The fighting had become increasingly ferocious last month at the Zenith air-defense base a mile south of Avdiivka, where for years a company of Ukrainian soldiers had defended the southern approaches to the city. Russian troops had moved up on their flanks and were pounding them from all sides with tank, artillery and mortar fire, smashing their defenses and wounding men. “Every day we tried to repel enemy attacks,” said Senior Soldier Viktor Biliak, a 26-year-old with the 110th Mechanized Brigade, who had spent 620 days defending the base. “All the fortifications were being destroyed and there was no possibility to build new ones.”Soldiers interviewed after their retreat described an uneven four-month battle under a relentless onslaught of Russian artillery and glide bombs that destroyed buildings and broke through deep concrete bunkers. As the Ukrainians took casualties they became increasingly outnumbered by the Russians assaulting the city, who broke through at two strategic points and quickly seeded areas with fighters.

Cars sit parked in front of a Macy's store at Bay Fair Mall on February 27, 2024 in San Leandro, California. Arkhouse Management, a real-estate-focused investing firm said on Sunday it and Brigade Capital Management have raised their offer for Macy's after the department store chain rebuffed their prior proposal as too low. "The Macy's Inc Board will carefully review and evaluate the latest proposal," Macy's said in a separate statement. Like other legacy department store operators, Macy's has struggled to compete against younger, online competitors or peers with smaller brick-and-mortar footprints. This has given Arkhouse and Brigade an opening to put pressure on Macy's to explore a sale.

Ukrainian soldiers report inconsistent training and combat abilities in Russian troops. Despite the ineffectiveness of poorly trained troops, these waves can strain Ukrainian defenders. Advertisement"Russian forces likely used poorly trained personnel to carry out mass daily attacks on Ukrainian positions and employed trained personnel with better equipment to assault specific positions after exhausting Ukrainian forces," they said. ISW experts say it's also possible that Russia used "Storm" units, penal units made up of convicts, in Avdiivka. Given that these convicts are poorly trained for battle, experts have also noted they are usually ineffective and these units provide "marginal combat power."

Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty ImagesEarly on in the war with Russia, Ukraine's successes on the battlefield prompted warnings from defense analysts that Moscow — with its back against the wall militarily — could lash out, using a nuclear weapon on Ukrainian soil. Defense analysts noted that the more successes Ukraine saw, the more dangerous and unpredictable its opponent Russia could become as it sought to regain the initiative. That, in turn, would make the war much harder and more dangerous for Russia.
