it would be difficult if not impossible to stop every determined criminal or terrorist who targets aviation. Investigators said Friday they found hydraulic fluid leaking from a hose in the landing gear system of a FedEx plane that was forced to make an emergency landing this month in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The National Transportation Safety Board said that investigators also found a “discontinuity” in the wiring of an alternate system for lowering the landing gear. After getting an alert about the landing gear, the pilots declared an emergency. They did a low fly-by that allowed people in the airport tower to confirm that the left landing gear was not extended. The NTSB said an examination showed that a hose tied to a component used to activate the landing gear was leaking hydraulic fluid.

When her husband, a UPS truck driver, nearly died from heatstroke, Theresa Klenk stepped in to help workers negotiate for air conditioning in all UPS trucks. At the time, she said, no UPS drivers wanted to speak up about the increasingly brutal conditions for fear of being reprimanded. According to UPS, drivers stop on average every three minutes — barely enough time for air-conditioning to make a dent. This year’s record heat caused dozens of deaths, filled some hospitals to pandemic levels and prompted government warnings about avoiding extended exposure to heat. It was a bittersweet victory for Jim and Theresa Klenk.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day recognizes the contributions and legacy of those who lived here long before Christopher Columbus erroneously claimed to have discovered America. President Joe Biden formally recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021 by signing a proclamation stating that federal policies “systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures.”Some states officially celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and others commemorate it through proclamations. Uber will now do your returns for you

New York CNN —Uber is looking to help with a much-dreaded chore: returning packages. Uber’s newest tool aimed at tackling the problem is part of Uber Connect, the company’s existing service that lets users send items for day-of local delivery. With just a tap of the button in either Uber or Uber Eats, customers can now call a courier to collect as many as five pre-paid, sealed packages to be driven to the nearest needed shipping venue, be it a post office or a location for another shipper. Packages sent via Uber must be valued at under $100 and weigh in at under 30 pounds, according to the company. All packages will be returned for a flat fee of $5, the company said, though Uber One members get a discount as part of their subscription benefits.

Uber announced Wednesday it's now offering return package shipping through mail carriers through its Uber and Uber Eats apps. Drivers will pick up the packages and drop them off at UPS, FedEx or USPS. Packages that are shipped through Uber Connect must be prepaid, sealed and ready to be shipped. Customers will also be able to follow their packages with live tracking in the Uber app, which will include a photo of the receipt once the delivery has been completed. In addition to the flat fee, standard tipping options are available for package deliveries.

Uber is adding a new task to its list of services: mailing consumers' return packages. Uber will charge a flat fee of $5 for the service or $3 for its Uber One members. While the service is expected to be used primarily to return packages, Uber drivers will also mail new packages that are sealed and have prepaid labels. Much of that volume involves delivery to businesses that do not return packages often, Jindel said, and he believes many people will continue to return packages themselves, rather than pay Uber $5 to do it. Yet Jindel estimates demand for Uber's return package service could be around 574,000 parcels on business days.
