Elon Musk said last week that the company will begin advertising for the first time in its history. The electric carmaker rolled out a 2-minute Twitter video on its Tesla Asia account called "Drive to believe." Last week, Musk called the Tesla promotions on Twitter "preaching to the choir." Musk told CNBC's David Faber later that day that he'd only just made the decision at the event. Musk told CNBC that he hopes to use ads to combat what he said was misinformation about the brand's pricing, as well as promote its safety features.

The doctor accused of driving his family off a cliff told officials he was checking his tire pressure. But his wife said the crash was intentional, per The San Francisco Chronicle citing court documents. All four family members in the car, including the couple's 7-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son miraculously survived the steep fall. But Patel's wife, Neha Patel, told first responders "multiple times" that her husband intentionally drove the car off the cliff, the outlet reported, citing court records. In February, an attorney for Patel said in court that the man's wife did not want him to be prosecuted.

REUTERS/Al Drago/File PhotoWASHINGTON, May 16 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesday it has charged a former Apple Inc (AAPL.O) engineer with attempting to steal the firm's technology related to autonomous systems, including self-driving cars, and then fleeing to China. Two of the cases involved what Justice Department officials called procurement networks created to help Russia's military and intelligence services obtain sensitive technology. The former Apple engineer, identified as 35-year-old Weibao Wang, formerly resided in Mountain View, California, and was hired by Apple in 2016, according to an April indictment unsealed on Tuesday. After his last day at Apple, the company discovered that he had accessed large amounts of proprietary data in the days before his departure, the Justice Department said.
Eve, controlled by aircraft manufacturer Embraer (EMBR3.SA), said it expects to start commercial operations of its fully electric vehicle in 2026. The concept, called an electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle, or eVTOL, has been dubbed a flying taxi. The completed wind tunnel tests are seen as key for certification by regulators, as well as future production and sales to buyers worldwide. The wind tunnel tests were completed in Switzerland using an eVTOL scale model, which the company said helped it investigate how components such as its fuselage and wings will perform in flight. "The Eve eVTOL is unlikely to be first to market, although the order pipeline provides runway to capture market share of the emerging eVTOL market," according to Jefferies analysts.
Discovery ad sales chief Jon Steinlauf has a strategy to grab market share at the TV upfronts. WBD left money on the table at the 2022 upfront, Steinlauf said, and faces a soft 2023 ad market. Discovery's pitch to advertisers was all about the breadth of its newly merged portfolio of news, sports, and lifestyle entertainment. When it comes to WBD's Premiere package of top ad inventory, for example, ad sales chief Jon Steinlauf emphasized how advertisers could customize the mix of programming to meet their wants. Discovery debuted at an inopportune time, just a few weeks ahead of the biggest TV sales event of the year.

Footage obtained by San Francisco news site Mission Local shows police trying to stop a Waymo driverless taxi. The driverless taxis ferrying passengers throughout San Francisco are a technological marvel — and sometimes a nuisance. Waymo operates autonomous taxis in San Francisco and Phoenix, and customers can hail rides through an app. As impressive as they are, the driverless taxis on roads today still have trouble reacting to unusual situations like blocked streets or commands from first responders. A recent viral Tik Tok video shows a police officer repeatedly gesturing for a Waymo taxi to pull over.

