The book focuses on three themes, all of which can help you better understand the people around you, Brooks writes: curiosity, empathy and self-awareness. That's because they're better at taking interest in other people and giving them the floor to share their stories and perspectives authentically, Brooks writes. "Diminishers are not curious about you, they don't ask you questions," Brooks said during a discussion at Colgate University in February. But diminishers often ask questions that aren't open-ended, or use your response as a way to talk about themselves. Then, try to provide some insight, Brooks writes — rounding out the conversation by letting them know you're here for them.

CNN —Manchester City has initiated legal action against the English Premier League (EPL) over commercial rules, the UK’s Times reported on Tuesday. City, which won a fourth successive Premier League title last month, is looking to end the league’s Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules, according to The Times, which reported on specific excerpts of the lawsuit. The APT rules came into effect in December 2021 after the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle United. According to The Times, City claims the APT rules are unlawful and are seeking damages from the league. In February 2023, the Premier League accused City of breaching more than 100 financial rules, and allegations included failing to provide accurate financial information, failing to comply with UEFA’s financial fair play (FFP) regulations and failing to follow Premier League rules on profit and sustainability.

New York CNN —The Washington Post announced on Sunday that it had parted ways with its top editor, Sally Buzbee, in a seismic shakeup executed by new publisher and chief executive William Lewis just months before the high-stakes 2024 presidential election. “Sally is an incredible leader and a supremely talented media executive who will be sorely missed,” Lewis said in a statement. “I wish her all the best going forward.”While Lewis praised Buzbee publicly on Sunday, she oversaw a particularly tumultuous period at the venerable newspaper. Dollar steadies before inflation test; yen brushes off Tokyo CPI
  + stars: | 2024-05-31 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The dollar was licking wounds against peer currencies on Friday after a downward revision to U.S. GDP for the first quarter suggested room for rate cuts this year, while investors braced for inflation data. The dollar index , which measures the currency against six major peers, consolidated around 104.82 after dipping as low as 104.63 overnight. Softer U.S. consumer price inflation data earlier in May rekindled rate cut expectations for this year, weakening the dollar across the board and setting it on track to post its first monthly losses in 2024. "All told, the Tokyo CPI leaves us confident that nationwide underlying inflation will fall below 2% as soon as July." Price data for the euro zone is due on Friday, following a stronger-than-expected April inflation reading for Germany on Wednesday.

Some of the biggest scandals in sports history have revolved around players and gambling. Pete Rose is barred for life from baseball, in an agreement stemming from admissions of gambling. These aren’t just hypothetical concerns: Jontay Porter, a center for the Toronto Raptors, was recently barred for life from the N.B.A. As the new baseball season was starting, federal prosecutors said the interpreter for the star pitcher Shohei Ohtani had stolen millions from Mr. Ohtani to pay off gambling debts to an illegal sports bookie. Major League Baseball is investigating Mr. Ohtani’s former teammate David Fletcher over allegations that he placed bets with the same bookie.

A new women's basketball league has attracted a star-studded roster of investors from the media and sports world at a time when ratings and general interest in the WNBA and other professional women's leagues is rising. Athletes will be given equity in the new league, and Unrivaled said it will also feature contract opportunities that will offer the highest average salary in women's pro sports league history. Many female athletes play in other countries when the WNBA season ends to boost their earnings potential. Unrivaled's season will run from January to March and feature 30 of the top women's basketball players across six teams for a 3-on-3, compressed full court style of play on a soundstage in Miami.

The Unlikely Women Fighting for Abortion Rights
  + stars: | 2024-05-27 | by ( Kate Zernike | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
For a long time, many women who had abortions because of catastrophic fetal diagnoses told their stories only privately. Grieving pregnancies they dearly wanted and fearing the stigma of abortion, they sought the closely guarded comfort of online communities identified by the way many doctors had described the procedure — TFMR, or “termination for medical reasons.”In the two years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, their pain has been compounded into anger by new abortion bans across the country. While these women account for a fraction of abortions in the United States, they have emerged as the most powerful voices in the nation’s post-Roe debate, speaking out against bans with their stories of being forced across state lines and left to feel like criminals in seeking care. Many of these women started out opposing abortion, but as they have changed their minds, they have changed the way Americans speak about it. Shifting from private anguish to public outrage, they have also helped shift public opinion toward more support for abortion.

Smartmatic and Newsmax have since been embroiled in the years-long defamation case, which is slated to go to trial this September in Delaware Superior Court, barring an out-of-court settlement. Smartmatic further accused Newsmax of intentionally “destroying relevant evidence” by deleting texts and emails from senior officials. Fox News famously paid more than $787 million to Dominion Voting Systems to settle a case last year over similar 2020 election lies on its airwaves. A trial could put Newsmax’s financial future in peril, but there is one major difference between the Newsmax and Fox cases. The network denies wrongdoing and maintains that its 2020 election coverage is protected by the First Amendment.

They wanted to find out whether this type of facility already had tools that could remove microplastics from wastewater. In a single pass, their device can remove between 84% and 94% of microplastics in water, according to a press release. On a smaller scale, it could filter microplastics in laundry machines and even fish tanks. In another 2023 study, researchers at Shinshu University tested a similar ultrasound-filtering method to remove microplastics from water. But Ou and Huang say their device is simpler, more efficient, and the first to use ultrasound to block and filter microplastics directly.

CNN —Special counsel David Weiss plans to introduce Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop as evidence against him at his upcoming trial on felony gun charges. Republican officials and right-wing outlets have seized on the laptop’s embarrassing emails and images to attack Biden, the son of President Joe Biden. Hunter Biden’s lawyers have said the files were manipulated, and even sued a computer repair shop owner who publicly released the material. In their own court filings earlier this week, Hunter Biden’s lawyers said they want to contest the authenticity of the materials from the laptop if Weiss brings it up at trial. The testimony, prosecutors say, is “an attempt to substitute the testimony of an expert for the testimony of” the defendant.

Multifamily rents in April were 0.8% lower than they were in the same month last year, according to Apartment List. Apartment rents did rise for the third straight month, but the growth, at 0.5%, is very small. Single-family rents are much stronger, up 3.4% in March year over year, according to a new report from CoreLogic. "U.S. single-family rent growth strengthened overall in March, though some weaknesses are revealed in the latest numbers," said Molly Boesel, principal economist for CoreLogic. The former congressman rocked back and forth, his face turning red as he jabbed his finger in the air. It had been 18 months since Lee Zeldin lost his bid to become governor of New York, and now he was back at a rally in Albany, with a new war to fight. The enemy was a proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the State Constitution. “There has been no greater attack on women’s rights and girls’ rights in the State of New York throughout any of our lifetimes than Proposition 1 in November,” he said at the rally in the State Capitol earlier this month. The amendment, he added, was an “attempt by New York Democrats to deceptively put abortion on the ballot, when in reality it was a full-fledged attack on women’s rights, free speech, girls’ sports, rule of law and much more.”
