Matt Escalante is the new VP of Brach's seasonal division, best known for its candy corn. The company knows its top treat is controversial — but it dominates a nearly $90 million market. AdvertisementIf you've eaten candy corn sometime in the last century, there's a good chance it came from Brach's. The confection giant is best known for cornering the candy corn market, churning out 28 million pounds of the candle-like candy each year and raking in $75 million of an $88.5 million candy corn market in 2022, according to data from the consumer research firm Circana. And while the candy corn market stays booming, the product itself — with its waxy texture, neon coloring, and saccharine aftertaste — is notoriously polarizing.

Investors Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz said Chinese EVs are beating out American and European automakers. Andreessen Horowitz founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz said on their podcast that Chinese automakers have developed high-quality and affordable vehicles supported by a robust supply chain ecosystem. With the American auto industry struggling with slowing growth in its EV market, American automakers need to be able to offer a compelling $20,000 EV that also competes on quality if the US doesn't want to "lose the auto industry," Andreessen said. Andreessen said that Chinese car brands are outperforming American EV automakers in affordability and quality, calling them "super technologically sophisticated." AdvertisementTo keep up, American automakers need to be able to offer a similarly affordable and full-featured car at the $20,000 price point, Andreessen said.

In a Thursday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Clorox CEO Linda Rendle detailed how her company managed to recover after a cyberattack last year disrupted production and seriously hurt business. Rendle discussed the serious nature of the attack, saying the company was "operating in manual mode for nearly two months" and added that Clorox lost about a third of its distribution and market share. Its cat litter brand, Fresh Step, was hit particularly hard as cat owners who switched brands due to shortages were reluctant to switch back. But Rendle said the cat litter business has been on the rebound, regaining much of its lost market share, but admitted that "we have a lot more work to do in that category." She also expressed gratitude towards retailers who worked with Clorox during that time and added that these partnerships are stronger coming out of the attack.

How Hermès is bucking the global luxury slowdown
  + stars: | 2024-10-31 | by ( Natalie Rice | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
French luxury company Hermès has spent nearly 200 years emphasizing quality, scarcity and desirability — a strategy that's helped it dominate the luxury sector, even over its much larger rivals. Analysts say the Birkin and the Kelly account for between 25% and 28% of Hermès' total revenue. For fiscal year 2023 Hermès reported the fourth-highest revenue total of the major luxury fashion brands, behind LVMH , Richemont and Kering . In its most recent quarter, Hermès posted double-digit revenue growth while competitors LVMH and Kering reported sharper-than-expected declines in sales. Globally, many luxury consumers have pulled back on spending, particularly aspirational buyers in 2023 and 2024.

The Bristol Myers Squibb research and development center at Cambridge Crossing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US, on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023. Bristol Myers Squibb on Thursday reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that blew past Wall Street's expectations thanks to its blockbuster blood thinner Eliquis and a portfolio of drugs it expects to deliver long-term growth. Bristol Myers previously said it expected sales to rise in the "upper end" of the low single-digit range. The results come as Bristol Myers moves to cut $1.5 billion in costs by 2025 and funnel that money into key drug brands and research and development programs. Agents might be emboldened to share listings among private networks of in-the-know brokers rather than market them to everyone. And if the goal is a transparent market that prioritizes consumers, the clear-cooperation policy is a flawed tool. Redfin estimated that in the second quarter of 2019, about 1.7% of listings, or some 18,000 homes, were likely pocketed. In a hot market, it's easier for brokers to market a home off the databases and still get it sold. What has changed since the rule went into effect is brokerages' eagerness to control access to home listings.

BRUSSELS, Belgium — The European Union is imposing duties on imports of electric vehicles from China starting Wednesday after talks between Brussels and Beijing failed to find an amicable solution to their trade dispute. According to the commission, which manages trade disputes on behalf of the 27 E.U. member countries, sales of Chinese-built electric cars jumped from 3.9% of the EV market in 2020 to 25% by September 2023, in part by unfairly undercutting E.U. Other EV manufacturers in China, including Western companies such as Volkswagen and BMW, would be subject to duties of 20.7%. The measures were published in the bloc’s legal Official Journal late Tuesday, meaning duties entered into force as of midnight, said E.U.
