CNN —Hurricane Hilary is expected to slam into Southern California on Sunday as a rare tropical storm, unleashing floods, fierce winds and heavy downpours as residents evacuate, parks and beaches close and first responders brace for water rescues. Although Hilary is forecast to move north from Baja California into Southern California Sunday afternoon, its impacts will be felt earlier. First responders have also pre-positioned to respond quickly and perform water rescues from flooded areas, state officials said. There are “more than 7,500 boots on the ground” already deployed to help protect from the impact of Hurricane Hilary, according to the release from Newsom’s office. “There will be power outages across Southern California,” Ward said.

As Tropical Storm Hilary nears the United States, here are six things you should know. Hilary has made landfall in Mexico, but the expected impact in the United States is the same, with damaging winds, strong waves and, in some areas, major flooding. As Hilary approaches the United States this afternoon, winds and rain are increasing across the Southwest. Forecasters said they were already experiencing hourly rain rates of a quarter to half an inch in Los Angeles and issued a flood advisory for Los Angeles County. In the coastal mountains, winds could still gust to hurricane force (74 miles per hour or greater).

CNN —Residents in the Southwest are bracing for heavy rains and potentially catastrophic flooding as Hurricane Hilary is expected to pummel the region as a rare tropical storm beginning Sunday and lasting into next week. Its core is expected to pass close to the peninsula Saturday night and then weaken into a tropical storm as it crosses into the US and Southern California. The threat has triggered California’s first ever tropical storm warning extending from the state’s southern border to just north of Los Angeles. “Preparations for the impacts of flooding from rainfall should be completed as soon as possible, as heavy rain will increase ahead of the center on Saturday,” the hurricane center said. The National Hurricane Center issued its first-ever tropical-storm watch for Southern California today as Hurricane Hilary, a large and powerful Category 4 storm, barreled toward the region. The watch, which stretches from the U.S.-Mexico border up to Los Angeles County, means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the area over the next 48 hours. However, it will remain a hurricane as it approaches the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula tomorrow. The storm is predicted to make landfall sometime between tomorrow night and Sunday evening, when the most torrential rain and possible tropical storm-force winds are expected to arrive in Southern California. Weather experts forecast that it will become a tropical storm before reaching Southern California on Sunday.

California may have found an effective model to build affordable housing more quickly. The law applies to all regions of California that haven't met their housing construction targets, which is almost everywhere in the housing-scarce state. Between 2018 and 2021, 156 projects with more than 18,000 units have been approved or are under review under SB 35. SB 35 projects are also exempt from review under the California Environmental Quality Act, further speeding up the approval process. "It'll be catastrophic if it's not extended," Ramie Dare, director of real estate at the non-profit affordable housing developer Mercy Housing California, told the researchers.

CNN —The actress Leah Remini has filed a lawsuit against the Church of Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige, claiming she has suffered years of harassment, intimidation and defamation as part of an organized campaign of retaliation for her criticism of the church since leaving it a decade ago. After leaving the church in 2013, though, the actress became a fierce and high-profile critic: She published a memoir in 2015, “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology,” and went on to host three seasons of the docuseries, “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” on A&E. “Leah Remini has become what she once vowed she would never be: ‘This bitter ex-Scientologist,’” the church said in a 2016 statement in response to the series. The lawsuit also claims that Davis was pressured to participate in a nude photo shoot to stay in a dance competition despite her discomfort. The lawsuit also alleges that Quigley harassed the dancers by subjecting them to her religious beliefs against their will. The plaintiffs also claimed that Quigley forced the topic of Davis' virginity into conversations and interviews. Davis and Williams were eventually dismissed while Rodriguez resigned over the behavior, the lawsuit said.

The Promise of Prison Music - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2023-08-03 | by ( Maurice Chammah | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
For wardens running bigger and fuller prisons, letting in people and technology was one more avoidable security risk. The racial prejudice that underpinned the War on Drugs infected how a lot of prison music was perceived. Throughout the 1990s, a rising victims’ rights movement framed any creativity behind bars as a moral affront to crime survivors. Much of society lost interest in hearing the voices of people inside prisons, but they didn’t stop creating and often they used music as a form of resistance. There are hopeful signs that our prison system could return to seeing music as a way to maintain hope inside — and prepare society to accept the people they’re going to release.

CNN —A 79-square-mile area of Los Angeles County is under quarantine after an invasive fruit fly was found there – the first such quarantine for the pest in the Western Hemisphere, according to California officials. The Tau fruit fly, originating in Asia, is a “serious pest for agriculture and natural resources,” according to the release. It isn’t the first time the Tau fruit fly was found in California. The state agency plans to work with the US Department of Agriculture and local authorities to eliminate the Tau fruit fly and prevent its spread. A fruit fly invasion has led to the quarantine of a 79-square-mile region of Los Angeles County. Residents are free to come and go under the quarantine, but their produce is not. But this isn't a quarantine for people, like the COVID restrictions we're all used to — it's a quarantine of fruits and vegetables only. To prevent the flies from spreading, people living in the quarantined area cannot take any fruits or vegetables off their property, the agency advised. People are advised not to remove any produce from their property to avoid spreading the invasive Tau fruit fly.

CNN —A Los Angeles County Superior judge ordered actor Pete Davidson to complete an 18-month diversion program after the actor was charged with reckless driving in connection with a car crash in Beverly Hills earlier this year, CNN has confirmed. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney (LACDA) said on Monday that as part of the program, Davidson is required to complete 50 hours of community service, which can be completed in New York, LACDA said. In June, a spokesperson for the LACDA confirmed to CNN in a statement that Davidson was charged with one misdemeanor count of reckless driving. “We believe that Mr. Davidson engaged in reckless driving, which ultimately resulted in his involvement in a serious collision into a home,” the statement read. We know that reckless driving can have devastating consequences.”The March 4 incident happened around 11 pm PT, when a vehicle Davidson was driving on a residential street crashed into a fire hydrant and a home.

Corporate America’s treatment of Latinx people as a homogeneous monolithic group, instead of the diverse demographic it is, has for decades perpetuated stereotypes of Latino authenticity. These stereotypes have disproportionately depicted Latinos on TV and in movies as Spanish speakers that hailed from Latin America and shared a particular Latin “look.”In Hollywood, this narrative has reinforced the notion that we are a niche market that is separate from the mainstream, which could be served through the importation of programming that is cheaper to produce in Latin America over programing that is produced in the United States. That’s why it was exciting to see Jenna Ortega and Pedro Pascal make Emmy history last week, as only the third Latina actress and first Latino actor nominated in the lead acting categories for the hit shows “Wednesday” and “The Last of Us.”Though Latinx people make up 19 percent of the U.S. population, they account for less than 5 percent of actors cast in speaking roles in the nation’s top-grossing films. Additionally, representation in the media industry as a whole stands at a mere 12 percent, with the majority of positions being service oriented, like cleaning services and security. These numbers have remained stagnant for decades, which is outrageous when you consider that they make up nearly half the population in Los Angeles County.
