The Denver Basic Income Project just got an extension and more funding. The Denver Basic Income Project, which now provides monthly payments to 800 of the city's lowest-income households, announced it is extending its runtime for another six months. Many cities around the United States are experimenting with basic income projects to alleviate homelessness and support their most vulnerable residents. Gaza endgame: Inching toward a deal to end the war

On Monday Axios reported Israel had proposed a two-month truce in exchange for the release of all the 100-plus hostages still held in Gaza. The sticking point there appears to be that Hamas wants a “package deal” which would include a second-phase agreement to end the war. For now, though, such talk remains moot, with an Israeli official telling CNN there’s no concrete deal on the table. “But at the same time we can’t gamble on the future of Israel [by leaving Hamas in control of Gaza]. Any deal Israel is looking to seal, says Ziv, would be more likely to come into effect once the Khan Younis operation is complete.

The pansies of the past self-fertilized less and attracted far more pollinators than those of the present, according to the study. The changes could constrain the plants’ ability to adapt to future environmental changes and have implications for “all of floral biodiversity” — potentially diminishing flowering plants’ genetic, species and ecosystem variation. “This may increase the pollinator decline and cause a vicious feedback cycle,” study coauthor Pierre-Olivier Cheptou told CNN. Meanwhile, the “resurrected” flowers’ surfaces were 10% bigger, produced 20% more nectar and were frequented by more bumblebees than their modern counterparts. “(The study) is a really important demonstration of the tight linkages between plant and pollinator communities,” LeBuhn said.

The United States has provided Israel with military and economic aid since its founding 75 years ago. But it seems even the United States might have a breaking point. An amendment from Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, meanwhile, would prevent Biden from transferring weapons to Israel without congressional support. AdvertisementNet favorability for Israel only dropped 2.2 percentage points in the United States, but US support for Israel is taking a toll on global perceptions of the United States. Read previewJust 11 senators on Tuesday evening supported advancing a resolution from Sen. Bernie Sanders that would have significantly escalated congressional oversight of US military aid to Israel. AdvertisementUnder a relatively obscure provision within US law, the resolution would have forced the State Department to provide Congress with a report on human rights violations by Israel. "We will be voting on a very simple question: do you support asking the State Department whether human rights violations may have occurred using US equipment or assistance in this war?" However, it would be highly unusual for the State Department to fail to respond to an oversight request from Congress. "This should be the beginning of a broader human rights oversight process," said Chappell.

CNN —Uber is shutting down its alcohol delivery app, Drizly, just three years after acquiring it for $1.1 billion. The alcohol delivery service operated as a standalone app, and its marketplace was to be integrated into Uber’s delivery app, Uber Eats. In an effort to ramp up its competitive edge in the delivery business, Uber also purchased another delivery company, Postmates, for $2.65 billion a few months before it acquired Drizly. Uber’s ridesharing business has bounced back in recent quarters, though. In November, Uber reported gross bookings for the third quarter that beat the company’s own expectations.

WASHINGTON (AP) — John Kerry, the U.S. special envoy on climate, is stepping down from the Biden administration in the coming weeks, according to two people familiar with his plans. Kerry, a longtime senator and secretary of state, was tapped shortly after Joe Biden's November 2020 election to take on the new role created specifically to fight climate change on behalf of the administration on the global stage. "John Kerry's tireless work to deliver global progress on the climate crisis has been heroic," former Vice President Al Gore, who has focused primarily on climate in his post-public office life, said in a statement Saturday. While his gravitas has made him a central climate figure around the world, Kerry also has strong critics who argue America's climate policies don't amount to leadership in fighting global warming. The Inflation Reduction Act, the largest climate law in U.S. history, is pumping billions of dollars into renewable energies.

Many large public companies successfully navigated the pandemic and ended up larger and wealthier. Marblegate Asset Management then compared these findings to public companies in the Russell 3000 index — the broadest measure of American public companies. The firm's analysis found that EBITDA fell over 24% for middle-market companies between 2019 and 2022, whereas EBITDA grew 18% at large public companies. EBITDA margins fell 25% during the time period for middle-market companies, while it only declined 2% for public companies. Whereas large public companies can charge more for increases in raw material and labor costs, middle-market companies on the whole struggled to pass on these costs to customers.

Fidelity fund again trims Elon Musk’s X valuation

The latest disclosure by a Fidelity mutual fund reflects a long-running trend that has steadily reduced X’s estimated value over the past year amid successive crises at the company, many of which have been driven by owner Elon Musk. The filing said its shares in X represent less than .01% of the total value of the fund, which it said is more than $49 billion. Fidelity did slightly increase its estimated value of X multiple times last summer, around when Linda Yaccarino became X’s CEO. Since then, however, Fidelity has continued to cut the estimated value of its X shares. With X being privately held, Fidelity’s estimates have emerged as a closely watched indicator of X’s health and a reflection of the attitudes of Musk’s own investors.
