Active management is more important now than ever, and Goldman Sachs recommends taking steps now to prepare for a lukewarm second half of 2024. To address geopolitical instability and financial shocks, Goldman Sachs recommends hedging risk through commodities. Goldman Sachs is seeing increasing opportunities in Asia.

CHINESE INTEREST AS WESTERN BANKS EXIT"The proposed World Bank project is a creative way of addressing the challenge of de-risking and small scale in Pacific Island countries," said Lalita Moorty, the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific director for prosperity. Without access to overseas banks, Pacific countries would struggle to receive remittances - a key component of their economies - welcome holidaymakers or trade with the wider world. "It can create instability for the financial system," said Denton Rarawa, senior economics adviser at the Pacific Islands Forum. "What we're saying is that if you're not going to address concerns and issues we have, Pacific countries will start looking elsewhere for support."

Wells Fargo on Friday reported a 9% decline in net interest income, even though its second-quarter earnings and revenue exceeded Wall Street expectations. That was below the $12.12 billion expected by analysts, according to FactSet. The bank said the drop was due to the impact of higher interest rates on funding costs. "We continued to see growth in our fee-based revenue offsetting an expected decline in net interest income," CEO Charlie Scharf said in a statement. Wells Fargo saw net income dip to $4.91 billion in the second quarter, from $4.94 billion during the same quarter a year ago.

Citi has identified several undervalued global stocks exposed to artificial intelligence that present substantial investment opportunities. AI has driven approximately half the 11% return in the MSCI All Country World Index so far, according to Citi. The picture resembles the S & P 500 , where mega-cap stocks focused on AI have driven much of the rally. While many AI stocks have benefited from both expanding multiples and upward earnings revisions, Citi has identified a subset of 19 stocks that buck this trend. This dual tailwind of improving valuations and fundamentals has not been present in stocks with medium or low AI exposure — such as those in the table above.

"Our conversations with investors have been defined by skepticism about latter stages of AI adoption," Ryan Hammond of Goldman's portfolio strategy research team said in a recent note to clients. "Even among investors that are long-term bullish on the potential gains from AI adoption, there appears to be considerable uncertainty about the timeline." Goldman's AI adoption tracker showed that only 5% of U.S. companies are using generative AI to produce goods and services. Many software companies tied to AI posted disappointing guidance during the last earnings seasons that triggered a sizeable sell-off, Goldman noted. Investors should focus on revised sales forecasts of AI-related companies, Goldman said.

The bank said recent supply chain checks show "exceedingly robust" demand for Nvidia's next-gen chips. Nvidia's potential $5 EPS in 2025 would give it a valuation of 25.6x on a forward price-to-earnings basis. Based on recent supply chain checks, UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri said "demand momentum for Blackwell rack-scale systems remains exceedingly robust." Sell-side consensus estimates expect Nvidia to deliver earnings per share of $3.62 in 2025, which gives it a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 35x. Also boding well for more gains for Nvidia is the growing "wall of worry" surrounding the stock in recent weeks.

London CNN —French stocks and government bonds struggled to find direction Monday following surprise results in France’s parliamentary elections, which saw left-wing parties outperform the far right Sunday, leaving the country’s parliament facing gridlock. The yield, or return sought by investors, on benchmark 10-year bonds rose by a fraction of a percentage point to 3.22% by 8.09 a.m. But the premium traders demand to hold French bonds instead of the ultra-safe German equivalents was lower on the day. However, it was still a lot higher than before French President Emmanuel Macron called the snap elections on June 9. The value of the currency, which is shared by 19 other countries in the EU, has swung wildly since June 9.

LONDON — Goldman Sachs on Friday upgraded its growth forecast for the U.K. after the Labour Party's thumping victory in the country's general election. The investment bank said in a note released early Friday morning that it expected Labour's fiscal policy agenda to provide a "modest boost to demand growth in the near-term" and raised its gross domestic product (GDP) forecasts for the U.K. by 0.1 percentage points in 2025 and 2026 to 1.6% and 1.5% respectively. "Reforms to the planning system could boost housebuilding and productivity; higher public sector investment could lift potential output; and closer trade ties with the EU could mitigate some of the costs of Brexit," Goldman Sachs economists said in the note.

AdvertisementAlthough payments have declined, electricity prices — the chief component driving utility costs — have been rising quickly, BofA noted. The upswing is on account of increased power demand, fueled by a range of diverse sources. But AI is the front-and-center factor that will drive utility costs up over a potentially multi-decade horizon, BofA noted. Meanwhile, Trump's policy proposals are headwinds for small caps and low-quality stocks. Instead, a Trump victory in November would best serve high-quality stocks — not the small caps or low-quality cyclicals that outperformed eight years ago. That day, energy, financials, industrials, materials and small caps all beat the broader market, Morgan Stanley said. Friday's small-cap outperformance following the debate was driven by expectations that this would repeat under Trump, Morgan Stanley said. Unlike 2016, investors today are focused on whether inflation and fiscal spending is going down.
