ANNOUNCER:From NBC News in Washington, the longest-running show in television history, this is Meet the Press with Kristen Welker. In a Meet the Press interview during his 2016 run, he suggested that his insurgent bid could generate cross-party appeal. AMY WALTER:Yeah, and the other thing that, you know, Democrats have been dining off the anti-Trump coalition now since 2017. RAMESH PONNURU:I think Democrats wildly overestimated the power of the abortion issue to drive candidate choice as opposed to referendum. There would be pressure on the president, President Biden, to not run for reelection.

“We’re going to be asking everyone who sells drugs, gets caught, to receive the death penalty for their heinous acts,” he added. President Joe Biden had campaigned on passing legislation to eliminate the death penalty at the federal level, but pulled back on that in office. Biden’s aides say he supports death row inmates serving life sentences without probation or parole. Meanwhile, the Justice Department under Biden and Garland has not sought the death penalty in federal cases that could have warranted it, and has even withdrawn death penalty sentences in about two dozen cases that it had inherited. There are currently 40 inmates, all men, on federal death row, according to the nonpartisan Death Penalty Information Center.

Allison Venditti, the founder of Moms at Work, an organization for working moms, said leaving maternity leave early isn't uncommon. "The most important thing, I think, is for people to have choice — choice in how they approach work and family, choice to go back to work early, choice to take more time off," Venditti said. We deserve federally mandated maternity leave; it's truly barbaric that we are one of only six countries without guaranteed paid maternity leave.

A growing group of Chinese travelers are now turning to extreme forms of transportation for their vacations. WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice on Friday charged an Iranian man in a murder-for-hire plot to assassinate then-candidate Donald Trump and two others in a plot to kill an American journalist critical of Tehran. The three who were charged are Farhad Shakeri of Iran; Carlisle Rivera of Brooklyn, New York; and Jonathan Loadholt, of Staten Island, New York. Around Oct. 7, the Iranian official tasked Shakeri with providing a plan within seven days to kill Trump, he told law enforcement in recorded interviews, the complaint says. Shakeri told FBI officials that he didn’t intend to propose a plan to assassinate Trump in the timeframe set by the IRGC, it says. Trump was also briefed by U.S. intelligence officials after the attempt in September about threats from Iran to kill him.

If he wins the election in November, he has pledged to follow a similar course on another contentious policy proposal: ending birthright citizenship. Under Trump’s proposal, at least one parent would need to be a citizen or legal resident for a child to receive birthright citizenship. Trump had pledged to end birthright citizenship when first running for president in 2015 and he raised it again in 2018. Opponents of birthright citizenship say that language means citizenship is denied to anyone whose parents are not legally in the country. Sometimes relevant information could be hard to determine, such as if the immigration status of an absent parent is not known to the other.

Centuries on and it turns out that long-held assumptions about some of the people of Pompeii should not have been set in stone. “Modern assumptions about gendered behaviors may not be reliable lenses through which to view data from the past,” they added. Over the centuries, Pompeii and the dead were forgotten, remaining buried for almost two millennia until a farmer found part of the city beneath a vineyard in 1748. In the 19th century, archaeologists pioneered the technique of pouring plaster into voids left by decomposed bodies, creating lifelike casts. Research at Pompeii continues to reveal new details about the ancient city and its people, with fresh discoveries made all the time.
