It marks the moment in June of 1865 when Union troops arrived in Texas to inform enslaved African Americans that they were free by executive decree. Though it commemorates a moment when enslaved African Americans were freed, the US is still held captive by several myths about slavery and people like Cummins. 1: African Americans were ‘freed’ after the Civil War endedThere is a popular conception that the formerly enslaved were freed after the Civil War ended. It is what historians call a “Slave Bible.” It is a copy of a Bible that was used by British missionaries to convert enslaved African Americans. Kin Cheung/APThe historical record shows that enslaved African Americans revitalized Christianity in other ways, historians say.

Talk Samantha Irby Says It’s OK to Hate Your BodyAs far as descriptions of writers go, “humorist” has an old-fashioned, almost quaint ring to it, the literary equivalent of haberdasher or lamplighter. Maybe I was born too early to get on the “I don’t give a [expletive] if you see my legs” thing. I don’t know if this is controversial, but I don’t miss my parents. But I don’t know. I think I’m off the hook a little because my main target is myself, but the joke sensitivity is wild to me.

The message was perfunctory, left by the shop owner, a usually grumpy guy who sounded like his usually grumpy self. I’ve come to interpret it as, “Whatever amount of time is before you, enjoy it, and don’t take it for granted.”So I’m planning an “Enjoy Your Time” summer. I asked you recently what sort of personal summer “brand” you might declare, what this will be “the summer of” for you. I hope they make you think a little more creatively about the possibilities for your own summer:Your summer plansIt’s the summer of Frosty Fridays, where I take my three kids out to a new ice cream shop each Friday. — Pete Horvath, ChicagoThis is #granolagrandma summer.

Former Chief of Privacy Ron DeJesus said top executives ignored multiple warnings about user data. De Jesus claimed in the lawsuit that user data was stored after accounts were deleted, and shared with third parties. In 2021, Norway fined Grindr $7 million for illegally sharing user data, which De Jesus referenced in his lawsuit. De Jesus claimed that after he shared his privacy concerns with executives, he was iced out of an executive retreat. "Mr. De Jesus was terminated for being ineffective and for poorly managing Grindr's privacy practices, which were his primary responsibility," Lenihan said.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey addresses students during a town hall at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in New Delhi, India, November 12, 2018. A team behind the decentralized social messaging app Damus, which is backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, said on Tuesday that Apple could remove the app from its App Store within 14 days. The move could stall one plan to ease the use of bitcoin and turn it into a more convenient transnational digital currency. In its tweet, Damus said that Apple is worried that zaps could be used by content creators to sell digital content on its platform. They don't sell ads, and don't collect and sell user data, which are the classic ways that social networks make money.

The deal, announced last month, would open more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers to drivers of Ford vehicles in North America starting in 2024. SS&C has invested in such charging companies as ChargePoint Holdings Inc (CHPT.N), EVgo Inc (EVGO.O) and Blink Charging Co (BLNK.O). The Ford deal was a boost to Tesla's more widespread, reliable North American Charging Standard (NACS) and dented the value of smaller players offering the rival Combined Charging System (CCS). Complaints about other charging companies' software bugs or broken charging hardware only opens the door to greater access for Tesla's standard, however, industry officials said. Under its new deal, Ford will distribute Tesla adapters to customers and starting in 2025 will equip future EVs with NACS.

Despite their ease of use, passwords come with significant downsides: More than 80% of data breaches are the result of weak passwords. In 2004, Bill Gates famously envisioned the death of traditional passwords, and there have been several attempts to replace them. That's great if all of your devices are from one company — your Apple passkey would work across an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. "Similar to our recommendations when it comes to other forms of authentication, we advise against the sharing of passkeys, passwords, etc. Passwords won't disappear overnight, but what FIDO Alliance has accomplished has convinced me our passwordless future is just around the corner.

could transform computer programming from a rarefied, highly-compensated occupation into a widely accessible skill that people can easily pick up and use as part of their jobs across a wide variety of fields. In situations where one needs a “simple” program … those programs will, themselves, be generated by an A.I. Welsh’s argument, which ran earlier this year in the house organ of the Association for Computing Machinery, carried the headline, “The End of Programming,” but there’s also a way in which A.I. could mark the beginning of a new kind of programming — one that doesn’t require us to learn code but instead transforms human-language instructions into software. Everyone is a programmer now — you just have to say something to the computer.”

It’s possible your latest request was routed to the wrong city agency (this should be handled by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development), or you missed a call from an inspector. “There is no harm in filing multiple complaints,” said William Fowler, an HPD spokesman. While your 311 calls work their way through the system, you can file what is known as an HP proceeding in housing court. This will bring your complaint before a judge, who can order the landlord to correct the problem. You don’t need a lawyer to file a housing court case.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — “Bonkers About Beetles.” “Innumerable Insects.” “Bugs: A Pop-Up Book.” The volumes that line the shelves of the jewelry designer Daniela Villegas’s home in this part of greater Los Angeles underscore what is obvious to anyone who ventures inside: She is passionate about pests. Thousands of specimens — of the six, eight- and 100-plus-leg varieties — hang in frames on the walls, are displayed in bell jars on the shelves and lie beneath the glass atop her oversized coffee table. Much of the collection was acquired at bug fairs and is shared with her husband, the furniture designer Sami Hayek (Salma’s younger brother). It is likely to make visitors think they have wandered into the entomology section of a natural history museum, or rather, its deluxe gift shop. The eccentric décor includes a stuffed armadillo adorned with its own gemstone bracelet; a wicker table in the shape of a grasshopper, topped with a crab sculpture; and a collection of Ms. Villegas’s signature Khepri rings, honoring the scarab-face god of ancient Egypt.

Daniel Dippold, a founder and investor, used OpenAI's ChatGPT to find an apartment in 2 weeks. The 28-year-old used the AI to suggest alternatives to housing websites and automate the search process. A screenshot of Dippold asking ChatGPT to make a scraper that can build a database of housing authorities in Berlin. As a result, he asked ChatGPT to generate 40 more suggestions. Since he didn't want to manually respond to each email, Dippold asked ChatGPT to generate code that would create automatic responses that would include personal documents like their passports and pay stubs.
A New Yorker thought she found her "dream couch" on the side of the road, so she brought it home. Her video documenting the find garnered over 30 million views as users weighed in on the couch worth up to $8,000. While some praised Joy for the find, others raised concerns of bed bugs and its authenticity. Others were more concerned about the risk of bed bugs and mold after Joy said the couch had been rained on when she found it. "Getting rid of bed bugs can cost thousands of dollars."
Silicon Valley's Hail Mary moment

Silicon Valley has entered the Hail Mary phase of its business cycle — a desertic part of a tech-industry downturn where desperation can turn into recklessness. Don't fear the robotsTo understand the Hail Mary moment, it's important to understand the actual capabilities of technology these tech titans are touting. Again, what Musk is describing is AI general intelligence — something much more advanced than the generative AI OpenAI is building on at the moment. During the pandemic when governments were handing out cash and people were stuck at home, the world bought everything Silicon Valley was selling. But those are exactly the types of workers getting laid off in Silicon Valley right now.

This is how language models usually start off: They guess randomly and produce gibberish. Over many, many rounds of training, language models can learn to write. As language models grow larger, the patterns that they learn can become increasingly complex. More is differentOther than the additional fine-tuning stages, the primary difference between nanoGPT and the language model underlying chatGPT is size. Large language models can become highly unpredictable, as evidenced by Microsoft Bing A.I.’s early interactions with my colleague Kevin Roose.
