CNN —An elderly man narrowly escaped with his life after a harrowing attack by a bear and her three cubs in his own home. “It’s certainly lucky we didn’t have a fatality,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer Lucas Martin said. Dating back to 1960, there have been 96 reported bear attacks on humans in the state. Experts urge different approaches during bear attacks: If a grizzly or brown bear charges, play dead, the National Park Service said. But if black bears – like the ones who entered the elderly man’s home – charge and attack, the park service warns to “fight with everything you have.”“Do not play dead.”

With just weeks left before the November election, former President Donald Trump has taken to promoting items and businesses that are not at all connected to his presidential campaign. “You’re going to love them,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform last week of his new line of branded watches, which cost anywhere from $499 to $100,000. “Would make a great Christmas gift.”While running for president this cycle, Trump has also promoted a sneaker brand, boots and even Bibles — all of which are business and not campaign ventures. CNN —Megan Rathmell thought she’d bombed her job interview earlier this year, assuming her nervousness and lack of preparation had cost her the opportunity. SDI Productions/E+/Getty ImagesWhat Rathmell learned from her boss mirrors what hiring managers say: Some Gen Z college graduates are unprepared for job interviews or behave unprofessionally during job interviews. Some people think they can just wing a job interview, said Stacie Haller, chief career advisor at ResumeBuilder. How to handle the actual job interviewDressing professionally for both in-person and virtual interviews is important regardless of whether it’s for a fast-food restaurant, retail store or office job, experts said. The county’s machines had to be replaced afterwards when data, including passwords for the machines, was posted online. "It was her job to protect the election equipment, and she turned on it and used her power for her own advantage." Peters said she was simply trying to preserve information to make sure the election was secure, and asked the judge to sentence her to probation. County officials said Peters' continued fraudulent election claims also led to a slew of death threats against election workers while she traveled the country promoting her claims and ignored her professional duties. She was defeated in the Republican primary and alleged election fraud in that race, demanding a recount after losing by 85,000 votes.

Colorectal cancer cases have been rising in people younger than 50 over the last two decades. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force isn’t the first group to suggest lowering the screening age. The new study found that colorectal cancer screening among 45 to 49-year-olds remains low overall, but increased threefold following the 2021 guideline change. “One of the biggest predictors of whether you get age-appropriate cancer screening is whether or not you have insurance,” Lieu said. Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening, since it can detect not only cancerous tumors, but precancerous polyps that can be removed before they can turn into cancer.

At least 125 places from the West Coast to the Rockies have tied or broken all-time October heat records since the month began. It’s another reminder that extreme heat is no longer confined to the summer as the world warms due to fossil fuel pollution. “If we continue to warm the plant by burning fossil fuels, late-season heat waves like this will become much more common.”California has been at the epicenter of the extreme heat. The record-breaking heat began before the calendar flipped to October. Phoenix could reach two consecutive weeks of record-breaking heat as it remains stuck in it into at least midweek.

Some of the ads feature doctors speaking passionately about abortion and saying that Republican candidates shouldn't represent "us" or "our" communities in Congress. But in at least four instances, House Majority PAC, a super PAC aligned with House Democratic leadership, featured Republican-blasting doctors in their ads who did not live in the district where they were advertising. The path to the House majority runs through all four of the districts where these ads ran. Since then, both doctors and patients have often become key personal messengers on abortion for Democrats. But Republicans blasted House Majority PAC over the ads, calling them misleading and accusing the group of spreading falsehoods about GOP incumbents and candidates.

Jeff Landry confirmed his support on Tuesday of restarting the tradition of bringing Louisiana State University’s live tiger mascot onto the football field ahead of home games. For years, the school’s live mascot would ride through the stadium in a travel trailer “topped by the LSU cheerleaders” before home games, based on information about the mascot on the LSU Athletics’ webpage. Following the death of the school’s tiger, Mike VI, in 2016, LSU announced that future Mike the Tigers would no longer be brought onto the field. In the past, animal rights groups have called on LSU to stop keeping live tiger mascots. Louisiana is not the only school that is home to a live mascot.

This process, known as river piracy, set in motion a chain of geological events that reshaped the landscape, scientists reported Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience. While some instances of river capture and landscape remodeling began millions of years ago, others are happening today, she added. Evidence of one ancient example still exists around the edges of the Himalayas, where long-ago river capture eroded deep gorges. Han’s simulations suggested that river capture would have dramatically increased the flow of water in the Kosi’s lower segments. Compared with river piracy, erosion and uplift unspool over a much longer time span — and are still happening with Everest, Lhotse and Makalu.

AP —John Ashton, the veteran character actor who memorably played the gruff but lovable police detective John Taggart in the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, has died. Ashton died Thursday in Fort Collins, Colorado, his family announced in a statement released by Ashton’s manager, Alan Somers, on Sunday. In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Ashton was a regular face across TV series and films, including “Midnight Run,” “Little Big League” and “Gone Baby Gone.”But in the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, Ashton played an essential part of an indelible trio. Ashton co-starred in all four of the films, beginning with the 1984 original and running through the Netflix reboot, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” released earlier this year. “Bobby started handing me these matches, and I went to grab the matches, and he threw them on the floor and stared at me,” said Ashton.
