CNN —The fortuitous timing of having a series produced by and featuring newly minted Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr. tumbles down a very strange rabbit hole in “The Sympathizer,” a darkly satirical look at the Vietnam War and its aftermath. Each episode begins with dated-looking credits that evoke the 1970s, a promising Quentin Tarantino-ish conceit that, given what follows, sets expectations too high. As constructed, it’s a rather heavy-handed approximation of the fate Vietnam experienced in the pull of the war, which doesn’t make the Captain’s increasingly surreal arc any more compelling. Strangelove,” assuming that was the intent, than a means of maximizing the star’s presence without really heightening its impact. “The Sympathizer” is hardly the first project to funnel the contradictions of the Vietnam War through an exaggerated lens (“Apocalypse Now” being a prime example), but except for a few bracing sequences the execution only clouds that vision.

The series follows an agent referred to only as the Captain (Hoa Xuande), who's half-Vietnamese and half-French. Aligned with North Vietnam, he's embedded within the South Vietnam army. Critics have generally praised the series, particularly Xuande's performance and Park's direction (in addition to showrunning duties, he directs the first three episodes). EPA also set limits for mixtures of two or more PFAS chemicals, because research shows they may have combined health impacts. "The technology is there, especially to clean up drinking water, to filter these compounds out of the water. "For too long, many people across the country have had been drinking contaminated water levels that likely impact health." The Biden administration has a broader $9 billion PFAS strategy that goes beyond drinking water, including military bases, airports, and food packaging.

Read previewAt the start of the year, Elon Musk issued a clear warning about who he thought posed the biggest challenge to Tesla's electric vehicle ambitions: Chinese EV makers. Kyle Chan, a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton, recently drew attention to how Xiaomi's EVs have been made with machines similar to the "giga press" machines Tesla uses in its die-casting process. AdvertisementWhen Tesla entered China, it helped Chinese firm LK Group develop the world’s largest casting machines to make Tesla parts. Later, LK sold similar casting machines to 6 Chinese firms, likely automakers. However, LK's die-casting expertise was no longer limited to Tesla after 2022, as the company was reported to have struck deals with six other Chinese companies to supply casting machines to them.

Rising temperatures are also allowing plants to bloom earlier and longer, prolonging pollen seasons. Increased rainfall means plants release more pollen when they bloom, and higher numbers of thunderstorms cause pollen grains to burst, making them more irritating and worsening symptoms. Shifting wind patterns in some parts of the world are carrying pollen over longer distances, too. Experts think more exposure to pollen equals more chances to be sensitized, which equals more allergies. So someone in Illinois, for example, might be seeing bigger changes in pollen than somebody in Texas – although Texas gets blasted with pollen, too.

American chip giant Intel in December 2021 said it will invest more than $7 billion to build a chip packaging and testing factory in Malaysia, with production expected to begin in 2024. Malaysia holds 13% of the global market for chip packaging, assembly and testing services, said the Malaysian Investment Development Authority in a Feb. 18 report. Exports of semiconductor devices and integrated circuits increased by 0.03% to 387.45 billion Malaysian ringgit ($81.4 billion) in 2023, amid global chip demand weakness. Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association president Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai said many Chinese firms diversified some of their production to Malaysia, calling the country China's "plus one." In the same month, the world's largest contract chip maker TSMC opened its first Japan factory as it diversifies away from Taiwan amid U.S.-China tensions.

Like many other enterprise companies, Symphony was locked into its cloud providers as its tech stack became increasingly entwined with and dependent on the cloud companies' tools and software. Some of that computing power and storage comes from the major cloud providers themselves, by way of consumer devices, but they can also come from a company's own private cloud, Gurle said. On Wall Street, tech execs constantly look for new ways to keep cloud costs in check. This is reaching new heights thanks to the AI craze, with the construction of data centers wreaking havoc on rural communities. Here's the pitch deck Hive used to raise $13 million.

