Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan predict relatively muted S&P 500 returns over the next decade. AdvertisementMuch has been said about the gloomy outlook for the S&P 500 that some of Wall Street's largest investment banks conveyed in recent weeks. Goldman Sachs said in October that the S&P 500 would return 3% annually, on average, over the next 10 years, underperforming current 10-year Treasury yields. Goldman Sachs"There is little argument that U.S. stock market valuations are elevated compared to historical averages. Investors appeared to do that, with the S&P 500 rising 0.4% on Friday to 5,728, 2.3% below all-time highs.

Next week's presidential election could have a big impact on municipal bonds, according to Morgan Stanley. In that case, the federal tax exemption becomes worth more, said Dan Close, head of municipals at Nuveen. However, studies have shown a move of just a couple percentage points "doesn't really move the needle" for muni demand, Brandon said. The TCJA increased the AMT exemption and raised the income level at which the exemption would phase out. That's because banks and insurance companies in the U.S. own about a quarter of all outstanding muni bonds, he explained.

The U.S. Federal Reserve's decision to cut interest rates in September, with further reductions expected, could prove to be a boon for the emerging economies of Southeast Asia. David Sumual, chief economist of Bank Central Asia, said Indonesia is one such country that could take advantage of both short-term and long-term Fed policy. Higher rates in the U.S. have traditionally been a negative for emerging markets as U.S. investors typically send their dollars home in search of decent yields. But on the flipside, when U.S. rates ease, it can boost emerging markets who see renewed flows into their economies. Global commodities (a cornerstone of many emerging markets) also tend to rise in price as the U.S. dollar drops on a more dovish outlook by the Federal Reserve.

"The differences between Trump and Harris are as wide as we have ever seen." Differences in trade policy specifically, he said, are going to "determine where growth and earnings take place around the world." In contrast to Trump's trade policy, reduced trade tensions under Harris could lead to gains for FedEx , which has advanced more than 8% this year. During that debate, Harris also accused Trump of gearing up to abandon support of Ukraine. Financial providers must make this information available without charging fees.”The rule will also restrict how third parties may use and retain the data consumers request be shared. Currently, more than 80% of India's energy needs are met by coal, oil and solid biomass, according to the International Energy Agency. On the demand side, the Indian government has aggressively pushed policies that favor vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), a derivative of liquified natural gas (LNG). Meanwhile, the number of households that could receive piped natural gas is more than 300 million. For instance, natural gas is a crucial ingredient for making fertilizers, and manufacturing it domestically helps increase food security. Seth is also optimistic about India's growth rate for its third and fourth quarters despite slower capital expenditure in some states.

BRUSSELS, Belgium — The European Union is imposing duties on imports of electric vehicles from China starting Wednesday after talks between Brussels and Beijing failed to find an amicable solution to their trade dispute. According to the commission, which manages trade disputes on behalf of the 27 E.U. member countries, sales of Chinese-built electric cars jumped from 3.9% of the EV market in 2020 to 25% by September 2023, in part by unfairly undercutting E.U. Other EV manufacturers in China, including Western companies such as Volkswagen and BMW, would be subject to duties of 20.7%. The measures were published in the bloc’s legal Official Journal late Tuesday, meaning duties entered into force as of midnight, said E.U.

According to Hurun's 2024 rich list, China lost 432 billionaires since the high of 1,185 in 2021. Hurun, a private research group that has tracked Chinese billionaires since 1999, said the total peaked in 2021 with 1,185 billionaires, a figure which fell to 753, a decline of 432, or 36% of the total. It comes as some of China's superrich choose to lie low or leave the country, finding covert ways to take their money with them. Silver told Fortt that his current model shows the odds favoring Trump, who holds a 55% to 45% win probability advantage over Harris. Most people no longer even have the landline phones which past election cycle polling history relied on. Why the betting markets may be all 'vibe and chatter'The betting markets show a much bigger edge for Trump, with major wagers placed on Polymarket, Robinhood jumping into the action, and presidential election contracts surging in popularity. Critics have raised concerns that the election betting markets are potentially being manipulated. But Silver, who is a consultant to one of the leading prediction markets, Polymarket, says he wouldn't pay much attention to the betting markets data right now, as they simply may not be very accurate at this moment in the election cycle.

Major Wall Street banks remain bullish on Alphabet following the tech titan's strong third-quarter results . On Tuesday, Google's parent company reported earnings of $2.12 per share, while analysts polled by LSEG had predicted $1.85 per share. The company's revenue grew 15% year over year to $88.27 billion, more than the same quarter last year and the $86.30 billion analysts had anticipated. "We think shares could remain choppy as we work through the Search remedies, given the large impact zone, but performance in 3Q was solid." Swiss banking titan UBS on Wednesday posted a large profit beat, after completing its first wave of client migrations following its integration of collapsed domestic rival Credit Suisse. Net profit attributable to shareholders came in at $1.43 billion, compared with a mean forecast of $667.5 million in a LSEG poll of analysts. UBS defends it is not "too big to fail." UBS still faces the lofty tasks of integrating its IT system with that of Credit Suisse, along with migrating clients — with the latter transition set to take around 18 months, Reuters reported earlier this month. The UBS results come after the profit beat of Germany's largest lender Deutsche Bank last Wednesday and join this week's spate of third-quarter reports from European lenders, including from BNP Paribas and Santander.

The thresholds to earn elite status on the airline's MileagePlus program are going up about 25% and include either spending on a co-branded card or a combination of spending and flying. The lowest level status, Silver Premier in 2025 will require customers to earn 5,000 premier qualifying points, or PQP, and fly 15 qualifying flights, up from 4,000 premier qualifying points and 12 qualifying flights. Travelers earn one PQPs for every $1 they spend on United and other qualifying flights. Earning Silver status only by spending— meaning getting to that status without the qualifying flights — will go for 6,000 points, up from 5,000.
