Wonder Land: As if Trump-Biden weren’t enough, two of the U.S.’s most prominent CEOs may actually duke it out. Images: AFP/Getty Images Composite: Mark KellyWhen the National Football League inducted a new class of Hall of Famers on Aug. 5, one thing was conspicuously missing: bad speeches. Winners droned on with a laundry list of thank-yous, reminiscing with obscure anecdotes and humorless jokes. This year, speeches were short, scripted and sincere. Inductee Joe Thomas , a former Cleveland Browns offensive tackle, was quoted as saying: “Anyone who doesn’t use a speech coach in this situation is an idiot.” From his lips to the ears of senior executives, politicians and maybe even presidential candidates.

Executives at the Hall, the league and the networks looked at ways to speed up the ceremony. None of the options were used, though, because they might embarrass the speakers, said Rich Desrosiers, a spokesman for the Hall. One solution was to enlist Jezra Kaye, a professional writing coach, in 2021 to work with inductees on improving — and shortening — their speeches. Kaye, a former jazz singer and romance novel writer living in Brooklyn, said it doesn’t matter that she knows next to nothing about football. “Anyone who doesn’t use a speech coach in this situation is an idiot,” he said.

has changed its personal conduct policy, expanding the offenses that warrant more serious penalties to include sexual assault “involving threats or coercion” and including “a pattern of conduct” and “offenses that involve planning” as factors that could increase punishment. These changes come one year after a disciplinary officer cited limitations of the league’s policy in issuing initial discipline to Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was accused of sexual misconduct and harassment by more than two dozen women. Watson, 27, denied the accusations. He was not charged criminally and has settled 23 of the 26 lawsuits filed against him; one was withdrawn (“in light of privacy and security concerns,” according to a court filing) and two others are still active. They spoke under condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

Hot pink made waves when Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli released her own iteration, called “Shocking pink,” in the mid-1930s. The original Barbie doll didn’t even wear pink when it first debuted in 1959, wearing, instead, a black and white chevron bathing suit. Barbie’s pink shades evolved over the years, and in 2008 the vibrant “Barbie Pink” became an official Pantone color. Gifty Walker, Joybird’s director of merchandising and sourcing in Los Angeles, noted that Joybird had a hot pink couch that was popular in 2016. Now hot pink is back and customers are using it to eschew traditional neutrals like grays, browns, and tans.

It pitted Mr. Bayless, a journalist who helped popularize the daytime sports talk format on ESPN with a show called “First Take,” against Mr. Sharpe, a Hall of Fame tight end who won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and one with the Baltimore Ravens. In an early episode of the show in 2016, Lil Wayne appeared to discuss the national anthem protests led by Colin Kaepernick and other N.F.L. This is not a perspective that has much cultural purchase on NPR or CNN, but it is shared by millions of Americans. Throughout their exchange, Mr. Bayless asked occasional questions but seemed mostly content to listen. A self-described “God and country guy,” Mr. Bayless is often considered a mouthpiece for older, tradition-minded sports fans, but his own views are somewhat less predictable.

Every morning, as millions of Americans light up the gas stoves in their kitchens to heat some coffee or griddle their hash browns, they aren’t just sending delicious breakfast smells wafting through their homes. The blue flames also emit harmful pollutants like nitrogen dioxides, as well as planet-warming gases. So a team of scientists from Stanford recently embarked on a testing tour of New York City apartments to better understand the extent of the pollution and how it flows from room to room in people’s real homes. Concerns over the health and climate effects of gas-burning stoves have already prompted some cities and states to seek to phase out natural gas connections in new buildings, and the federal government has also moved to strengthen efficiency standards for gas stoves. Last week in Washington, Republicans convened a hearing of the House Oversight Committee “examining the Biden administration’s regulatory assault on Americans’ gas stoves.”
Jim Brown Should Be Seen Fully, Flaws and All

That is what Jim Brown embodied. Brown, who died Thursday at 87, lived a life that became an ode to self-determination in the face of stinging racism. But we start here with Brown’s life in sports, for his career as an athlete was truly unique. In college at Syracuse, Brown dominated on the football field as few ever have. The second Black player in the history of Syracuse football, he became an all-American in football and lacrosse.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my husband, Jim Brown,” Monique Brown wrote on Instagram. Our hearts are broken…”The sole team Brown played for, the Cleveland Browns, tweeted, “Jim Brown Forever. Jim Brown, led the league in rushing in eight of his nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns and set the all-time record for rushing yards. Brown also made his mark as a civil rights activist, working with inner-city gang members and prison inmates. Jim Brown’s legacy will live on forever,” the NFL tweeted.
And in Cleveland, the franchise hasn’t been the same since the peak of his powers. The Browns haven’t won a championship since his retirement. AP, Next: Shayan Asgharnia for The Wall Street Journal
Jim Brown, legendary NFL running back, dead at 87

[1/2] Former NFL football player Jim Brown speaks after meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, U.S., October 11, 2018. Brown led the NFL in rushing in eight of his nine seasons and was voted the league's most valuable player four times. "I didn't retire because I was broken down and slow," Brown told Sports Illustrated in 2015. "I was basically a proponent of economic development as a way to equality, social equality," Brown told the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2013. The NFL this year honored Brown by renaming the league's rushing title the Jim Brown Award.
His family announced his death on Friday on Instagram. Playing for the Browns from 1957 to 1965 after earning all-American honors at Syracuse University in football and lacrosse, Brown helped take Cleveland to the 1964 National Football League championship. In any game, he dragged defenders when he wasn’t running over them or flattening them with a stiff arm. He eluded them with his footwork when he wasn’t sweeping around ends and outrunning them. He never missed a game, piercing defensive lines in 118 consecutive regular-season games, though he played one year with a broken toe and another with a sprained wrist.
When it comes to composting, where things break down — or don’t — is often where we get in our own way. We make the whole process too hard by fixating on details instead of the big picture. Commercial composting operations rely on those rules, and the science behind them, to produce material that is consistent and meets regulatory guidelines. We backyard composters can go a little easier on ourselves and still have great results, producing soil-improving bounty from our organic waste. Ms. Novak, who is also the founder and director of Growing Chefs, a field-to-fork food-education program, lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where she composts in her backyard, too.

Real estate investor Peter Keane-Rivera recently got into short-term vacation rentals. After nearly five and a half years of doing long-term rentals, Seattle-based property owner Peter Keane-Rivera is experimenting with short-term vacation rentals via Airbnb. "He said, 'you'll pretty much double the rent on a long-term rental unit if you convert it to a short-term vacation rental,'" Keane-Rivera, who works full-time at a large aerospace manufacturer in the Seattle area, told Insider. While that may have been true when his mentor was listing Airbnbs, vacation rental bookings started slowing down in 2022 and hosts started worrying about what was coined 'Airbnbust.' After looking through listings of other Airbnbs in the Seattle area and evaluating his competition, Keane-Rivera settled on creating a 70s-themed space.
Cleveland ranked No.1 on the list with diners there adding a 20.6% gratuity to their checks, on average. San Francisco brings up the rear, with a 17% average tip. As long as the server doesn't stick a fork in my eye, they get 20% — more if they're especially good. I recently picked a few things up at a local grocer/convenience store/deli, and when the touchscreen flipped, I was prompted to tip 20%, 22%, or 25%.

"Mr. Beckham personally undertook to obtain customized Nike cleats that would not clash with the Rams uniforms," his attorneys wrote in the lawsuit.