This is the first time Beijing has edged past Washington since 2020 when the annual survey first posed the question. China's aggressive behavior in the South China Sea is the Philippines' (90.2%) and Vietnam's (72.5%) top concern, the region's two frontline South China Sea claimant states. The Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. told Bloomberg last month that his government's claims on certain parts of the South China sea should not be viewed as provoking China. Vietnam has also asserted sovereignty over islands in the South China Sea though Beijing has brushed aside those claims. ASEAN should build up its resilience and unity to fend off pressures from the two major powers, the U.S. and China, nearly half of the survey respondents said.

Voters in Wisconsin approved adding language to the State Constitution on Tuesday that will forbid officials from accepting donations of money or staffing to help run elections, The Associated Press said. They were rooted in complaints raised about the 2020 election, including objections to donations that a group supported by the billionaire Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, his wife, made to local election offices, as well as assistance given to election administrators by nonprofit groups. Mr. Zuckerberg has said he no longer planned to award grants to election offices. President Biden narrowly won Wisconsin in 2020, a result that some Republicans tried and failed to overturn afterward. Opponents of the ballot question concerning outside staffing for election offices said Wisconsin law already made clear who could or could not work as an election official, and that passing the amendment could have unintended consequences.

Construction has not yet started on what could become the world’s tallest jail, a 300-foot-tall tower on a site in Manhattan’s Chinatown where the remnants of a former detention center still stand. Since demolition began last spring, large cracks have formed along the wall of a neighboring senior center, where residents shut their windows to block out dust. Longtime businesses have warned that they may have to close because of reduced foot traffic or costly renovations. Now, community groups that opposed the new jail are pushing for more accountability at the demolition site, formerly home to the Manhattan Detention Complex, also known as the Tombs. Locals are bracing for a yearslong construction process that they fear will become only more disruptive.

Here's what experts have to say about the safety and sustainability of the carnivore diet. The diet, similar in style to the Atkins and keto diets, goes by many names: carnivore diet, lion diet, high-fat diet and animal-based diet. Beef, butter, bacon and eggs — that's what some influencers swear by for the " carnivore diet ." Weight loss is one of the huge benefits that people who follow the carnivore diet claim they've experienced since adding more animal-based products to their diet. "You can think [that] if you're eating that kind of meal, you're helping bring down another tree on the other side," he adds.

CNN —Republican lawmakers and activists in several presidential battlegrounds are pushing ballot measures to change how elections are run in their states. And in Arizona, a so-called ballot referral moving through the Republican-controlled Legislature would upend the state’s widely used, no-excuse vote-by-mail system. Constitutional amendments in Wisconsin and ballot referenda in Arizona are not subject to the approval of governors in those states. “Wisconsin’s status as a swing state makes election integrity measures important locally, nationally and internationally.”If approved, the Wisconsin measures would be in effect for this year’s elections. Wall Street firms know the pains of having to satisfy regulators, and with advancements in artificial intelligence, there's a whole new level of scrutiny and complexity. It involves quality-and-assurance teams who test, verify, validate, and challenge the AI models before they go into production and report issues back to the engineering team to fix. In some cases, banks' technology teams are spending at least half their time documenting models for compliance, Jonas Jacobi, cofounder of fintech startup ValidMind, told Business Insider. AI models are often compared to a "black box" because it can be difficult to understand their decision-making or how the models arrive at their results. With the new injection of capital, ValidMind will build more features, like one aimed at automating the risk management of third-party vendor solutions.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Raymond Chan was convicted Wednesday of racketeering, bribery, fraud and giving false statements to investigators in a sprawling pay-to-play corruption scandal at City Hall. The federal jury reached the guilty verdict less than 24 hours after lawyers finished closing arguments, the Los Angeles Times reported. This was Chan’s second trial in the bribery case involving downtown Los Angeles real estate development projects. “This case was, and always has been, about Jose Huizar,” Hanusz said. Chan, while working with developers, was motivated not by greed but by a desire to make Los Angeles more business-friendly, Hanusz said.