April 28 (Reuters) - Red Bull's Formula One leader Max Verstappen put in the fastest time right at the chequered flag on Friday in a chaotic sole practice for the new format Azerbaijan Grand Prix sprint weekend. The double world champion, last year's winner in Baku, lapped the fast street circuit with a best time of one minute 42.315 seconds with his final effort on the soft tyres. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who has never won in Baku but will be chasing his third successive pole in Azerbaijan in later qualifying for Sunday's grand prix, was second on the timesheets. The Monegasque ended up 0.037 seconds slower, after going top in the dying seconds, with Red Bull's Sergio Perez third and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz fourth. Perez has the best record of any driver on the starting grid in Baku with a victory in 2021, second last year and two third places.
The engine for drones that Russia is using in Ukraine is based on stolen technology, experts said. Conflict Armament Research said the German technology was stolen by Iran in 2006. Russia has used the Iranian-made drones to destroy buildings and kill civilians in Ukraine. It said that this proves for the first time that Mado is "indeed the producer of engines" found in Shahed-136 drones used against Ukraine. The group then connected the Mado engines to German technology stolen in 2006.
REUTERS/Aly Song/File PhotoApril 27 (Reuters) - Geely's EV brand Zeekr is the latest to join a growing list of automakers that have turned to the "gigapress" die casting technique pioneered by Tesla to slash the cost of electric cars. "In the future, Zeekr will use giga-casting technology on more models," Jiang said. Metal and plastic die casting has long been used in manufacturing, but its application to large aluminium underbodies in carmaking is relatively new. The front and rear sections are then connected with large under-floor battery packs to form a three-piece EV chassis. 'MEGA-CASTING'Other automakers turning to large die casting include General Motors (GM.N), which is using the technology to help design its Cadillac Celestiq electric saloon.
Hyundai showed off a new technology called e-Corner in a recent video. Hyundai Mobis, the carmaker's parts division, released a new video of a technology it's developing called e-Corner. The clip shows a Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicle pull up directly beside an open parking spot, turn all four wheels perpendicular to the curb, and just scoot right on in. Once again, the Ioniq 5 swivels its wheels outward, but this time the front and rear wheels spin in opposite directions, making the Ioniq 5 spin in place. Later in the video, the Ioniq 5 does a "pivot turn," where the front-right wheel stays in place while the back of the vehicle swings outward.
Emergency start devices sold online starting at $1,600 can hack into a car through its wire network. The easiest access to car wires is through the headlights, car security experts say. "Normally, the wake-up message happens when you've pressed your car key. The hacking device sends a message to the car's front network — a car has many networks for logistic reasons — pretending to be the key. To study the hacking system, Tindell and Tabor purchased a similar hacking device online and reverse-engineered it.

April 23 (Reuters) - Belgian Remco Evenepoel claimed back-to-back wins in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege one-day race on Sunday with a stunning solo ride to victory while Slovenia's pre-race favourite Tadej Pogacar had to abandon the race after fracturing his wrist in a crash. Soudal Quick-Step's Evenepoel first attacked with about 34 km left with Ineos Grenadiers' Tom Pidcock joining him at the front. But Evenepoel attacked again on the next climb to leave the Briton behind with 30 km to go. My back wheel went a bit like it did last year (on a turn)," Evenepoel said. I said I wanted the picture with the jersey to put in my bedroom," Evenepoel added.

REUTERS/Jonathan ErnstSAN FRANCISCO, April 19 (Reuters) - Elon Musk said on Wednesday that electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla (TSLA.O) likely will launch full self-drive technology this year and generate significant profits that offset some of the margin pressure it's facing due to aggressive price cuts. "I hesitate to say this but I think we'll do it this year," said Tesla CEO Musk, speaking on a conference call. Tesla sells FSD software as an option for as much as $15,000. Tesla reported a lower-than-expected quarterly margin on Wednesday but Musk said he would prioritize sales growth over profits in a weak economy.

Volkswagen's new ID.7 electric sedan will go on sale in the U.S. next year. Volkswagen on Monday unveiled a new large electric sedan that it says will have well over 300 miles of range in its top-level trim when it arrives in the U.S. market next year. (The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's EV range ratings are often 10% to 20% lower than WLTP ratings.) Base models will come with a 77 kWh battery that will provide an estimated 382 miles of range on the WLTP cycle, the company said. Both batteries will accept DC fast charging: The standard 77 kWh battery can recharge at up to 170 kilowatts; the optional 86 kWh battery at up to 200 kWs.
