India is 'easily' the fastest growing economy in the world, IMF executive director Krishnamurthy Subramanian said, as the country's third-quarter GDP growth blew past analysts' estimates. At 8.4%, India's economy expanded at its fastest pace in six quarters, data showed late on Thursday, strong private consumption and upbeat manufacturing and construction activity. Reuters estimates had pegged growth in the October to December period at 6.6%. The Indian government also raised its GDP growth outlook for fiscal year 2023-24 to 7.6% from 7.3% forecast earlier. Subramanian said that growth in India's economy was driven by a shift in the government's focus towards higher capital expenditure, which has increased significantly over the last few years.

Jim Cramer explains why the market rallied on Thursday

CNBC's Jim Cramer told investors why he thinks the market was able to rally on Thursday, citing continued momentum in the tech sector and new inflation data suggesting the economy might be amenable to interest rate cuts. The Nasdaq Composite advanced to its first record high since 2021, popping 0.9% as tech and chip stocks saw gains. Salesforce also issued a light forecast on Wednesday night, but the stock managed to recover and finished up about 3% on Thursday, bringing up other tech stocks with it, Cramer said. And a "usually tempered" Citi analyst indicated on Thursday he was bullish on semiconductors, which bodes well for AI stocks, according to Cramer. "Now, there were some laggards today, of course, I get that—there were plenty of safety stocks that weren't so safe," Cramer said.

It amounts to US strategic partner New Delhi stepping in to replace crude purchases by Western buyers, reduced by sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the analysis said. The United States led a coalition of countries in late 2022 that agreed to a “price cap,” undertaking not to buy Russian crude above $60 a barrel. Those nations also forbade their shipping companies and insurance firms – key players in global shipping – from facilitating the trade of Russian crude above that price. “The price cap was the real trigger for the creation of the shadow fleet,” said Viktor Katona, head of crude oil analysis at trade research firm Kpler. It will be $150.”India’s complex role in global oil trade is also reflected in the fate of the oil products Russian crude is turned into.

Read previewWhile you don’t need to count calories to lose fat — and it’s not for everyone — calories always count. Weight loss occurs in a calorie deficit, when a person burns more calories than they consume. Registered nutritionist Angela Clucas told Business Insider three common mistakes to avoid when tracking calories, to help you hit your goals. Rather than exercising to burn calories , exercise to build strength, maintain muscle (which aids fat loss), and improve your health and mood, Clucas said. This is problematic because a) you can’t do anything about the food you’ve already consumed, and b) you’ll likely forget some things.

The idea that foreign countries are freeloading off the United States plays well with his base, but Trump either doesn’t understand how NATO works or chooses not to. Meanwhile, in 2014, all NATO countries agreed to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense by this year. Every US president since Barack Obama has pressed NATO countries to reach that expenditure level, but at the time of the agreement, only three NATO countries — the US, United Kingdom and Greece — were doing so. In 2017, NATO European countries and Canada spent around $270 billion on their defense, while the United States spent around $626 billion. No matter how wrong-headed it might be, according to his close advisers Trump seems quite serious about getting out of NATO.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The head of the International Monetary Fund warned the Russian economy is still facing significant head winds despite receiving a recent growth upgrade by the Washington-based institution. Russia's economy has proven to be surprisingly resilient amid waves of Western sanctions in the nearly two years since it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Despite this, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva sees more trouble ahead for the country of roughly 145 million. "What it tells us is that this is a war economy in which the state — which let's remember, had a very sizeable buffer, built over many years of fiscal discipline — is investing in this war economy.

Other economists say Russia is pumping the economy with one-time, unproductive investments that yield limited future benefit. 'NOT ALL GROWTH IS GOOD'The International Monetary Fund expects Russia's economy to grow faster than all G7 economies this year but less than emerging European economies. Military expenditure has supported economic growth of countries at war throughout history. According to Rosstat, Russia's labour productivity index, one of Putin's key national development goals, fell 3.6% year-on-year in 2022, its steepest annual fall since the aftermath of the global financial crisis in 2009. Sitharaman, when asked about what economic issues will define the vote, said "if economic issues are to dominate the election, it would be the recipients of the beneficiaries themselves coming out to say, 'I'm empowered now'."
