CNN —Ahead of potential civil unrest due to Tuesday’s presidential election, the National Guard is on standby as a precaution in several states, including Washington state and Oregon, where hundreds of ballots were damaged or destroyed after at least three ballot drop boxes were recently set on fire, officials say. Tina Kotek said in a statement Friday the National Guard is standing ready as political leaders call for peaceful protests, according to CNN affiliate KTVZ. In recent years, the National Guard has been activated in several states to assist largely with cyber security threats during elections. Outrage has followed the release of a video from a Halloween parade in Pennsylvania that seemed to depict Vice President Kamala Harris tied to a golf cart carrying a man wearing a mask of former President Donald Trump. The float moved along a main street in Mount Pleasant, a town of about 4,000 people located 45 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. A video appeared to show a woman dressed as Harris with her hands tied at the Halloween parade Wednesday. The fire department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News or share who did the float belong to. The fire department said on Facebook that it has “traditionally only provided safety & traffic control” during the parade.

Abortion is the most-mentioned topic in Democratic closing ads, followed by immigration, health care, bipartisanship, and taxation, according to an analysis of more than 300 TV ads from candidates and joint ads they ran with party committees. The analysis looked at ads, tracked by AdImpact, that aired Wednesday in competitive House and Senate races. Immigration is the top topic in Republican ads, followed by Vice President Kamala Harris, taxation, President Joe Biden, and candidate character. With Republicans favored to win the Senate, Harris may have few opportunities to pursue an ambitious legislative agenda, shifting the Democratic ideological fight to key personnel decisions. “It’d be a strategic blunder for Harris to pick an ugly fight over Lina Khan’s future when there’s already strong consensus among Democrats. Moderate senators like Bob Casey and Jackie Rosen are actively campaigning on the FTC’s work to lower prices,” said a Senate Democratic aide, who was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive subject. Removing her would not only infuriate the left but it could provoke a confirmation fight with Senate Republicans over her replacement. Some in the progressive movement believe Harris should simply leave her there without going through confirmation again in the Senate if need be.

An overdue hunter in Alaska was found dead Wednesday after an apparent attack by at least one brown bear, state police said. A search was launched, and his remains were found at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, state troopers said in a daily report of incidents. Investigators know a brown bear was involved because that's the only type of bear in the area, DeSpain said. Alaska has black bears, brown bears — which include grizzlies — and polar bears. There are around 100,000 black bears and around 30,000 brown bears in Alaska, the state Department of Fish and Game says on its website.

CNN —California voters will decide this election whether to increase the state’s minimum wage to $18 an hour, which would be the highest in the US. Currently, the Golden State’s minimum wage is $16 and is set to rise to $16.50 next year. California has been among the more aggressive states when it comes to hiking the minimum wage. Some 44% of likely California voters said they would vote yes in an October poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California, down from 50% in September.
