Why It Matters: Germany has long neglected military spending. Despite intense pressure from the United States, Germany last spent 2 percent of its G.D.P. on defense in 1991, a year after the reunification of the former East and West German nations, according to statistics from the World Bank. The United States is using incentives, including tax breaks, to lure businesses in the green energy and technology sectors. “Germany is increasingly falling behind when it comes to investment and location decisions,” said Tanja Gönner, general director of the German Federation of Industries.

The People's Bank of China, which typically issues guidance on dollar deposit rates to state banks, did not immediately comment on the matter. The lenders - Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (601398.SS), , Bank of China (601988.SS), , Agricultural Bank of China (601288.SS), , China Construction Bank (601939.SS), and Bank of Communications (601328.SS), - did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The lower rates could both discourage households from putting savings into higher-yielding dollar deposits and nudge Chinese firms, especially exporters, to settle foreign exchange receipts in yuan. The latest cut in dollar deposit rates was the second in barely a month. Some currency traders also said the cuts in dollar deposit rates would ease pressure on commercial lenders' net interest margin, as banks' dollar deposit rates had risen above lending rates before the recent adjustments.

Violent protests have rocked France after the police killing of a 17-year-old during a traffic stop. The civil unrest forced French President Emmanuel Macron to postpone a trip to Germany. Verstappen leads Red Bull one-two on Sprint grid

The double world champion lapped his team's home Red Bull Ring with a fastest time of one minute 04.440 seconds on a drying track to complete a qualifying double after securing pole on Friday for Sunday's main grand prix. Red Bull have won all of them, Verstappen six. "It's nice to have a lockout in the Red Bull Ring for the team," said the Mexican, who was 0.493 slower than his team mate. "The sprint race doesn't really matter anyway," said Hamilton, who had his fastest effort deleted for exceeding track limits and was then overtaken by Verstappen while trying to set a valid lap. The race will be the second standalone sprint of the season after Baku, won by Perez in April.

Growth is expected to pick up, but further increases in interest rates could act as a brake on the economy. France’s annual inflation rate fell to 5.3 percent in June, from 6 percent in May. Germany, the largest economy in Europe, saw a rise in its annual inflation rate to 6.8 percent, up from 6.3 percent in May. Inflation rates in Germany are expected to resume their fall in September. After adjusting for inflation, profits were above their prepandemic level while workers’ compensation was 2 percent below the trend in the first quarter of this year.

June 26 (Reuters) - A Tesla (TSLA.O) vehicle that was operating on its Autopilot software crashed into a stationary truck on a highway in Pennsylvania on Friday night, police said, adding to scrutiny of the automaker's driver assistance system. The police said the car lost control due to being on Autopilot, adding that the 18-year-old male driver was charged with "careless driving." U.S. regulators have been investigating a series of accidents where Tesla vehicles on Autopilot collided with parked emergency vehicles. In February, a Tesla Model S crashed into a stationary fire truck in Walnut Creek, California, killing the car's driver and triggering an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Tesla says Autopilot enables a car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane, but those features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.

WASHINGTON, June 24 (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety regulators said on Saturday they are investigating Ford Motor's (F.N) prior recalls of 710,000 Explorer SUVs over power loss reports to determine if the fix is adequate. 2 U.S. automaker issued recalls in April 2022 and March on Ford Explorer SUVs from the 2020-2022 model years to address a rear axle horizontal mounting bolt that may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect. Ford said earlier its recalls were to address a disconnected driveshaft that could result in the vehicle rolling away placed in 'Park' without the parking brake applied, increasing the risk of a crash. NHTSA said it has received two complaints alleging a loss of power or transmission torque of the rear wheels in Explorer vehicles that had received the recall fix. One complaint told NHTSA that after getting the software update "the vehicle would randomly slam to a complete stop while driving.

Why cities want to ban new drive-thrus
  + stars: | 2023-06-24 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Magnets of traffic and congestion, drive-thrus discourage walking, public transit use and visits to neighboring businesses. A host of cities and regions want the sprawl to stop: Atlanta lawmakers will vote this summer on whether to ban new drive-thrus in the popular Beltline area. Minneapolis; Fair Haven, New Jersey; Creve Coeur, Missouri; Orchard Park, New York, and other cities have banned new drive-thrus in recent years. Experts say pedestrian safety can be improved by tightly managing access along arterial roads and locating drive-thrus away from them. Cities push backAtlanta City Councilman Jason Dozier proposed a bill this year to block new drive-thrus around the Atlanta Beltline, a pedestrian trail along a 22-mile railroad corridor.

Rome's move will limit the influence of its largest investor, China's Sinochem which has a 37% stake. China is the third-largest market for Bergamo-based Brembo, after the United States and Germany. "If China should somehow retaliate, it wouldn't be just Brembo to suffer, but the whole Italian economy," the source said, referring to the extensive business interests of Italian companies in China. PUTTING THE BRAKES ONAnalysts have speculated about a possible long-term plan to merge Brembo and Pirelli, two of Italy's largest components suppliers in the automotive industry. Pirelli has a market cap of around 4.5 billion euros ($4.9 billion), broadly in line with 4.8 billion euros for Brembo.

LONDON, June 20 (Reuters) - Britain's Northern Ireland minister said on Tuesday talks to restore the province's devolved government were moving slowly because there was a lack of clarity on the right legislative approach to end the impasse. Northern Ireland's devolved executive collapsed in February last year when the Democratic Unionist Party pulled out in protest at Britain's post-Brexit trade deal with the European Union. They then also rejected a revised deal, the Windsor Framework, reached last February. The British government is in talks with the DUP on restoring the power-sharing system but Northern Ireland minister Chris Heaton-Harris declined to be drawn on the details of how those talks were going. Speaking separately in Dublin, U.S. Special Envoy to Northern Ireland Joe Kennedy said that while there is real interest from U.S. companies to invest in Northern Ireland, they want to see how that Windsor Framework is implemented.

