Rose Tarlow, 80, interior designer: “Inside Design” by Michael Greer (1962)Back when I was a student at New York’s School of Interior Design, I attended lectures by prominent talents of the day, including the design maestro Michael Greer, who helped decorate rooms in the White House during the [Dwight D.] Eisenhower and [John F.] Kennedy administrations. Greer’s lectures were my favorite — he kept all of us enthralled with his outlandish dictates. Although these days “Inside Design” may be considered rather old-fashioned, it still makes me smile. Mackintosh is one of our heroes, an architect but also an interior designer and watercolorist who oscillated between the world stage and the tight-knit creative community of Glasgow. It can’t be comfortable, but why bother with comfort when you’re designing a chair so striking?

PARIS (AP) — An air of surrealism enveloped Chanel’s Spring Couture show Tuesday as celebrity guests including Naomi Campbell and Kendrick Lamar faced a navigational challenge: walking past a towering pair of open metal scissors. Here are some highlights of Tuesday’s spring couture shows:BUTTONS AND BALLETThe button is a humble icon, but it was not always so. Viard used the button-jewels as a spice for the drama of the ballet stage, scattering them across contrasting and often segmented silhouettes. The house was keenly aware of its history: 2024 marks a century since Coco Chanel first ventured into ballet design. In a world that often seeks the innovative, Mabille reminds us of the enduring allure of classic couture.

I’m gutted to see Condé Nast folding the online music magazine Pitchfork into GQ. I won’t try to improve on the eulogies written for the site already (Casey Newton and Eric Harvey have good ones). It’s one of the few corners of the internet I still love, no matter how often I find myself in disagreement. I’ve seen some thoughtful writing already on why Pitchfork couldn’t make it. In this case, they’re specific to Pitchfork’s editorial choices and market position.

Read previewThe push by US businesses to make more stuff in America has an ongoing challenge: It's hard to find workers. Ulbrich says this stands in sharp contrast to Mexico, whose growing manufacturing base could entice companies to make supply chain investments there, rather than in the US. Even as the pandemic-era labor shortage has eased, the demand for construction and factory workers has continued to exceed supply. Mexico's median age is roughly 30, he added — compared to nearly 40 in China — which has contributed to a strong labor supply. Compared to Mexico, manufacturing in the US would likely offer businesses reduced supply chain disruptions and lower transportation costs.

CNN —For many in Denmark, Queen Margrethe II is the only monarch they’ve ever known. But on Sunday, a new era will get underway when she hands over to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. This means that she will be able to perform duties as head of state when both King Frederik or Crown Prince Christian are not able, such as if they were overseas. King Frederik X will rule alongside his Australian-born and hugely popular wife, Queen Mary – which will undoubtedly delight her proud admirers back home. “The story of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is one Australians have followed closely and hold dear to their hearts,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

The strikes risk further fanning the flames of a wider regionaI conflict that neither the US nor the Houthis’ backers in Iran appear to want. Houthi rebels launched a series of attacks on commercial ships and Western military vessels in the Red Sea, a major artery for international trade. Nadal Prepares His Comeback. But Can He Be Rafa Again?

The strangest year of Rafael Nadal’s career—the one where he played no competitive tennis for the first time since childhood—is about to come to an end. The 22-time major tournament winner is planning to return from injury for one last lap around the pro circuit next month in Australia before he says farewell to the game. But after 12 months away and a painstaking process to rehabilitate nearly every part of his body, even Nadal isn’t sure what to expect. In an ideal world, he would find his feet again, round into form for the clay-court season, delight his fans at the French Open, and possibly sign off with Olympic gold at Paris 2024, when the tournament will be held on the red courts at Roland-Garros that became his living room.

‘Jaja’s African Hair Braiding’Even if the hairstyles in this play weren’t as fabulous as they were, Jocelyn Bioh’s “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” about a day in the life of African immigrants working in a Harlem hair-braiding shop, would still be a sparkling Broadway delight. THERE’S NO PARTY I love more than a holiday party. A fabulous frock, a little lippy, something special to sip on. But this year, instead of shots and Champagne towers (which I adore), I’m craving something more relaxed.
