Lahaina’s Ficus benghalensis, or banyan fig, burst into flames in the massive wildfire that killed at least 90 people and turned countless buildings into char. Weighed against the horrific loss of lives and the nearly complete destruction of a town, the potential loss of a single, gigantic tree may seem trivial. But this magnificent specimen, believed to have been the largest tree in the Hawaiian Islands, has touched the hearts of many in Hawaii and elsewhere. The fact that the tree is charred but still standing offers us the hope of both the tree and the town’s eventual revival.

It is here that Ugandan running is now thriving, though the region’s talent took time to develop. While Kenya enjoyed relative stability in the decades after it gained independence in 1963, Uganda was at war for much of the 1970s and 1980s. Lawlessness pervaded the Mount Elgon region until the turn of the century: Bandits from neighboring tribes would sweep in at night and conduct raids on cattle, often killing locals in the process. The resettlement process, Kiptala said, was traumatic, but it also helped unlock running talent. Through school, children could access competitions, and by the early 2000s, athletes from the Elgon region were beginning to appear in World Championship and Olympic finals.

And now Musk is floating the idea of having a "noble" debate with Zuckerberg instead of throwing hands. TED curator Chris Anderson proposed having a "cage match DEBATE" between the two billionaires, and Musk seemed game for it. Maye Musk tweeted in June that her son and Zuckerberg should "fight with words only" instead of beating each other up.

GLASGOW, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Emma Finucane became the first British track rider to win the women's sprint gold at the World Championships for 10 years as she beat Germany's Lea Friedrich in the final on Wednesday. The 20-year-old beat two-time world champion Emma Hinze in the semi-final round and then proved too strong for Friedrich in the gold-medal ride, winning 2-0. But in Welsh rider Finucane they have unearthed a new force in women's sprinting just a year out from the Paris Olympics. "I get the feeling we're going to be talking about Emma Finucane for a very long time," Britain's former world champion Chris Boardman, commentating for the BBC, said. Finucane was beaten to gold by Hinze's Germany in the team sprint alongside Sophie Capewell and Lauren Bell but dominated a high-class field in the individual event.
