Children need to do more physical and practical work at school, and schools need to integrate more movement into students’ routines. Attending Back to School Night at my son’s middle school, I was saddened to see that instruction is done mostly via large screens and that the students have no recess. My grandchildren would love the opportunity to experience the life skills that I was lucky enough to enjoy. And of course she taught sewing and cooking. Today’s students could surely benefit by learning practical life skills like home ec and shop.

In Brooklyn, a Honduran-Inspired Backyard Dinner
  + stars: | 2023-10-25 | by ( Mahira Rivers | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On a warm evening, not long before her guests were set to arrive, Cathleen O’Neil, 30, was stocking the bar for a dinner party at her home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, while her co-host, the chef Feisal Lagos, 39, was hastily adding the finishing touches to his handwritten menu. During the pandemic, they missed the collaborative thrill of hosting and came up with the idea for the Regathering, a dinner series that would allow them to reunite with their circle. Their first meal, in July 2021, was a celebration of the end of social distancing, held in the backyard of O’Neil’s apartment building. “We needed to get out, to see our friends,” said O’Neil. “But we also both take what we do very seriously.” They served an ambitious menu of raw oysters with granita and grilled tilefish.

Policymakers in Washington are now engaged in a wide range of discussions regarding how to prevent AI technology from spinning out of control. Rather than upending the old order, there's a real possibility in this case that disruption will help the big get bigger, with challengers struggling to gain any real traction. In short, AI shouldn't be a vehicle used to ensure that Silicon Valley-based Big Tech can extend its dominance. America has not always remained true to its embrace of bottom-up innovation — and the innovation economy has suffered as a result. This new technology should not be a wedge that further separates the tech world from the rest of America.

New York CNN —Big Tech has given workers an ultimatum: Come back to the office, or find a new job. However, the program risked letting all employees work from home or any other remote location. Intentional office gatheringsAhead of instituting Flex Forward, Autodesk was “rethinking our office footprint,” Blum said. For instance, Autodesk closed its San Rafael, California, office; consolidated it with the San Francisco headquarters; and started subleasing some of its office space. The Global Cooling Pledge – set to be announced at the upcoming United Nations climate summit, COP28 – represents a tough request given the cooling industry is only expected to grow. The emissions from both the refrigerants and the energy used in cooling now account for about 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and are expected to triple by 2050 as temperatures continue to rise. "We need cooling, but it has to become more efficient," UNEP Cool Coalition global coordinator Lily Riahi said. Another 13 commitments outlined in the draft pledge include establishing minimum energy performance standards for air conditioning by 2030, and including cooling emissions in countries' overall climate action plans, called Nationally Determined Contributions. The UNEP estimates that global efforts to tackle cooling emissions could have a significant impact by 2050, avoiding the release of up to 86 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

While I'm confident we will get to a point where virtual workspaces are as engaging, collaborative, and productive as physical spaces, we aren't there yet." Meanwhile, parents and experts say schools neglect students with math disabilities like dyscalculia, which affects up to 7% of the population and often coexists with dyslexia. Learning struggles for some may be due to dyscalculia or other math learning disabilities, yet few teachers report their students have been screened for dyscalculia. Experts say learning the most effective methods for teaching students with math disabilities could strengthen math instruction for all students. Part of the problem is that teachers don’t receive the training needed to work with children with math disabilities. “It’s pretty rare for undergraduate degrees or even master’s degrees to focus on math learning disabilities with any level of breadth, depth, quality or rigor,” said Amelia Malone, director of research and innovation at the National Center for Learning Disabilities.

Brimstone Energy, a California-based startup, is one of several companies trying to reduce the carbon emissions from the production of cement, which accounts for about 8% of global carbon emissions. Unlike limestone, however, the silicate rock contains no CO2, so there are no such emissions associated with the production process. Last July it received certification that its product is essentially the same as Portland cement. Not only does the silicate rock Brimstone uses not emit carbon, it actually absorbs carbon. "Ultimately, our plan, our goal would be to develop a credibly lower-cost process to make Portland cement at scale.

David Baszucki, founder and CEO of Roblox, presents at the Roblox Developer Conference on August 10, 2019 in Burlingame, California. Roblox employees who don't want to work at the gaming company's physical office at least three days a week will need find a job elsewhere. Tuesday's announcement marks an about-face for Roblox, which told employees in May of last year that it was giving "employees the option to either come to the office regularly a few days a week, or to primarily work remotely," coming in for "quarterly get-togethers." Ultimately, however, he said working in an office strengthens the company culture and results in more innovative and productive employees. "A three-hour Group Review in person is much less exhausting than over video and brainstorming sessions are more fluid and creative," Baszucki wrote.

For the first time in a long time, tech workers are in a funk. This rare combination of generous compensation and a reasonable work-life balance kept tech workers happier than employees in other industries. Economy wide, there were on average 6.6 front-line workers per manager in 2018 and 2019, but post-pandemic, the ratio dropped to 6 to 1. It's possible that as tech companies have grown into more complex organizations, more management layers are necessary. Fundamentally, it's about listening to and elevating the voices of front-line employees.

But it’s a looming catastrophe for New Orleans, where officials estimate that tens of thousands of the city’s water pipes are made of lead. Many residents aren’t even aware they have lead pipes supplying their drinking water, said Jessica Dandridge, executive director of the Water Collaborative of Greater New Orleans. Dandridge’s organization works both on water quality issues around the city’s lead pipes and stormwater management and flood control, and they are one of BlueConduit’s local partners working to map the pipes. As a result, lead drinking pipes are all over the country; some national estimates say the total number of pipes is around 9.2 million. 2023's gold rush for Taylor Swift and Beyoncé music should continue to bode well for shares of Spotify Technology , according to Morgan Stanley. Analyst Benjamin Swinburne named the music streaming company a top pick and reiterated his buy rating. Heightened engagement levels and ongoing innovation should fuel further market share gains and help the company hold onto pricing power, he added. In the near term, Swinburne remains confident in the company's ability to retain pricing power and anticipates an acceleration in revenue growth during the fourth quarter. The record-breaking event has sold out stadiums, led to an expensive resale ticket market and heads to theaters this weekend as a concert film that's already broken records, surpassing $100 million in ticket sales .
