The two will form a joint venture that will give Stellantis the exclusive rights to produce, export and sell the Chinese brand’s vehicles outside Greater China. Stellantis will control the joint venture, with a 51% stake, while Leapmotor will take a 49% share. In July, Volkswagen announced it was buying a 5% stake in Chinese EV maker Xpeng and unveiled a strategic partnership to jointly develop new vehicles. News of Stellantis’ latest partnership comes about a year after it terminated its joint venture in China with Guangzhou Automobile Group Company (GAC). Oct 26 (Reuters) - Ford (F.N) autoworkers were set to head back to work after the United Auto Workers (UAW) union reached a tentative labor deal with the company late Wednesday. Ford was the first of Detroit's Big Three car manufacturers to negotiate a settlement to strikes joined by 45,000 workers since mid-September. The UAW will now turn its attention to talks with General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). The UAW told Ford workers now on strike to return to their jobs during the ratification process. That means production of Ford Super Duty pickups, Ford Bronco and Explorer SUVs and Ranger trucks could restart this week.

BANGKOK (AP) — Stellantis plans to invest about 1.5 billion euros, or about $1.6 billion, in Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, the companies said late Wednesday. The European-based maker of Jeep and Ram and Leapmotor said in a joint statement that they have formed a strategic partnership and joint venture that aims to expand the Chinese EV maker’s sales both inside and outside of China. Stellantis said it expects to benefit from Leapmotor’s “tech-first EV ecosystem” in China to meet its own targets for shifting to electric vehicles. The companies said the 51% Stellantis-led joint venture will have exclusive rights to export and sell Leapmotor’s vehicles outside China. Leapmotor has focused on the mid- to high-end of the EV market in China, selling 111,000 electric vehicles in 2022.

When autoworkers went on strike in September, executives of the large U.S. automakers warned that union demands could significantly undermine their ability to compete in a fast-changing industry. The chief executive of Ford Motor said that the company might have to scrap its investment in electric vehicles. Ford’s cost will rise under the terms of the new contract, which includes a 25 percent raise over four and a half years, improved retirement benefits and other provisions. But analysts said those increases should be manageable. If anything, he said, the deal will help Ford, in part because the four-year contract ensures there will be no labor strife during an intense phase of the transition to electric vehicles.

But the strike at the company isn’t quite over, and there’s no immediate end in sight for the strikes at General Motors and Stellantis. And pay increases will be even greater for some workers who were being paid at a lower pay tier. Generally union members do not return to work when a tentative agreement is reached until after a ratification vote is concluded. The Mack Trucks deal also had double-digit pay hikes of 10% immediately and 20% over the four-year life of that contract. But it didn’t have the COLA or some of the other gains the union achieved in the deal at Ford.

(AP) — Throughout its 5-week-old strikes against Detroit’s automakers, the United Auto Workers union has cast an emphatically combative stance, reflecting the style of its pugnacious leader, Shawn Fain. Officials at all three companies note that they have sweetened pay offers and offered numerous other concessions. Fain has even sought 32-hour work weeks for 40 hours of pay — a demand that even many union workers call unrealistic. In a departure from the style of past UAW leaders, Fain has insulted CEOs and publicly revealed the companies' pay offers. Parker, whom Fain tapped to be an assistant, says he feels sure Fain has a plan to end the strike.

☆ U.A.W. Expands Strike to a Ram Plant in Michigan

In a major escalation of its six-week strike at the three large U.S. automakers, the United Automobile Workers union on Monday told 6,800 workers at a large Ram pickup truck plant in Michigan to walk off the job. Union workers at the plant, which is owned by Stellantis, the parent of Ram, Chrysler and Jeep, in Sterling Heights, Mich., joined the strike on Monday morning. The walkout at the Ram plant is the first escalation in the strikes since the U.A.W. called 8,700 workers to leave their jobs at Ford Motor’s largest plant, in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 11. That plant produces the Super Duty version of the company’s popular F-150 truck and the Ford Expedition, a full-size sport-utility vehicle.

The United Auto Workers union has once again escalated its strikes against big Detroit automakers, this time adding a factory that makes Ram pickup trucks for Stellantis. No progress was reported with Ford, which last week said it had the best offer of the three. The union went on strike Sept. 15 at one assembly plant from each company. By taking down the Stellantis factory, the union is signaling Ford and GM to improve their offers, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said. Each time the automakers make an offer, Fain said, they insist it’s the best they can do, only to return days later with a better offer.
