French lawmakers prepared to elect the president of the National Assembly on Thursday, in a vote seen as a test of the power balances between the country’s political forces and as a potential indicator of the direction any new government would take. The gathering of the Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, was its first since no party gained an outright majority in the second round of a snap election on July 7. It was unclear which political force the new president of the Assembly would emerge from. The president of the National Assembly does not have executive powers, but this election could mark the emergence of a majority, even if not an absolute one, that could weigh on President Emmanuel Macron’s choice of the next prime minister. In Paris on Wednesday at the National Assembly, its neoclassical portico decorated with colorful Olympic statues as the city prepares to host the games, lawmakers engaged in frantic negotiations and projections.

In today's big story, we're looking at why reports of more potential trade restrictions have chip companies on their heels . Trade restrictions are certainly real concerns for chip companies. A midsummer City Council meeting in New York can often be a sleepy event, but the gathering on Thursday was a clear exception. Everyone, after all, was still talking about the Bite. A day earlier, Susan Zhuang, a first-year Democratic councilwoman from Brooklyn who ran on a law-and-order message, was charged with assault after the police said she had bitten an officer at a protest over a proposed homeless shelter. So, as the Council convened its so-called stated meeting, the formal gathering during which bills are introduced or passed, Ms. Zhuang drew much of the attention — and she wasn’t even there. She held her own news conference near the scene of her alleged crime in Brooklyn, although a police photo of the bloody circular gash on the officer’s arm put Ms. Zhuang more in the position of explaining the confrontation than denying it.

Hong Kong CNN —A Wall Street Journal reporter in Hong Kong said she was fired after being elected to lead a press union that has come under attack by Beijing amid a national security crackdown. Selina Cheng, who was elected chair of the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA) on June 22, said in a statement posted Wednesday on X that she had been terminated from her job covering China’s car sector earlier in the day. Both Hong Kong officials and Beijing state media have accused it of siding with protesters during the anti-government demonstrations in 2019, a charge the association has denied. But critics have increasingly bemoaned the territory’s shrinking press freedoms since Beijing imposed a national security on Hong Kong after the 2019 protests. “The Wall Street Journal has been and continues to be a fierce and vocal advocate for press freedom in Hong Kong and around the world,” he said.

In a luxury apartment in Trump World Tower in Manhattan near the United Nations, a group of two dozen or so lawyers and civic leaders gathered this spring at the home of Mitchell Draizin, a financier and prominent Democratic donor. The group, he said, was searching for a candidate to defeat Mayor Eric Adams, “somebody to manage and have the city progress.” And for that evening, Scott Stringer, the city’s former comptroller, had their ear. “He’s obviously not the most charismatic person. Perhaps Adams is charismatic, but look where it got us,” Mr. Draizin said in an interview. “Look at the M.T.A., look at the garbage, look at the shoplifting and the migrant crisis.”Similar scenes are playing out across the city, with Democratic supporters being courted by Mr. Adams, Mr. Stringer and others interested in running in next June’s mayoral primary.

Few would envy the task of competing against market leader Nvidia, which has between 70% and 90% market share, according to Mizuho Securities. Still, Nvidia gets most of the hype — and the revenue. Though the company will not confirm it, The Information reported last month that Cerebras has confidentially filed for an IPO. Still, Feldman expects that even consumer-directed AI models will grow larger, and larger models need faster chips. Competing with that mindshare is an uphill battle as Nvidia faces more competition and goes on defense.

Known for its picturesque and well-preserved traditional Korean houses called “hanok,” Bukchon Hanok Village is one of Seoul’s most popular tourist hot spots – attracting thousands of visitors every day. But tourists greatly outnumber residents and complaints about noise, littering and privacy issues in the vicinity have escalated over the years. Located in the Jongno district in downtown Seoul, Bukchon sits near other cultural landmarks like the Jongmyo royal ancestral shrine and the grand Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces. In a bid to ease tensions and control crowds, district officials will start to restrict tourist access to the popular village from as early as October this year.
