(AP) — Dozens of Missouri Department of Corrections staff members are urging Gov. “We are part of the law enforcement community who believe in law and order,” the group wrote in the letter urging Parson to commute the sentence to life without parole. His scheduled execution on April 9 would be the first in Missouri this year after four were carried out in 2023. Steele said Dorsey has cut hair for prisoners, officers and even Steele, himself. In an 80-page petition filed last month, Megan Crane, an attorney for Dorsey, wrote that her client was denied effective counsel before he pleaded guilty.

BOSTON (AP) — Harvard University has shed fresh light on the ongoing investigation into plagiarism accusations against former president Claudine Gay, including that an independent body recommended a broader review after substantiating some of the complaints. In a letter Friday to a congressional committee, Harvard said it learned of the plagiarism allegations against its first Black female president on Oct. 24 from a New York Post reporter. The school reached out to several authors whom Gay is accused of plagiarizing and none objected to her language, it said. Harvard then appointed the independent body, which focused on two of Gay's articles published in 2012 and 2017. The House committee announced days later that it would investigate the policies and disciplinary procedures at Harvard, MIT and Penn.

New York CNN —Harvard University submitted a trove of documents on Friday to House lawmakers investigating the plagiarism scandal surrounding former President Claudine Gay. Nick Barley, a spokesperson for the House Education and Workforce Committee, told CNN that lawmakers are “currently reviewing” documents related to the plagiarism investigation Harvard sent ahead of a 5 pm ET deadline. The Harvard Crimson previously reported that the university submitted documents to the committee on Friday. But, following the hearing, Gay began to draw widespread criticism over accusations of plagiarism, including multiple instances of missing quotation marks and citations. Notably, the university called those corrections “regrettable,” but found they did not meet the punishable threshold of research misconduct.

"Part of what makes her human is that she makes mistakes, owns them, and apologizes when appropriate," he wrote in a post on X following Business Insider's report on Oxman's plagiarism. That's a starkly different approach from the one he took toward Gay after she stepped down as president earlier this week. At the time, Ackman said she should be fired from Harvard's faculty entirely because of what he called "serious plagiarism issues." However, the instances of Oxman's and Gay's plagiarism have more similarities than differences, according to experts and an internal analysis. "It indicates a bad process to drafting this stuff, and I would say that's true for both Gay and Oxman," he said.

Claudine Gay has spoken out about her reluctant exit from Harvard in a message that appeared to call out critics like Bill Ackman. While Gay does not name those opportunists, one of the most outspoken voices calling for her resignation was billionaire investor Bill Ackman. "In her short tenure as President, Claudine Gay has done more damage to the reputation of Harvard University than any individual in our nearly 500-year history," Ackman wrote in one letter. Gay also addressed the plagiarism accusations, admitting that there was duplicative language in some of her academic writings and "promptly requested corrections" from the journals that published her work. "I have never misrepresented my research findings, nor have I ever claimed credit for the research of others.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Five former correctional officers in West Virginia were indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday in connection with the 2022 death of an incarcerated man who was beaten while handcuffed and restrained in an interview room and later a jail cell. The indictments in West Virginia's southern U.S. District Court come weeks after two different West Virginia corrections officers pleaded guilty to a felony conspiracy charge stemming from the fatal beating of the same inmate, 37-year-old Quantez Burks. The case has drawn scrutiny to conditions and deaths at the Southern Regional Jail. Earlier this month, West Virginia agreed to pay $4 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by inmates who described conditions at the jail as inhumane. Two other former corrections officers were indicted Thursday on a charge of failing to intervene in the unlawful assault, resulting in Burks' death.
