TERMINI IMERSE, Italy — Prosecutors said there "could be a question of manslaughter" as they opened an investigation into the deaths of seven people after a superyacht sank while anchored off the Sicilian coast Monday. Speaking at a press conference, prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the investigation is not currently directed at any individuals, and is looking into “the crime of culpable shipwreck and multiple manslaughter." New Zealander James Cutfield has already been questioned for more than two hours, and prosecutors said he had been "extremely cooperative." Bad weather was forecast ahead of the sinking, and questions about the weather were also raised by journalists. The body of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national who was the ship’s cook, was recovered shortly after the accident.

Quang attributes the unexpected virality to a digital trend that first appeared at the end of 2023: the office siren. AdvertisementGoogle Trends shows searches for the term "office siren" increased tenfold between the first week of May and the first week of August. The office siren is a polarizing character — a sexed-up appropriation of office wear, restyled and applied to contexts outside the office. "Obviously, I'm not wearing this to the office," Quang said. "The office siren is just a character I'm playing."

CNN —Vandalism has come to another US historic site, Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg National Military Park, where a pivotal battle of the Civil War was fought. “Our hearts sank when these two cases of vandalism were reported within days of each other,” Park Superintendent Kristina Heister said in a statement. “We were fearful that the graffiti carved into the rock may be there for future generations.”Luckily, park staff was able to clean and remove all traces of the vandalism. Heister thanked both the staffers who were able to remove the graffiti and park visitors who alerted them to the damage. More recently, rangers at the Grand Canyon – the second most visited national park in the US – issued a strong warning against leaving “love locks” hooked onto structures at the Arizona park.

Lobster fishing is a game of inches, and the number of inches is about to change. Fishing regulators are instituting a new rule that lobster fishermen must abide by stricter minimum sizes for crustaceans they harvest. The changes do not apply in Canada, which has an even larger lobster fishing industry than the U.S. Some scientists who study the fishery have supported the minimum size change. But the lobster industry sees a different story, said Patrice McCarron, executive director of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, the oldest and largest fishing industry association on the East Coast.

Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

Céline Dion’s management team and record label, Sony Music Canada, said the use of her world-renowned hit “My Heart Will Go On” at a Donald Trump campaign rally in Montana on Friday was “unauthorized.”A video of Dion performing the 1997 song was broadcast at the Trump and JD Vance rally in Bozeman, Montana, on Friday evening. In a statement on X, the Canadian musician’s team said Saturday they became aware of the Republican campaign’s use of the “video, recording, musical performance, and likeness of Celine Dion” singing the song. “In no way is this use authorized, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use,” the statement read. Dion isn’t the first artist to reject the Trump campaign’s use of their music. “Me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies,” the musician said at the time.

It was a familiar scene Friday for Team USA in the men's 4x100-meter relay, as their formidable speed was halted once again by a botched baton pass. The U.S. men's team entered the relay final as gold medal favorites, in theory, as the reigning world champions and fastest qualifiers. Christian Coleman of the United States struggles to hand the baton to teammate Kenneth Bednarek in the men's 4x100-meter relay final on Friday. Women's 100-meter silver medalist Sha'Carri Richardson anchored the U.S. effort, earning her first Olympic gold. Underneath the blast door stands one of the most powerful weapons in the US inventory, a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. But unlike the other two parts of the triad – strategic bombers and ballistic missile submarines – the ICBM launch facilities are fixed positions. Last year, the commander of US Strategic Command told Congress that China has more land-based ballistic missile launchers than the US. Russia has been carrying out military exercises involving its tactical nuclear weapons, as President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons since invading Ukraine. That complexity, Schlabach argued, drives the need for modernizing the ballistic missile fleet.

I tried several personal wellness experiments, such as intermittent fasting, polyphasic sleeping, and cold plunges. A ‘harsh reality’ for EVsFord likes to brag about its growing EV sales, but its profit is still primarily coming from the sales of gasoline powered trucks and SUVs. Ford isn’t the only automaker pulling back on its EV plans and making new investment in ICE vehicles. This is not to say that the traditional automakers are dropping their EV plans altogether or that EV sales are falling. But EV sales, which initially grew at a double-digit pace, haven’t shot up exponentially as automakers hoped or expected. That uncertainty about the future of US EV incentives prompted automakers to reconsider their earlier EV plans.

Even works of art that we think of as coming from the minds of lone creative geniuses were group efforts: Michelangelo, for example, recruited some 11 painters to assist him with the Sistine Chapel. Still, it’s only in the past few decades that attitudes around labor and the power of collectivism have shifted, making artists not only quicker to collaborate but also to give credit where credit is due. No matter the field, though, certain projects require an outsize number of bodies. Then, too, there’s the practical if unstated fact that, as artists and creative types, these people are in the business of pursuing perfection. Often, combining forces is the only way to get them closer to it.
