MEXICO CITY (AP) — Lawyer Isabel Lazo’s jobs are being systematically canceled by Nicaragua’s increasingly repressive government. Lazo worked at a university before the government of President Daniel Ortega closed it. The couple lives in the northern city of Somoto, where Isabel Lazo now works for a European-backed NGO. Lazo said Thursday she is worried that it's only a matter of time for the group where she now works. She has wanted to emigrate for some time, but she helps her family by giving them some of what little money she earns.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former Ambassador to Poland and longtime Tennessee Republican politician Victor Ashe sued state election officials on Wednesday over a law he claims is so vague that he could be prosecuted for voting in a Republican primary. They argue that Tennessee voters aren't registered by party, and the law does not define what it means to be a bona fide party member, to declare allegiance to a party or long that allegiance must last. The league also worries that volunteers could be subject to a separate law that punishes people who promulgate erroneous voting information. Tennessee voters often decide which primary to participate in based on campaign developments. The lawsuit names Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett, Coordinator of Elections Mark Goins and Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti as defendants.

"Many protesters experienced being part of a civic collective for the first time," said Huang, who fled to Germany in March after narrowly avoiding detention during protests in Shanghai. Reuters was unable to confirm the total number of protesters detained last year, although some were since released. This year, on the weekend anniversary of the protests, there were no demonstrations in Beijing and Shanghai. During last year's Beijing protests, some demonstrators also called for press freedom, democracy and human rights. Some of the protesters that Reuters spoke to, as well as observers, said the events helped raise awareness of how much political power Chinese people actually wielded.

"The point is that there should not be too many politicians in this government," he told state-run news agency PAP. The prime minister has vowed to implement the policy proposals of opposition parties in a bid to persuade them to work with him. When Daniel Skousen scrubs at the ash and soot covering his Maui home, he worries about the smell. Crews have installed air quality monitors throughout town and are spraying a soil sealant to prevent toxic ash from being washed into the ocean or blowing around. The Hawaii Department of Health's Environmental Health Services Division also told Skousen's attorney it had no records about residential testing of contaminants to release. “If it smells like burned plastic or burned electrical cables, then probably those chemicals are in the air and not healthy,” Hertz-Picciotto said. Whether a home can be made safe enough for residency comes down in part to the resident's risk tolerance, Hayes said.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Nicaragua's increasingly isolated and repressive government thought it had scored a rare public relations victory last week when Miss Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios won the Miss Universe competition. Ordinary Nicaraguans — who are largely forbidden to protest or carry the national flag in marches — took advantage of the Saturday night Miss Universe win as a rare opportunity to celebrate in the streets. Palacios' victory — along with photos she posted on Facebook in 2018 of herself participating in the protests — overjoyed Nicaragua's opposition. Thousands have fled into exile since Nicaraguan security forces violently put down mass anti-government protests in 2018. Palacios, who became the first Nicaraguan to win Miss Universe, has not commented on the situation.

I didn’t know where to stand, where I would find the sign-up sheet or quite where to look when I spoke into the small microphone. But it doesn’t take long to fall in line with the rhythms of a municipal meeting. What first took me here was a collective effort to convince the Town Council to prohibit the use of gas-powered leaf blowers. Once, when a contentious meeting went late, someone, perhaps anticipating the rancor, passed out homemade cookies. In ours, the curved dais is the grounding structure of a stage for different players with different roles in making this town work (and not work).

The exodus of workers and businesses during the pandemic left San Francisco a shell of its former self. But there are small signs of a turnaround. WSJ explores whether new civic policies and fresh commercial interest can rejuvenate the city’s downtown. Photo illustration: Rio Roye/WSJBig public companies that rent out single-family homes are beating the rest of the rental market this year, thanks to tenants who are paying large rent increases on the sorts of homes they increasingly can’t afford to buy. Landlords Tricon Residential , Invitation Homes and AMH , which together own about 180,000 rental homes, each posted rent increases greater than 6% for the third quarter over the same period a year prior.

In the 2020 presidential election, Biden won by barely beating Trump in a handful of states. A key reason for his victory was a higher-than-ever turnout from younger voters. Those same voters are now in complete disagreement with how he's handled fighting in Israel. In 2020, Biden just narrowly bested former President Donald Trump by tens of thousands of votes in five separate states, in large part due to young voters turning out in record numbers. If support for Biden amongst younger voters continues to deteriorate, the Democratic incumbent can expect to have an increasingly difficult time in his bid for reelection.

As an artist and climate activist, I've seen firsthand how art is used to slow the climate crisis. His work, titled "The Weather Project," which debuted at the Tate Modern in London in 2003, depicts the dynamic, all-absorbing nature of the weather. Elijah McKenzie-JacksonArt plays a crucial role in making climate action accessible to all by pushing past language barriers and triggering emotions. Through captivating visuals and innovative messaging, companies and nonprofit organizations can generate awareness of the need for climate action and motivate people to take action on various social-justice issues across media platforms. In 2021, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. earned more than $500,000 as the chairman and top lawyer at Children’s Health Defense, the nonprofit organization that he has helped build into a leading spreader of anti-vaccine falsehoods and a platform for launching his independent bid for the White House. The compensation was almost three times as high as the amount paid to the organization’s president, but it was not Mr. Kennedy’s biggest source of income. Neither was his family’s fabled wealth. Throughout his long public life, Mr. Kennedy has cultivated an image as a man committed to a greater good, the blessing and burden of belonging to one of America’s most storied political families. On the trail, Mr. Kennedy has delivered a populist message of anti-corporate rhetoric and debunked science while invoking a powerful lineage: his uncles, former President John F. Kennedy and Senator Ted Kennedy, and his father, Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

"That is, the real number of dead (deceased) in combat and non-combat situations is more than 30,000 people." The Book of Memory project, which has tracked Ukraine's war dead since Russia's first invasion in 2014, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
