WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Friday that he would "strongly request" that the House Ethics Committee not release a report detailing its investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. “I’m going to request, strongly request, that the Ethics Committee not issue the report.”There is precedent for releasing ethics reports after or on the same day that a lawmaker resigns from Congress. Johnson declined to say whether he spoke to Trump about the Ethics report. Tom Rust, a spokesperson for the Ethics Committee, declined to comment on Johnson's remarks. "There is bipartisan support for the Senate Judiciary Committee having access to this information," Sorbe said.

WASHINGTON — When President Joe Biden relinquishes power in January, some parts of his legacy will be secure, while others may be undone by President-elect Donald Trump and a new Republican-controlled Congress. The pieces of Biden’s legacy go into four buckets. But it will be difficult for Trump to undo bipartisan legislation, such as measures about infrastructure and preventing gun violence, and the judges Biden appointed can’t be unseated. Biden’s immigration orders are ripe for Trump to target after he ran on a platform of mass deportations and clamping down on border security. Bipartisan Biden-era bills (largely safe)The parts of Biden’s legacy that will be relatively safe are the bipartisan laws he passed, which are subject to filibusters and therefore give Democrats the power to protect them.

According to projections from The Associated Press, Republicans flipped control of the Michigan state House, padded their narrow majorities in the New Hampshire state House and Senate, and maintained their majority in the Pennsylvania state Senate. In Arizona, Republicans appeared poised to expand their narrow majorities in the state House and state Senate, though the AP hasn’t yet called enough races to make that determination. In many districts in both states, Democrats had centered their message on the accomplishments the party achieved with that power. Democrats, however, maintained their 102-101 majority in the Pennsylvania state House — the only bright spot for the party in state legislative chambers where partisan control had been at stake. In addition, Republicans’ victories in state legislative races came even as Democratic groups massively outspent them.

But rather than one of the more obvious outdoor wellness and adventure hubs, it’s actually Taiwan. “Several factors have contributed to the rapid growth of outdoor sports in Taiwan,” says Kate Chen of the Taiwan Tourism Administration. “There was a huge spike in young adults wanting to go hiking or cycling.”But it’s not just locals discovering the island’s outdoor opportunities. Floating in the South China Sea between Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, Dongsha Marine National Park offers an entirely different take on outdoor adventure. The monkey, named Jorgie Boy, was taken from his owner, Brandi Botello, on Saturday morning after Dallas police officers responded to a single-vehicle accident. Botello told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that she was charged with DWI but maintained that she was not driving. Botello told the station that the driver was a male acquaintance and that he was charged with public intoxication. Because Botello lives in Irving, a neighboring suburb, the monkey was transferred to Irving's animal control department, Dallas police said. The sanctuary's owner said the monkey would not be returned to its previous owner, the Morning News reported.

Processed food stocks tumbled on Friday as investors feared a crackdown under President-elect Donald Trump and ally Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Cheerios cereal and Betty Crocker cake mix maker General Mills fell more than 2%, as did Conagra Brands , the company behind Reddi-wip. Frozen potato supplier Lamb Weston , whose french fries are sold in chains including McDonald's and Chick-fil-A, dropped more than 6%. Traders are wary that Kennedy's "Make America Healthy Again" focus will result in increased scrutiny of companies behind some of the best-known snack, packaged food and soft-drink brands. Giuliani also told his bank to turn over at least $30,000 in a bank account, according to a Friday court filing. If Giuliani didn’t give up the full list of items ordered by a judge last month, he could be held in contempt of court. Giuliani has indicated in court proceedings one watch is from his grandfather and two others were gifts from European leaders after the September 11, 2001, attacks. The pair are also still fighting in court to try to win his $3.5 million Palm Beach, Florida, condo and four Yankees World Series rings from the 1990s and 2000. There's little appetite on Wall Street for undermining the central bank or ousting Jerome Powell. On Friday, billionaire Elon Musk endorsed a suggestion to let the president control the Federal Reserve, which is run by Chair Jerome Powell. Advertisement"He seems to be someone who has the ear of the president," Mark Spindel, an investment manager who co-wrote a history of Fed independence, told Business Insider of Musk's influence. Many Wall Streeters are concerned that undermining Fed independence would undercut investors' faith in the stock and bond markets. Trump is, Siegel said, extremely attuned to the stock market and uses it as a barometer of his success.

Super Micro could also get an extension from the Nasdaq, giving it months to come into compliance. Even with vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tapped to potentially lead the Department of Health and Human Services, CNBC's Jim Cramer said drug and junk food industries aren't necessarily headed for ruin. "Ultimately, if RFK dons jackboots and demands that we don't have vaccines or eat junk food, it probably won't matter," he said. At the same time, Cramer added, Kennedy has taken a hard stance against processed food. Many drug and processed food stocks have already shouldered heavy losses since Trump named Kennedy, including Eli Lilly , Bristol-Myers , Moderna , PepsiCo , J.M. Plus, he continued, drug and junk food stocks aren't particularly good investments during a rate-cutting cycle.

A Quarter Pounder with cheese, fries and a drink arranged at a McDonald's restaurant in El Sobrante, California, on Oct. 23, 2024. In the wake of last month's E. coli outbreak tied to McDonald's slivered onions, the fast food giant said it will invest over $100 million to boost restaurant sales and speed up the recovery at impacted franchisees. Of that total, $65 million will be invested into supporting owners who have lost business, targeting those in the hardest-hit states. Approximately $35 million will be invested traffic-driving programs, including marketing efforts, according to a memo to owners and employees viewed by CNBC. McDonald's will also be driving "local recovery plans for highly impacted markets" with more details to come in the weeks ahead, the memo said.

They could feasibly tap their savings and investments to wipe out their credit card debt almost immediately. Yet they also owe $40,000 in credit card debt, they told self-made millionaire and money expert Ramit Sethi on a recent episode of his "Money for Couples" podcast. Even high earners can find themselves under a mountain of credit card debt if they let their spending go unchecked. New York CNN —McDonald’s is spending $100 million on marketing and to help franchises most heavily affected by a recent E. coli outbreak that has sickened more than 100 people and damaged sales. In a memo sent to employees and obtained by CNN, McDonald’s is spending $35 million on marketing, which includes a value deal focused on its chicken nuggets, plus $65 million directed toward franchisees that have lost business in states where the outbreak happened. Visits and sales took a nosedive in October after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said that fresh slivered onions served on the Quarter Pounders were the likely source of an E. coli outbreak. More than 100 people got sick across 14 states and several lawsuits have been filed against the chain. McDonald’s has said recent tests showed no E. coli in its food, and in the memo noted its Quarter Pounder burgers topped with slivered onions are now back on menus nationwide.
