Wildfires that have burned dozens of mountain homes near Los Angeles slowed on Thursday with cooler temperatures but authorities warned the blazes still threatened suburbs. Driven by triple-digit heat, gusting winds and tinder-dry vegetation, the three fires burned at speeds firefighters have never witnessed, scorching over 110,000 acres — an area twice the size of Seattle. The Bridge Fire, California’s largest current wildfire, swept through communities in the San Gabriel Mountains less than 40 miles (65 km) northeast of central Los Angeles, where people priced out of the city have built homes. The 51,000-acre blaze destroyed over 40 houses and cabins in Mount Baldy and Wrightwood as well as damaging lifts at the Mountain High ski area, authorities said. Fire growth eased as the high for Los Angeles fell to 81F, a cooling trend expected to last through the weekend.

CNN —Right-wing media outlets are ignoring Donald Trump’s embrace of far-right conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, shielding their audience from the uproar amid condemnation from top Republicans. In recent days, Donald Trump has mingled with Loomer, the radical conspiracy theorist who has a well-documented history of pushing racist, sexist, Islamophobic and homophobic hate. But right-wing media outlets have largely ignored her close proximity to Trump and the ensuing controversy. That was also the case in other right-wing outlets, including the websites of Breitbart, The Daily Wire, One America News, and The Gateway Pundit. CNN —American Lael Wilcox has broken the world record for the fastest woman to cycle around the world, traversing 21 countries and 18,125 miles in three and a half months. “I had so much fun — felt like I could’ve just kept riding forever,” said Wilcox on Instagram following the conclusion of her journey. The 38-year-old Alaskan is an experienced ultra-endurance cyclist, having become the first woman and first American to win the TransAm, a 4,200-mile race across the US, in 2016. For her around-the-world record attempt, Wilcox began in Chicago before cycling to New York. From hometown Anchorage, Wilcox cycled south to Los Angeles, before finishing along Route 66 to Chicago.

HANOI, Vietnam — A flash flood swept away an entire hamlet in northern Vietnam, killing 22 people and leaving dozens missing as deaths from a typhoon and its aftermath climbed to 141 on Wednesday. Vietnamese state broadcaster VTV said the torrent of water gushing down from a mountain in Lao Cai province Tuesday buried Lang Nu hamlet with 35 families in mud and debris. Floods and landslides have caused most of the deaths, many of which have come in the northwestern province of Lao Cai, bordering China, where Lang Nu is located. Lao Cai province is also home to the popular trekking destination of Sapa. Many roads in the province were blocked by landslides and unrelenting rainfall, said Sapa tour guide Van A Po.

CNN —Police in Nashville are crediting rock legend Jon Bon Jovi with coming to a woman’s aid on the Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge on Tuesday night. Bon Jovi, accompanied by an unidentified person, appears to speak with the woman in distress and eventually helps lift her back over the ledge to safety. CNN reached out to a representative for Bon Jovi for comment. A source close to the situation told CNN on Wednesday that Bon Jovi was filming a music video on the public bridge when the incident occurred. Bon Jovi has experience and training in helping individuals in times of crisis thanks to his JBJ Soul Foundation, which he started in 2006.