When a Tesla vehicle has this mode enabled, it eliminates what owners of the cars refer to as the "nag." The researcher has nicknamed the feature "Elon Mode," but that is not the company's internal nomenclature for it, he said. Instead, Tesla driver assistance systems require a human driver to remain attentive and ready to brake or steer at any moment. Typically, when a Tesla driver is using Autopilot or FSD (or their variations), a visual symbol blinks on the car's touchscreen to prompt drivers to apply resistance to the steering wheel at frequent intervals. If the driver does not grasp the steering wheel, the nag escalates to a beeping noise.

The new rule highlights how governments are reassessing their reliance on India's $42 billion pharmaceutical industry since the contamination came to light last year. India's industry supplies nearly half of the pharmaceuticals used in Africa. In April, India’s government said its officials had held meetings in Africa to ensure its drug exports did not suffer after at least 70 children died in Gambia after ingesting the cough syrup last year. "Quntrol shall conduct document verification, physical inspection of the consignment and sampling, for laboratory testing for each shipment," the letter said. Since June 1, India has made tests mandatory for all cough syrups before they are exported.

Red Bull can win everything but the gap may be closing
  + stars: | 2023-06-19 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
June 19 (Reuters) - Red Bull boss Christian Horner recognised after Sunday's landmark Canadian Grand Prix that his runaway Formula One leaders could win every race this season. "On this venue yes, the gap is shorter... it's inevitable that they are closing, we'd be surprised if that wouldn't be the case," said Horner. If there is an Achilles' Heel in Red Bull's dominance, it is the current dependence on Verstappen for the top step of the podium. Should Verstappen suffer a setback, mechanical or otherwise, the chances of the second Red Bull coming through for the win are looking a lot less certain and rivals are sensing opportunities. Verstappen's last race retirement was in Australia in April 2022 and the last time he was beaten by someone not in a Red Bull was last November, when Mercedes's George Russell won in Brazil.

MONTREAL, June 19 (Reuters) - Red Bull's advertising slogan is 'gives you wings' but Max Verstappen had the whole bird on board when he won Sunday's Canadian Formula One Grand Prix. Red Bull's double world champion reported a bird strike early in the 70 lap race at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and team boss Christian Horner provided more details. "I think the biggest moment he had was hitting a bird that did half the race behind the front right brake duct," he told reporters. Verstappen told Sky Sports television: "It was still stuck on my car when I came in, it didn't look great. CNN —Max Verstappen put in another dominant performance to win the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, bringing him level with Formula One legend Ayrton Senna’s victory total. The 25-year-old ties Senna’s career victory total, with the win also being Red Bull’s 100th team victory. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso finished 9.5 seconds behind Verstappen in second place with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton completing the top three. Later in the race, Verstappen avoided suffering a similar fate to that of Mercedes driver George Russell who, after colliding with the wall off of turn 8/9, was ultimately forced to retire. I didn’t have one lap where I could relax a little bit, so it was an amazing battle.”He added: “At the beginning I had a little bit more pace, and at the end I think Lewis had a little bit more pace.

Future Toyota electric vehicles could include simulated manual transmissions. The new models will even simulate the experience of the car stuttering if drivers mess up. Toyota's future electric vehicles may come with an extra hit of nostalgia for seasoned drivers: a fake manual transmission. Those who never learned to drive a manual car will even be able to experience that initial terror of making mistakes. The fake manual transmission won't actually have any functional purpose.

Toyota's making an EV with a manual transmission

New York CNN —For those who find electric cars a bit boring, Toyota engineers are working on a realistic-feeling fake manual transmission as a possible feature. To be clear, a manual transmission on an electric car would serve absolutely no purpose. Toyota’s virtual manual transmission includes programming that will allow drivers to realistically experience using it badly, up to a point. If the driver doesn’t “give it enough gas” or selects the wrong gear the car will shake and buck, just like a gas-powered manual transmission car would. If the drivers don’t feel like using the fake manual transmission, they don’t have to.

He warned that contaminated medicines could still be found for several years, because adulterated barrels of an essential ingredient may remain in warehouses. Cough syrups and the ingredient, propylene glycol, both have shelf-lives of around two years. Unscrupulous actors sometimes substitute propylene glycol with toxic alternatives, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, because they are cheaper, several pharmaceutical manufacturing experts told Reuters. The WHO said it has also offered help to Liberia and Cameroon – which recently signalled that it too may have contaminated cough syrups for sale. The contaminated syrups in Liberia were made by India's Synercare Mumbai, according to the Nigerian regulator.

Growth in the euro zone is at best stagnating and inflation has been moderating for months, courtesy of lower energy prices and the steepest increase in interest rates in the ECB's 25-year history. But inflation in the euro zone is still unacceptably high for the ECB at 6.1% and underlying price growth, which typically excludes food and energy, is only starting to slow. That was set to keep the ECB on the tightening path, particularly after it failed to predict the current bout of high inflation and began raising rates later than many global peers last year. Two quarters of contraction in industrial powerhouse Germany dragged the euro zone into a shallow recession last winter and the economy is likely to eke out only modest growth this year. "The Governing Council’s past rate increases are being transmitted forcefully to financing conditions and are gradually having an impact across the economy," the ECB said in the statement.
