Still, there was an acculturation process — particularly for Mr. Feldman, who is not really the dance-like-no-one-is-watching type. To begin with, Ms. Allison was immersed in a scene, centered on Burning Man, about which Mr. Feldman knew nothing. “Many of Julia’s friends have jobs I didn’t know existed until I met Julia,” Mr. Feldman said. “To say Noah was having trepidation about Burning Man would be a major understatement,” Ms. Allison said. Over a holiday weekend dedicated to labor, this year’s Telluride Film Festival attendees couldn’t help being reminded of striking workers: the members of SAG-AFTRA, the television and film actors’ union currently in a standoff with the Hollywood studios. Vivid, intimate or both, the variety and quality of these performances made awards talk unavoidable. (Bill Pence and Luddy died after long illnesses in the last year.) Jimmy Buffett’s life evokes images of boozy chill-outs by the beach and a certain carefree calm, but in 1996 the singer’s seaplane came under a hail of gunfire in a dramatic encounter with the Jamaican authorities that inspired a song. Buffett’s song “Jamaica Mistaica” is a laid-back account of a dramatic near-death experience in which his plane, Hemisphere Dancer, was mistaken by the Jamaican authorities for a drug-smuggling aircraft. “We flew the plane in, got off, and as the plane took off to go get fuel, we were surrounded by a Jamaican S.W.A.T. team,” Buffett said in a 1996 Rolling Stone interview. “I thought it was a joke until I heard the gunfire.”

[1/2] Members of Deaf Can Dance team pose after their performance at a dance concert in Ibadan, Nigeria August 6, 2023. Public performances by deaf artists are rare in Nigeria, where there is little provision for people with disabilities to access cultural and artistic activities. Otunuyi and others in the group credit James with helping them express rhythm and flow during rigorous training sessions. "Some may think it is just a waste of energy, a waste of time," Otunuyi signed. "We are trying to break the biases, the prejudices against deaf people," he said.

The poll found adults who regularly say hello to multiple people in their neighborhood have higher well-being than those who speak to few or no neighbors. Numbers mattered: With 100 being a perfect score, well-being rose from 51.5 among people saying howdy to no neighbors to over 64 for people who regularly greeted six neighbors. “If you have very strong community well-being, that’s going to increase the chances that you’ll say hello to neighbors and saying hello to neighbors is going to improve your community well-being.”Career well-being measured a person’s sense of satisfaction, which Witters explained included whether someone was a good fit and utilizing their strengths. The chance of being considered thriving was only 38.1% for people who didn’t say hello, rising to a 60.5% chance among those who greet five neighbors, the survey found. Saying hello boosts the feeling of thriving, or loving the life you live, the survey found.

The 17-year-old charged with murder as a hate crime in the fatal stabbing last month of a gay Black dancer at a Brooklyn gas station pleaded not guilty at an arraignment on Friday. Too Short’s Long (and Very Raunchy) Life in Rap
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( Tom Breihan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
It’s a lesson rap has never forgotten — and only one among many it learned, in large part, from this rapper. To understand Too Short’s influence, it’s useful to consider that he found national success at a moment when rap still seemed like it might head in a very different direction. As his records crept across the country, another Oakland rapper took off like a rocket. MC Hammer was Too Short’s opposite: glitzy, energetic and so family-friendly that he had his own Saturday-morning cartoon. This failure didn’t bother Too Short: “I understand why they didn’t get it,” he says of New Yorkers.

A witness said a group of men that included the teenager charged in the killing used homophobic slurs and told Mr. Sibley that they were Muslim, and he should stop dancing. Mayor Eric Adams and the police held a news conference at which the mayor stressed that the killing was not evidence of Muslim hatred of gay people. Now, it appears the man charged with Mr. Sibley’s murder is not Muslim at all. The suspect, Dmitry Popov, 17, is Christian, his lawyer said, altering at least one aspect of a killing that has drawn national attention. Mr. Sibley’s death had raised concerns about how the charged accusations could hurt relations between two marginalized communities, gay people and Muslims.

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder in the killing of O’Shae Sibley, who was stabbed to death on July 29 after a dispute over his dancing at a Brooklyn gas station. Mr. Sibley, a gay man who was a professional dancer and choreographer, was returning from New Jersey to his home in Brooklyn with four friends that night when the group stopped at a gas station in the Midwood neighborhood, the police said on Saturday. As they filled up their car, they played Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album and began dancing, officials said, at which point a group of men approached and told them to stop. The men yelled homophobic slurs and anti-Black statements at Mr. Sibley, who was Black, and his friends, Mr. Kenny said, all while demanding they stop dancing. Bystanders acted as “peacemakers,” and the men shouting at Mr. Sibley’s group began to disperse, Mr. Kenny said — except for the defendant.

Barbie chose all of her dreams, and through pursuing film as a career, I could too.
