Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chair Charlie Munger arrives to begin the company's annual meeting in Omaha May 4, 2013. EXPANDING BUFFETT'S HORIZONSMunger and Buffett did differ politically, with Munger being a Republican and Buffett a Democrat. Like Buffett, Munger was a fan of the famed economist Benjamin Graham. ORACLE OF PASADENAFans dubbed Buffett the "Oracle of Omaha," but Munger was held in equal esteem by his own followers, who branded him the "Oracle of Pasadena" after his adopted hometown in California. "I was raised by people who thought it was a moral duty to be as rational as you could possibly make yourself," Munger told Daily Journal shareholders in 2020.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland considered a resolution to call for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war on Monday, potentially joining nearly a dozen other U.S. cities from Michigan to Georgia that have supported the same. The resolution before the Oakland City Council also calls for the unrestricted entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza and a restoration of basic services, as well as “respect for international law” and the release of all hostages. A temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, which Qatar helped broker, is currently in place. “It raises an interesting question on where they are getting this mandate to speak for the people in their city when nobody elected a city council person because of their stance on Middle East peace,” he said. Now, city councils are just the latest arena where intense debates over the war and the United States' support for Israel are playing out.

Military agreement fractures as tensions rise with North Korea

A rocket carrying a spy satellite Malligyong-1 is launched, as North Korean government claims, in a location given as North Gyeongsang Province, North Korea in this handout picture obtained by Reuters on November 21, 2023. South Korea had accused Pyongyang of violating the agreement after North Korean artillery shells fell into a maritime buffer zone that was supposed to be free of live-fire drills under the agreement. The North then said South Korea had resumed the use of propaganda loudspeakers at the border in violation of the agreement. South Korea's military will restart aerial surveillance in border areas, which had been conducted before the agreement was signed, the defence ministry said. South Korea said, however, its decisions on whether to take further actions to pull out of the military agreement would depend on the North's follow-up moves.

PARIS, Nov 19 (Reuters) - A bicorne hat believed to have belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte sold for a record 1,932,000 euros ($2.11 million) at the Drouot auction house in Paris on Sunday. The price beat the 1,884,000 euros paid for another Napoleon hat at Drouot in 2014, a official at the auction house said. "One million four hundred fifty thousand (euros) to my left, 1.5 million, we have 1.5 million in the room, 1.5 million for Napoleon's hat. We're leaving it at 1.5 million for this major Napoleon symbol, I'm selling for 1.5 million (before fees), no regrets, sold," auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osenat said as he brought down the hammer to applause. Ahead of the auction, Osenat told Reuters the black beaver felt hat in the traditional bicorne shape was a trademark for Napoleon, who had owned about 120 such hats throughout his life.

Yet there they were Wednesday evening, kowtowing to Mr. Xi at a dinner that delivered China a propaganda coup and the CEOs an embarrassment. The dinner, for which ticket prices ranged up to $40,000, sounds like some affair. Mr. Xi received a standing ovation for taking the stage before he said a word.

"We will continue working to better facilitate high-standard trade that advances workers' rights through strong enforcement of labor standards." Biden was also to take part on Thursday in an event for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), a 14-nation group his administration established. Hopes for an IPEF trade deal were dashed this week. Asked how long an IPEF trade agreement could take to conclude, an administration official said most negotiations take years but the White House intended to work on an "accelerated timeline." "A stable relationship between the world's two largest economies is not merely good for those two economies but for the world," Biden said to applause.

President Biden said Thursday that the United States has “real differences with Beijing,” one day after he held an hourslong meeting with President Xi Jinping of China at a moment of deep tension between the two countries. Speaking to executives at the APEC summit in San Francisco, Mr. Biden noted that he and Mr. Xi had agreed to resume military-to-military communication to “reduce the risk of miscalculation” — a line that got a round of applause from the room. “We have real differences with Beijing,” Mr. Biden said. “We are going to continue to address them with smart policies and strong diplomacy.”Mr. Biden also stressed that a strong U.S. economy was helping the Indo-Pacific region. The president has been frustrated that positive news about the U.S. economy has not seemed to resonate with the public, so on Thursday he took the opportunity to tick through the numbers.

CNN —Fans gathered at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, England on Saturday to pay tribute to Adam Johnson, the American ice hockey player who died last week while playing for the Nottingham Panthers. Outside the stadium, fans laid a colorful sea of flowers and, inside, were invited to sign books of condolence on the carpeted ice, the club said in a statement. A jersey created in memory of Johnson has “surpassed the highest level of demand ever seen for a hockey jersey in the UK,” the club said, adding that the profits will be donated to the fundraiser. The Panthers play in England’s top league, the Elite Ice Hockey League, which announced that at all games this weekend there will be a minute’s silence followed by a minute’s applause in memory of Johnson.
